Gestational Hypertension and Human Breast Milk Composition in Correlation with the Assessment of Fetal Growth-A Pilot Study.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: 1 in 10 pregnant women is diagnosed with gestational hypertension. Increasing evidence suggests that preeclampsia, gestational diabetes and gestational hypertension may affect human breast milk's lactogenesis and percentage composition. We aimed to examine whether there is any significant influence of gestational hypertension on the composition of macronutrients in human breast milk and to assess its correlation with fetal growth. METHODS: A total of 72 breastfeeding women (34 diagnosed with gestational hypertension and 38 normotensive women during pregnancy) were recruit

Prenatal ethanol exposure and changes in fetal neuroendocrine metabolic programming.

Prenatal ethanol exposure (PEE) (mainly through maternal alcohol consumption) has become widespread. However, studies suggest that it can cause intrauterine growth retardation (IUGR) and multi-organ developmental toxicity in offspring, and susceptibility to various chronic diseases (such as neuropsychiatric diseases, metabolic syndrome, and related diseases) in adults. Through ethanol's direct effects and its indirect effects mediated by maternal-derived glucocorticoids, PEE alters epigenetic modifications and organ developmental programming during fetal development, which damages the offsprin…

Dietary intakes of iron, folate, and vitamin B12 during pregnancy and correlation with maternal hemoglobin and fetal growth: findings from the ROLO longitudinal birth cohort study.

PURPOSE: Dietary micronutrient intakes of iron, folate and vitamin B12 are known to influence hemoglobin. Low maternal hemoglobin (maternal anemia) has been linked to low birthweight and other adverse health outcomes in the fetus and infant. Our primary aim was to explore relationships between maternal dietary micronutrient intakes, maternal full blood count (FBC) parameters and fetal abdominal circumference (AC) and estimated fetal weight (EFW) growth trajectories. Secondarily, we aimed to assess relationships between maternal dietary micronutrient intakes, maternal hemoglobin values and plac

Correlation between Maternal Weight Gain in Each Trimester and Fetal Growth According to Pre-Pregnancy Maternal Body Mass Index in Twin Pregnancies.

Background andObjectives: This study aimed to determine the correlation between maternal weight gain in each trimester and fetal growth according to pre-pregnancy maternal body mass index in twin pregnancies. Materials and Methods: We conducted a retrospective review of the medical records of 500 twin pregnancies delivered at 28 weeks’ gestation or greater at a single tertiary center between January 2011 and December 2020. We measured the height, pre-pregnant body weight, and maternal body weight of women with twin pregnancies and evaluated the relationship between the maternal weight gain at

Maternal lipid profile in early pregnancy is associated with foetal growth and the risk of a child born large-for-gestational age: a population-based prospective cohort study : Maternal lipid profile in early pregnancy and foetal growth.

BACKGROUND: Lipids such as cholesterol and triglycerides play an important role in both maternal and foetal energy metabolism. Little is known about maternal lipid levels in pregnancy and their effect on foetal growth. The aim of this study was to assess maternal lipid levels, foetal growth and the risk of small-for-gestational age (SGA) and large-for-gestational age (LGA). METHODS: We included 5702 women from the Generation R Study, a prospective population-based cohort. Maternal lipid levels (total cholesterol, triglycerides and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol [HDL-c]) were measured in

Maternal and fetal ultrasonographic characteristics, vulvar temperature, and vaginal mucous impedance as variables associated with the onset of parturition in term and induced pre-term ewes.

The aim of this study was to assess and compare ultrasonographic characteristics of maternal and fetal structures, vulvar temperatures, and vaginal mucous impedance in pregnant ewes in the term parturition group (TPG, n = 15) and induced pre-term parturition group (IPPG; n = 15). All the measurements were taken every 12 h throughout the last gestational week. Maternal and fetal structures and the fetal heart rate (HR) were assessed using ultrasonography. The vulvar temperature and vaginal mucous impedance were determined using a non-contact infrared thermometer, and an electronic estrous detec

Lung development and emerging roles for type 2 immunity.

