BACKGROUND Myocarditis is a rare but potentially fatal complication of mumps virus infection. Left ventricular non-compaction (LVNC) is a rare congenital abnormality that can lead to development of low cardiac output, cardiac dysfunction, arrhythmias, or sudden cardiac death. Lassa fever is a rodent-borne disease caused by Lassa virus (LASV). It causes fever, dizziness, vertigo, fatigue, coughing, diarrhea, internal bleeding and facial edema. The disease has been known in Guinea since 1960 but only anectodical acute cases have been reported to date. In January 2019, a 35-year-old man, a wood merchant from Kissidougou, Forest Guinea, presented himself at several health centers with persistent fever, frequent vomiting and joint pain. Powassan virus (POWV) is a flavivirus of the tick-borne encephalitis serogroup that causes a rare and potentially life-threatening neuroinvasive disease. An adult female Cape porcupine (Hystrix africaeaustralis) was presented because of marked abdominal distension, acute dyspnea, and lethargy. Physical examination and standard radiographs revealed marked and diffuse gaseous dilation of the stomach and intestines of undetermined origin. The porcupine died despite medical therapy and surgical intervention. Postmortem examination revealed chronic fungal (Aspergillus flavus) rhinitis. Given that rodents are obligate nasal breathers, the rhinitis likely resulted in substantial upper airway obstruction leading to aerophagia.

BACKGROUND: Leptomeningeal metastasis (LM) is a predominantly late stage, devastating complication of a variety of malignant solid tumors. Diagnosis relies predominantly on neurological, radiographic, and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) assessments. Recently, liquid biopsy tests derived from CSF has shown to be a feasible, noninvasive promising approach to tumor molecular profiling for proper brain cancer diagnostic treatment, thereby providing an opportunity for CSF-based personalized medicine. However, LM is typically misleadingly assumed to originate from only one primary tumor type.

Astroblastoma is an uncommon neuroepithelial primary tumor of the brain which is of uncertain origin. We present a case of high-grade astroblastoma in an 18-year-old female with a severe headache, loss of appetite, vomiting and generalized weakness. RATIONALE: Collecting duct carcinoma (CDC) is a rare neoplasm arising from the collecting duct and should be distinguished from other renal cell carcinomas that mostly originated from the proximal tubular epithelium and tumors originated from the urothelium. It usually occurs in unilateral kidney, sometimes found with cystic change.
