Successful treatment of nonpurging bulimia nervosa with desipramine: a double-blind, placebo-controlled study.

Twenty-three women with nonpurging bulimia underwent a 12-week, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial of desipramine hydrochloride. Repeated standardized rating scales, mood assessments, and self-reports of dietary habits were used to measure changes in binge frequency and cognitive processes associated with food intake. The women who received desipramine reduced their frequency of binge eating by 63%, but women receiving placebo increased their frequency of binge eating by 16%. Twelve weeks after initiating treatment, 60% of the treatment group but only 15% of the placebo group abstained fro

Pneumonia, lung abscesses and pleuritis in adult horses: a review of 51 cases.

Case records are reviewed of 51 adult horses in which a diagnosis of pneumonia, pulmonary abscess or pleuritis had been made. Forty-five horses were afflicted with pneumonia and/or pulmonary abscesses; in 11 of these the infection was primary, whereas in 34 it was secondary to another disease process (inhalation of food or saliva, thoracic trauma, generalised infection, airway disease, neoplasia or thromboembolism). Of the 11 horses with primary pulmonary infections, 10 appeared to be associated with a previous episode of stress; this took the form of long distance travel in eight cases. There

Local variations in the staining patterns of keratin antigens and blood group antigens in normal rodent oral epithelia.

All rodent oral epithelia are orthokeratinized. However, morphological, immunohistochemical and biochemical studies have shown that regional differences exist. In the present study, intraregional variations in differentiation patterns of rat oral epithelia are demonstrated using monoclonal anti-keratin antibodies AE1 and AE2 and antibodies to blood group antigens B and H. Well-defined areas of rat buccal and hard palate epithelium differed from the general staining patterns of these epithelia. These areas were associated with a papillary surface contour. These local variations were not found i

[Morphological characteristics of cellular elements in the focus of posttraumatic inflammation in thiamine deficiency].

The influence of vitamin B1-deficiency on the ultrastructure of the cellular elements in the focus of aseptic inflammation in the skeletal muscles was studied in white mice, 2 and 3 days after the infliction of a mechanical trauma. Food B1-hypovitaminosis was induced by keeping the animals on a thiamine-deficient ration during 30 days. Oxythiamine hypovitaminosis was simulated by subcutaneous injections of vitamin B1 antimetabolite--oxythiamine, in a dose of 10 mg/kg, every 12 h, during 10 days. Both types of hypovitaminosis induced similar reactions of the cellular elements. The volume fracti

[Effect of vagotomy on gastrin secretion in patients with duodenal ulcer].

The basal and food-stimulated gastrin secretion after selective proximal vagotomy, selective gastric vagotomy and truncular vagotomy was found to be elevated. Hypergastrinemia increased as gastric secretion was inhibited, thus attesting to the role of acid formation inhibition in the origin of the postvagotomy increase in the hormonal secretion. However the values of the intragastral pH being equal, the blood gastrin level was higher after vagotomy as compared to that seen in unoperated peptic ulcer patients. After vagotomy coupled with antrumectomy gastrin secretion remained at the level seen

Effect of androgens on the ontogeny of humoral immunity in chickens.

Steroids have significant influences on the immune system of birds and mammals, and the Food and Drug Administration should consider them in the regulatory review process. As discussed here, androgens have different effects depending on dose and the timing of administration. If given in sufficient amount during the critical time of bursal development, androgens may delay or permanently impair development of humoral immunity. If given after the bursa has developed, androgens apparently cause precocious migration without precocious maturation. Possibly, the cells fail to mature because of the ab

Real-World Snapshot of Dietary Patterns in Subjects Living with Chronic Kidney Disease.

Background/Objectives: Chronic kidney disease (CKD) represents a major global public health challenge. Diet plays a central role in CKD management, with guidelines emphasizing individualized intake of energy, macronutrients, and micronutrients in combination with medical treatment. In recent years, increasing attention has been directed toward diet quality and the degree of food processing, particularly the consumption of ultra-processed foods (UPFs), which have been linked to adverse metabolic and renal outcomes. However, limited data are available on the real-life dietary patterns of individ

Development of a Generic Bio-Interface for Immuno-Biodetection on an Oxide Surface Targeting Pathogen Bacteria.

