Health-related quality of life assessed before and during chemotherapy predicts for survival in multiple myeloma. Nordic Myeloma Study Group.

Measurement of health-related quality of life was integrated into a randomized trial (NMSG 4/90) comparing melphalan/prednisone to melphalan/prednisone + interferon alpha-2b in newly diagnosed multiple myeloma. One of the aims of the study was to assess the prognostic significance of quality-of-life scores, using the EORTC QLQ-C30 questionnaire. Univariate analysis showed a highly significant association with survival from the start of therapy for physical functioning as well as role and cognitive functioning, global quality of life, fatigue and pain. In multivariate analysis, physical functio

Coupled and decoupled antimony-arsenic mobility along environmental gradients in a mining soil: Links to geochemical contexts and microbial functional potential.

Distinct redox behavior, surface-binding affinities, and microbial transformation pathways of antimony (Sb) and arsenic (As) complicate sustainable remediation of mining soils. Understanding how these differences shape field mobility is essential for nature-based remediation that avoids unnecessary inputs. Yet whether natural gradients produce generalizable Sb-As mobility patterns and mechanisms remains unclear. Here, we integrated physicochemical, metagenomic, and statistical analyses to determine how field gradients shaped microbial functional potential and Sb-As mobility at a single Sb smel

Pandanus tectorius Leaf Extract Protects Gnotobiotic Brine Shrimp Artemia franciscana Against Vibrio campbellii Through Immunomodulation and Virulence Suppression.

The bacterial disease vibriosis in farmed shrimps typically occurs when the host immunity is compromised, creating favourable conditions for pathogenic vibrios to proliferate and express virulence factors that contribute to disease development. Therefore, effective control of vibriosis requires interventions that not only enhance host immune competence but also attenuate pathogen virulence. This study evaluated whether Pandanus tectorius leaf extract (PLE) could protect farmed shrimp against vibriosis through a potentially dual mode of action: enhancing host immune responses and simultaneously

Genomic and epidemiological insights into a non-toxigenic Vibrio cholerae O1 Ogawa from an autochthonous case in Brazil.

UNLABELLED: Vibrio cholerae remains a global health threat, driven by epidemic strains and sporadic infections associated with non-toxigenic lineages. We report the genomic characterization of a V. cholerae O1 Ogawa isolate (V86/24) recovered from a human case in Brazil (2024) with no travel history. We performed antimicrobial susceptibility testing, whole-genome sequencing (WGS), and in silico analyses, including SNP-based phylogenetic and pangenome analyses (V86/24 + 62 public genomes; total N = 63), resistome, and virulome. The isolate showed intermediate susceptibility to imipenem but was

Are patient factors associated with adverse perioperative outcomes in GLP-1 receptor agonist users? A retrospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Use of Glucagon-Like Peptide-1 Receptor Agonists (GLP-1RA) is increasing. Perioperative GLP-1RA continuation has adverse and beneficial effects. This retrospective cohort study aimed to identify how patient factors are associated with perioperative outcomes in GLP-1RA users. METHODS: Adults undergoing general anesthesia, from 2015 to 2025, were selected from the TriNetX nationwide deidentified database. GLP-1RA users had three instances of GLP-1RA use within 1 month prior to surgery. GLP-1RA nonusers had no history of GLP-1RAs. Comorbidities were present within 1 year prior to sur

Therapeutic efficacy of Annona muricata in counteracting nephrolithiasis-induced electrolyte imbalance and antioxidant disruption in ethylene glycol-treated rats.

Nephrolithiasis (kidney stone) is a global health concern with multifactorial origins, including genetic, environmental, dietary, and metabolic factors. This study investigates the therapeutic potential of Annona muricata (AM) leaf extract in mitigating nephrolithiasis-induced electrolyte imbalance, antioxidant depletion, and histopathological alterations in an ethylene glycol (EG)-challenged rat model by modulating Na+/K+-ATPase and Ca2+/Mg2+-ATPase activities. Twenty-five male rats were randomly assigned to five experimental groups: 0.75% v/v ethylene glycol in drinking water for 28 days in

Correlation of Ultrasonographic Varicocele Grading with Seminal Fluid Analysis in Male Infertility at Ahmadu Bello University Teaching Hospital, Zaria, Nigeria.

BACKGROUND: Infertility is a global health issue with profound social and psychological consequences, particularly in sub-Saharan Africa, where male factors are often underdiagnosed. Varicocele, a dilatation of the pampiniform plexus veins, is a leading correctable cause of male infertility. Seminal fluid analysis (SFA) remains the cornerstone for evaluating male fertility. Establishing correlations between ultrasound grading of varicocele and semen parameters may provide clinicians with predictive, non-invasive tools for managing infertility. The objective of the study is to correlate the ult

An in vitro parametric study of maxillary sinus ventilation using transparent 3D-printed sinonasal models.

