Ballroom Dancing for People With Multiple Sclerosis: Perceptions of the Experience.

BACKGROUND: Multiple sclerosis (MS) encompasses various symptoms, including fatigue, pain, spasticity, motor dysfunction, postural instability, sexual and bladder dysfunction, and cognitive impairment. Despite the documented benefits of exercise for alleviating MS symptoms, adherence to physical activity guidelines often is low, resulting in sedentary lifestyles among people with MS. This qualitative study explores the experiences of individuals with MS who participated in a ballroom dance intervention. METHODS: Thirteen community-dwelling individuals with MS participated in five 1-hour focus

Efficacy of ferric carboxymaltose in heart failure with iron deficiency: an individual patient data meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Whereas a beneficial effect of intravenous ferric carboxymaltose (FCM) on symptoms and exercise capacity among patients with iron deficiency and heart failure (HF) has been consistently demonstrated, the effects of treatment on clinical events remain the subject of research. This meta-analysis aimed to characterize the effects of FCM therapy on hospitalizations and mortality. METHODS: Patient-level data from randomized, placebo-controlled FCM trials including adults with HF and iron deficiency with ≥52 weeks follow-up were analysed. The co-primary efficacy endpoints were

A Case of Pulmonary Embolism with Sarcomatoid Malignant Pleural Mesothelioma with Long-Term Pleural Effusion.

BACKGROUND: Malignant pleural mesothelioma (MPM) is a highly aggressive tumor that originates from pleural mesothelial cells. In recent years, with the development of asbestos-related industries and the increase in air pollution, its incidence has been increased. The incidence of pulmonary embolism combined with sarcomatoid MPM is very low and the prognosis is extremely poor. We here report a case of a patient with long term of pleural effusion and finally diagnosed as pulmonary embolism with sarcomatoid MPM. CASE: A 75-year-old male with a 30-year history of asbestos exposure was admitted to

A preventive intervention to modify depression risk targets after breast cancer diagnosis: Design and single-arm pilot study.

OBJECTIVE: Apply the National Institutes of Health (NIH) Stage Model to design and test an intervention to prevent depression in breast cancer patients at risk for depression. METHODS: We identified mindful emotion awareness, along with approach and avoidance strategies for cancer-related coping and emotion regulation, as targets for a preventive intervention adapted from the Unified Protocol for Transdiagnostic Treatment of Emotional Disorders. Patients' preferences for individual, in-person, and time-efficient sessions informed the design. Patients at risk for depression received a 6-week,

The Effect of Additives for Reflux or Dysphagia Management on Osmolality in Ready-to-Feed Preterm Formula: Practice Implications.

BACKGROUND: A common osmolality threshold for feedings is to stay <450 mOsm/kg for normal infants. Preterm formulas are frequently modified to improve growth, modify nutrition, and manage gastroesophageal reflux (GER) or dysphagia. Relationships between osmolality and additives to ready-to-feed preterm formulas are unclear. Our aims were to evaluate and compare the effects of caloric density, thickening agent recipes, and supplements to ready-to-feed preterm formula on osmolality. METHODS: A freezing point osmometer was used to measure the osmolality of 47 preterm infant formula combinations

Systematic review of the efficacy of non-pharmacological interventions in people with Lewy body dementia.

UNLABELLED: ABSTRACTBackground:Pharmacological interventions for Lewy body dementia (LBD), especially for its non-cognitive symptoms, are limited in their efficacy and tolerability. Clinicians are often uncertain about non-pharmacological interventions and their efficacy in managing cognitive and non-cognitive symptoms of LBD. Therefore, we aimed to systematically review the existing literature on non-pharmacological interventions for people with LBD. METHODS: We carried out a systematic search using six databases. All human studies examining impact of any non-pharmacological intervention on

Hemodialysis patients' preferences for the management of secondary hyperparathyroidism.

