Capacitively coupled electrical stimulation of bone healing in the horse: in vivo study with a Salter type IV osteotomy model with stainless steel surface electrodes.

The use of capacitively coupled low-voltage signals for stimulation of osteogenesis has been reported in a variety of animal models. Electrically induced osteogenesis was investigated with a capacitively coupled electric field on a radius (distal-lateral orientation) osteotomy model, in conjunction with internal fixation and postoperative loading. Twelve adult horses of either sex were allotted to 2 groups of 6; 1 group was given electrical stimulation and the other served as controls. A low-voltage high-frequency capacitively coupled electrical signal was locally and continuously applied to t

Continuous mechanical compression-induced intervertebral disc degeneration and pain in the caudal spine in rats.

BACKGROUND: Chronic low back pain imposes substantial social and economic burdens due to its rising prevalence and associated disability. Intervertebral disc degeneration is the primary driver of discogenic back pain, though the mechanistic links between degenerative changes and persistent pain remain incompletely defined. Aberrant mechanical loading is recognised as a key trigger of disc degeneration. This work built a caudal spine compression rat model to explore how the P2Y2 receptor mediates load-induced disc degeneration and associated pain. METHODS: Fifty-six eight-week-old male laborat

Clinical and Functional Outcomes of Closed Intramedullary Interlocking Nailing in Extra-articular Distal Tibial Fractures: A Prospective Observational Study.

INTRODUCTION: Extra-articular distal tibial fractures are difficult to manage because of poor soft-tissue coverage, limited vascularity, and the tendency for malalignment and delayed union. Closed intramedullary interlocking nailing has become an increasingly preferred treatment option because it preserves fracture hematoma and periosteal blood supply. AIMS: The aim of the study was to evaluate the clinical and functional outcomes of closed intramedullary interlocking nailing in extra-articular distal tibial fractures. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This prospective observational, single-center stud

Comparative Analysis of Extraction Complications in Transvenous Versus Leadless Pacemakers.

Pacemakers are cardiac implantable electronic devices (CIEDs) that deliver electrical impulses to regulate heart rhythm and manage conditions such as cardiac arrhythmias. While transvenous pacemakers (TP) have a generator with pacing leads, leadless pacemakers (LPs) are anchored within the right ventricular endocardium via tined or helical fixation. Device extractions may occur due to infection, dysfunction, or device upgrade. This study aims to analyze the incidence and severity of extraction complications between TPs and LPs.    A comprehensive narrative review was performed through the PubM

Ulnar lengthening for forearm deformities in hereditary multiple exostoses: a systematic review and meta-analysis (2015-2025).

BACKGROUND: Hereditary multiple exostoses (HME) is an autosomal dominant skeletal disorder frequently associated with progressive forearm deformities, including ulnar shortening, radial bowing, and radial head dislocation. Ulnar lengthening using distraction osteogenesis has become the principal surgical strategy; however, outcomes, techniques, and complication profiles vary across studies. This systematic review and meta-analysis synthesize contemporary evidence on radiographic correction, functional outcomes, and complications following ulnar lengthening for HME-related forearm deformities.

Prevalence and management of lower limb segmental overgrowth in patients with NF1: an observational study.

BACKGROUND: Neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1) is a neurocutaneous disorder characterized by a potential multisystemic involvement. The musculoskeletal system is frequently affected (i.e.: scoliosis, thorax anomalies, tibial dysplasia). The segmental overgrowth of lower limb (SOLL) is rarely reported, albeit it severely affects patients’ wellbeing. The resulting leg length discrepancy (LLD) negatively impacts the development of the musculoskeletal system and may require appropriate correction, which could include surgery. Our objective was to evaluate the prevalence, the management, and the outcom

Age-related differences in liver damage and inflammation after femoral osteotomy.

Fractures of long bones such as the femur are a common and serious health concern in the elderly, triggering immune responses essential for healing but also affecting remote organs like the liver. With age, the risk of fractures and immune imbalance increases, raising the likelihood of organ damage, infections, and mortality. To better understand age-dependent hepatic responses to bone injury, this study investigates early immune responses in the liver following femoral osteotomy, used here as a reproducible model of fracture. In a mouse model, young (17-26 weeks old) and aged (64-72 weeks old

Corrective Osteotomy after Gradual Lengthening of the Forearm in Children/Adolescents.