BACKGROUND: Impaired maxillary sinus ventilation promotes secretion stasis and infection risk. How anatomical parameters (ostial diameter (D), length (L), and sinus volume (V)) interact with breathing pattern to shape ventilation has not been systematically studied in anatomically realistic settings. METHODS: Fifteen transparent sinonasal casts were 3D printed spanning three levels of D, L, and V (D1-D3, L1-L3, V1-V3). E-vapor was used to visualize and quantity sinus ventilation under three conditions: breath-hold, quiet breathing, and panting. Two time metrics were quantified: (i) total vapo

Aerodynamic Demand Responses to the Fluid Interval Test for Voice: A Laryngeal Diadochokinetic Vocal Loading Task.

INTRODUCTION: Vocal loading tasks are useful for studying vocal demand responses-the unique sets of biomechanical, aerodynamic, and acoustic adaptations that speakers employ to meet the vocal demands of communication. We discuss aerodynamic demand responses to the Fluid Interval Test for Voice (FIT-V), a vocal loading task founded on resisted laryngeal diadochokinesis (LDDK), to determine how aerodynamic factors may influence LDDK performance. METHOD: Participants (N = 30) produced loud abductory LDDK (/hʌ hʌ hʌ/) for 30 min, alternating 30-s intervals of exercise and rest. Depending on the t

Health risk behaviours, obesity, and gambling severity: findings from a nationwide population study.

Prior research on the relationship between health risk behaviours (HRBs), obesity, and gambling has primarily focused on problem gambling, while studies focusing on lower severity levels are scarce. Moreover, this relationship has rarely been analysed separately for women and men. This study aimed to investigate the association between HRBs, obesity, and the full spectrum of gambling severity in women and men. Cross-sectional population-based data from Healthy Finland Survey 2022-23 was exploited, including adults aged 20+ years (n = 28 154, response rate 46%, mean age 52 years). The Problem G

FXR overexpression restores NLRP3-mediated mitophagy and improves mitochondrial dysfunction in alcoholic liver disease.

Alcoholic liver disease (ALD) is a common chronic liver disease worldwide, directly caused by excessive and prolonged alcohol consumption. To date, there are no acknowledged therapeutic approaches for treating ALD. The reason is that ALD pathogenesis is multifactorial and only partially understood. Mitochondrial dysfunction-related mitophagy and inflammation are essential factors that play critical roles in the pathogenesis and progression of ALD. The farnesoid X receptor (FXR), a member of the nuclear receptor superfamily, plays a well-established role in liver protection, but whether and how

Inhibition of pro-apoptotic UPR pathways PERK/CHOP and IRE1/JNK protects differentiated SH-SY5Y cells against rotenone-induced toxicity.

INTRODUCTION: Parkinson's disease (PD) is a chronic neurodegenerative disorder characterized by loss of dopaminergic neurons and α-synuclein aggregation in the midbrain. One proposed mechanism in PD pathogenesis is endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress followed by activation of the unfolded protein response (UPR). The UPR consists of three main branches, among which the protein kinase RNA-like ER kinase (PERK) and inositol-requiring enzyme 1 (IRE1) contribute to pro-apoptotic signaling by inducing C/EBP homologous protein (CHOP) and c-Jun N-terminal kinase (JNK), respectively. METHODS: This study

Exploring the Involvement of PINK1 in Parkinson's Disease: A Scanning Tunnelling Microscopy Study of Electron Transfer in Synthetic DNA Samples.

BACKGROUND: Parkinson's disease (PD) is a neurodegenerative disorder with a complex aetiology involving several genetic and environmental factors. Although no clear evidence of a direct link between the electronic features of DNA and PD has been found, elucidating the role of DNA in cellular function and dysfunction could provide valuable insights into the mechanisms of the disease (e.g. mutations occurring in the phosphatase and tensin homolog [PTEN]-induced kinase 1 [PINK1] DNA of PD). This study aimed to analyse topographic images and measure the electronic conductivity of synthetic normal

Synergistic comparison of ANN and ANFIS predictive modeling with experimental electrochemical performance data in CO₂ conversion.

This work systematically evaluated CO₂ conversion performance metrics across the recent high-impact literature by focusing on five key inputs; applied potential (AP), catalyst loading (CL), composition (CO), support (SU) and electrolyte (EL) and two outputs; Faradaic efficiency (FE) and current density (CD). Dataset Sixty-four series were evaluated to generate predictive models for FE and CD. Residual plots showed a good fit along the fitted axis with deviations from normality being quite small, confirming linear relationships between input and output. Histograms have shown most of the errors

Effect of Salivary Flow Rate, Particle Size, and Concentration on Sensations and Liking for Fiber-Fortified Beverages.

Xerostomia (perceived oral dryness) is a common problem in older adults, often due to hyposalivation, which can cause difficulty in eating and swallowing, resulting in insufficient dietary fiber intake. Recent work shows salivary flow rate, particle size, and concentration are major factors for particle perception in beverages. Given that disliking drives non-consumption, here we explore how particle size, concentration, and salivary flow rate may affect liking in a fiber-fortified model beverage. Beverages made with 2 particle sizes of wheat brans (D90 = 976 μm and 209 μm) in 3 concentrations