BACKGROUND: Patient engagement and patient-centered care are critical in optimally managing patients with end-stage renal disease (ESRD). Understanding patient preferences is a key element of patient-centered care and shared decision making. The objective of this study was to elicit patients' preferences for the treatment of secondary hyperparathyroidism (SHPT) associated with ESRD using a discrete-choice experiment survey. METHODS: Clinical literature, nephrologist input, patient-education resources, and a patient focus group informed development of the survey instrument, which was qualitati

Diagnosis and Treatment of Childhood Migraine.

While the diagnosis of migraine in children is generally straightforward, treatment can seem complex with a number of medication choices, many of which are used "off label." Patients with intermittent migraines can often be managed with ibuprofen or naproxen taken as needed. Unfortunately, by the time that children present to our practice, they have often tried these medications without improvement. Triptans are frequently prescribed to these patients with good success. It is important to make the patient aware of the possible associated serotonergic reactions. If the patient is having more th

Single-dose pharmacokinetics of different oral sodium nitrite formulations in diabetes patients.

BACKGROUND: Diabetic foot ulcers, although associated with macrovascular disease and neuropathy, have a microvascular disease causing ischemia not amenable to surgical intervention. Nitrite selectively releases nitric oxide in ischemic tissues, and diabetes subjects have low nitrite levels that do not increase with exercise. This study explores the safety and pharmacokinetics of a single dose of sodium nitrite in subjects with diabetic foot ulcers. SUBJECTS AND METHODS: Using a blinded, randomized crossover study design, 12 subjects with diabetes mellitus and active or healed foot ulcers rece

Evaluation of trans sodium crocetinate on safety and exercise performance in patients with peripheral artery disease and intermittent claudication.

Trans sodium crocetinate (TSC) is a synthetic carotenoid that improves the diffusion of oxygen in animal models of ischemia/hypoxia. This study evaluated multiple doses of TSC in patients with peripheral artery disease (PAD) and hypothesized that a preliminary dose-response relationship could be identified on peak walking time (PWT). Forty-eight patients with symptomatic PAD and an ankle-brachial index < 0.90 were included, while critical limb ischemia, recent revascularization, and exercise limited by symptoms other than claudication were exclusionary. Patients were randomized to placebo or e

[Psychophysical and physical methods in treatment of dermatoses, accompanied by skin dryness and itching].

Traditionally, the exacerbation of skin diseases accompanied by itching and dryness is cutting off by using of antihistamines, indifferent ointment (sometimes together with topical corticosteroids) and antipruritic local means. For the continuous application in inter-relapsing period, patients, as a rule, are offered variety of lipid-recovery beauty creams, ointments and emulsions. At the same time, such measures do not have a significant impact on the severity of itching and the cost of these drugs is quite high. Based on the above, we propose an alternative method of treatment, including use

Treatment of pulmonary hypertension in patients with connective tissue disease and interstitial lung disease.

BACKGROUND: Pulmonary hypertension (PH) in patients with connective tissue disease (CTD) can occur in isolation or concomitantly with interstitial lung disease (ILD). Targeted therapies for PH can mitigate clinical deterioration in CTD patients with isolated PH; however, the effect of these therapies in CTD patients with PH and ILD (CTD-PH-ILD) are poorly characterized. OBJECTIVE: To investigate outcomes following long-term treatment of PH in patients with CTD-PH-ILD. METHODS: A retrospective evaluation of 13 CTD-PH-ILD patients who were treated with bosentan, sildenafil or

Adenosine injection into the brachial artery produces ischaemia like pain or discomfort in the forearm.

To determine whether pain or discomfort could be provoked by adenosine in skeletal muscle and, if so, whether it was dependent on the vasodilatation produced by adenosine, eight male volunteers were given intra-arterial bolus injections of adenosine and glyceryl trinitrate into the forearm. Local pain was assessed on a scale rate, forearm blood flow was measured by venous occlusion plethysmography, and blood was sampled simultaneously from the deep vein of the same arm. Five different doses of adenosine, ranging between the maximum tolerable and the lowest producing pain or discomfort, were gi