PURPOSE: We experienced a few unpredictable or unintentional outcomes after gradual lengthening (GL) through distractive osteogenesis (DO) in several etiologies. For deformed forearm bones, we performed an additional delayed corrective osteotomy (DCO). Here, we report the outcomes of two groups according to whether DCO was performed or not, due to unexpected outcomes. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Among children/adolescents treated with GL between 2000 and 2015, we further inspected patients who had unpredictable or unintentional outcomes after GL (Group 1). The patients with satisfactory outcomes w

Optimizing bone transport strategies: a pixel value ratio-based evaluation of regeneration rates in bifocal and trifocal techniques.

BACKGROUND: Bone transport techniques are crucial for managing large bone defects, but the optimal approach for different defect lengths remains unclear. This study aimed to compare bone regeneration rates between short bifocal bone transport (SBBT), long bifocal bone transport (LBBT), and trifocal bone transport (TBT) using pixel value ratio (PVR) as an objective quantitative measure. METHODS: This retrospective study included 60 patients undergoing lower limb bone transport, divided into SBBT (n = 22, defects <6 cm), LBBT (n = 20, defects ≥6 cm), and TBT (n = 18, defects ≥6 cm) groups. Clinical application of instant 3D printed cast versus polymer orthosis in the treatment of colles fracture: a randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: The shortcomings of plaster in water resistance, air permeability, skin comfort, fixed stability and weight of wearing are still to be solved. 3D printed cast can overcome the above shortcomings. At present, there is a relative lack of data on the clinical application of 3D printed cast, probably due to its complexity, relatively long operating time, and high price. We aimed to compare and evaluate the short-term effectiveness, safety and advantages of 3D printed wrist cast versus polymer orthosis in the treatment of Colles fracture. METHODS: Forty patients with Colles fracture in

Minimally Invasive Direct Internal Cyclopexy in the Management of Goniotomy-Related Cyclodialysis Cleft with Hypotony Maculopathy.

INTRODUCTION: Although ab-interno trabeculotomy-related (goniotomy-related) surgeries has a favorable safety profile, cyclodialysis cleft refractory to conservative management could occur, thereby requiring additional surgical treatment. External and, more recently, internal cycloplexy have been attempted to treat cyclodialysis clefts with hypotony maculopathy, however the traditional methods require conjunctival or scleral incisions and have been inappropriate for glaucoma patients who need to undergo future trabeculectomy. Therefore, we report two cases who underwent a novel reliable techniq

Helical Plating Compared with Straight Plating and Nailing for Treatment of Proximal Third Humeral Shaft Fractures-A Biomechanical Study.

Background and Objectives: The surgical treatment of proximal humeral shaft fractures usually considers application of either long straight plates or intramedullary nails. By being able to spare the rotator cuff and avoid the radial nerve distally, the implementation of helical plates might overcome the downsides of common fixation methods. The aims of the current study were (1) to explore the biomechanical competence of different plate designs and (2) to compare their performance versus the alternative treatment option of using intramedullary nails. Materials and Methods: Twenty-four artifici

Laterally applied single bone plate option for fixation of complete diaphyseal fracture of a third metatarsal bone in a circus work pony.

BACKGROUND: Complete fractures of the third metacarpal/metatarsal bones (Mc/t3) are not common, but can occur in various situations and all types of horses, contributing for approximately one third of all long bone fractures in the horse, mostly related to external trauma or to high energy injuries. To stabilize Mc/t3 fractures in the horse, conservative management with walking casts and/or open reduction and internal fixation techniques are referred in the scientific literature, these last one generally by double platting application to bone surface in 90 degrees. In the present case will be

Reverse shoulder arthroplasty for treatment of proximal humerus complex fractures in elderly: A single institution experience.

INTRODUCTION: Treatment of complex proximal humerus fractures (PHFs) in the elderly should provide early mobilization to maintain autonomy and self-care possibility, avoiding further surgery for complications. Nowadays, there is not a gold standard for treatment. Aim of our study was to review our experience with the use of Reverse Total Shoulder Arthroplasty (RTSA) for the treatment of these fractures in the elderly, evaluating complications and functional results. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Ninety-one patients older than 65 were treated with RTSA at our Institute between June 2005 and December