Lung development is a complex process mediated through the interaction of multiple cell types, factors and mediators. In mice, it starts as early as embryonic day 9 and continues into early adulthood. The process can be separated into five different developmental stages: embryonic, pseudoglandular, canalicular, saccular, and alveolar. Whilst lung bud formation and branching morphogenesis have been studied extensively, the mechanisms of alveolarisation are incompletely understood. Aberrant lung development can lead to deleterious consequences for respiratory health such as bronchopulmonary dysp

Maternal Transient Receptor Potential Vanilloid 6 (Trpv6) Is Involved In Offspring Bone Development.

Embryonic growth and bone development depend on placental Ca2+ transport across the feto-maternal barrier to supply minerals to the fetus. The individual factors and cellular mechanisms that regulate placental Ca2+ transfer, however, are only beginning to emerge. We find that the Ca2+ -selective transient receptor potential vanilloid 6 (TRPV6) channel is expressed in trophoblasts of the fetal labyrinth, in the yolk sac, and in the maternal part of the placenta. Lack of functional TRPV6 channels in the mother leads to a reduced Ca2+ content in both placenta and embryo. Ca2+ uptake in trophoblas

Contribution of GRB10 to the prenatal phenotype in Silver-Russell syndrome? Lessons from 7p12 copy number variations.

The growth factor binding protein 10 (GRB10) has been suggested as a candidate gene for Silver-Russell syndrome because of its localization in 7p12, its imprinting status, data from mice models and its putative role in growth. Based on a new patient with normal growth carrying a GRB10 deletion affecting the paternal allele and data from the literature, we conclude that the heterogeneous clinical findings in patients with copy number variations (CNVs) of GRB10 gene depend on the size and the gene content of the CNV. However, evidence from mouse and human cases indicate a growth suppressing role

Antenatal exposure to second hand smoke of non-smoking mothers and growth rate of their infants.

OBJECTIVES: There is limited evidence on the effect of exposure to second hand smoke (SHS) in non-smoking pregnant mothers and infant health. We assessed the effects of maternal antenatal exposure to SHS on infant growth rate, and secondarily, on birth weight, birth length and head circumference at birth. METHODS: In this prospective cohort, 305 mother-infant pairs were studied. Mothers filled out questionnaires about exposure to SHS in pregnancy at the 3rd trimester of pregnancy. Infant anthropometry was performed at birth, day 7, and months 1, 2, 4, and 6, postnatally. Linear mixed modeling

Rates of myogenesis and myofiber numbers are reduced in late gestation IUGR fetal sheep.

Intrauterine growth-restricted (IUGR) fetuses are born with reduced skeletal muscle mass. We hypothesized that reduced rates of myogenesis would contribute to fewer and smaller myofibers in IUGR fetal hindlimb muscle compared to the normally growing fetus. We tested this hypothesis in IUGR fetal sheep with progressive placental insufficiency produced by exposing pregnant ewes to elevated ambient temperatures from 38 to 116 days gestation (dGA; term = 147 dGA). Surgically catheterized control (CON, n = 8) and IUGR (n = 13) fetal sheep were injected with intravenous 5-bromo-2′-deoxyuridine (BrdU

The influence of fetal sex on the antenatal diagnosis of small for gestational age.

OBJECTIVE: We evaluated the influence of fetal sex on the antenatal diagnosis and detection of small for gestational age (SGA). METHODS: The cohort consisted of unselected singleton pregnancies, undergoing routine biometry and cerebroplacental ratio (CPR) assessment at 36 weeks. Locally fitted equations for centiles and Z scores were used. "Ultrasound SGA" was defined as estimated fetal weight (EFW) < 10th centile, "SGA at birth" as birthweight (BW) < 10th centile adjusted for sex. RESULTS: Among 4112 pregnancies, there were 235 female "ultrasound SGA" fetuses and 177 male; (odds ratios (OR)

Effect of supplementation with methyl-donor nutrients on neurodevelopment and cognition: considerations for future research.

Pregnancy represents a critical period in fetal development, such that the prenatal environment can, in part, establish a lifelong trajectory of health or disease for the offspring. Poor nutrition (macro- or micronutrient deficiencies) can adversely affect brain development and significantly increase offspring risk for metabolic and neurological disease development. The concentration of dietary methyl-donor nutrients is known to alter DNA methylation in the brain, and alterations in DNA methylation can have long-lasting effects on gene expression and neuronal function. The decreased availabili…