With the increase in contamination by microbial agents (bacteria, viruses, etc.) in the fields of agri-food, healthcare, and environment, it is necessary to detect and quantify these biological elements present in complex fluids in a short time with high selectivity, high sensitivity, and, if possible, moderate cost. Acoustic wave biosensors, based on immuno-detection, appear to meet a certain number of these criteria. In this context, we are developing a generic antibody-based biointerface that can detect a wide range of pathogenic bacterial agents using a specific bioreceptor. Based on the s

Regulation of the Biosynthesis of Phenolic Compounds in Vaccinium Berries.

Vaccinium berries are among the food ingredients with the highest levels and most diverse compositions of phenolic compounds, including anthocyanins, proanthocyanidins, and flavonols along with hydroxycinnamic acids. The biosynthesis of these compounds through the phenylpropanoid pathway is regulated via coordinated transcriptional control of the structural enzymes in the pathway by the MBW complex that involves interactions with DNA-binding R2R3MYB transcription factors, MYC-like basic helix loop helix (bHLH), and WD40-repeat proteins. Some upstream regulators of the pathway were also identif

Dysregulated gut hormone responses to nutrient ingestion in older adults with low appetite: a mechanism of anorexia of ageing?

Anorexia of ageing - the age-related reduction in appetite and food intake - is a public health concern for an ageing global population. However, current understanding of the aetiology of the condition is limited. In this review, evidence of gut hormone responses to feeding in older adults is reviewed, and it is proposed that a dysregulation of this process is a mechanism driving low appetite in later life. The evidence is synthesised to critically present this case, spotlighting recent data demonstrating a highly anorexigenic gut hormone profile in older adults exhibiting low appetite, which

Endocrine-disrupting properties of heavy metal exposure contribute to the intergenerational effects on learning and memory.

Heavy metals are increasingly recognized as endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs) capable of perturbing neurodevelopment and cognition across multiple generations. Among these, methylmercury (MeHg), lead (Pb), and cadmium (Cd) remain global public health concerns due to their environmental persistence, bioaccumulation in food and water sources, and widespread human exposure. Evidence from epidemiological and experimental studies demonstrates that these metals can interfere with hormonal signaling, neurogenesis, synaptic organization, neuroendocrine regulation and epigenetic programming-process

[Research Progress on the Biological Functions of Intestinal Eosinophils and Related Diseases].

Intestinal eosinophils are multifunctional immune cells that play a crucial role in maintaining intestinal homeostasis and participating in various disease processes. Under physiological conditions, these cells contribute to maintaining intestinal barrier function, regulating local microbiota homeostasis, promoting tissue repair, and modulating local immune responses by secreting various cytokines and bioactive mediators, thereby playing an essential role in sustaining intestinal homeostasis. In pathological conditions, however, eosinophils can release cytotoxic proteins and pro-inflammatory m

Kinetic description of changes in the size of casein microparticles under simulated gastric conditions.

Casein microparticles, which are gently produced by depletion flocculation and film drying, are suitable as a sustainable, biodegradable encapsulation material due to their pH-dependent swelling behaviour. However, the food protein casein is highly susceptible to degradation in the stomach due to its open, flexible conformation. In simulated gastric juice, the particles undergo different phases of shrinkage and swelling. Control experiments show that the initial two-stage shrinkage process and the subsequent swelling are due to the acidification of the particles. When pH 2 is reached, an almos

Protein fractions in cow milk inhibit decontamination by cold atmospheric plasma.

There is a growing body of research on the infection of cow milk by Prototheca algae, a potential human pathogen. This study presents investigations on plasma treatment to inactivate Prototheca directly in milk. However, microbiological tests revealed a surprisingly high survival rate of Prototheca in milk compared to saline solution treated under the same conditions. This phenomenon appears to be due to presence of proteins that act as scavengers of plasma reactive species, with OH• radicals playing a major role. Studies using MALDI-TOF MS, FTIR, XPS and UV-VIS on a model solution of peptone

Exploring impact of cold atmospheric plasma directed self-assembly of glycated bovine serum albumin.

Bovine Serum Albumin (BSA) is a globular, water-soluble protein widely used as a model system due to its stability, binding capacity, and structural similarity to human serum albumin (HSA). Cold atmospheric plasma (CAP) has emerged as a versatile tool for biomolecule modification, sterilization, food preservation, and wound healing. This study explores the effects of CAP on glycated BSA, focusing on structural and self-assembly processes. SEM analysis reveals that CAP induces distinct protein self-assemblies depending on treatment duration. Thioflavin assays show increased fluorescence intensi
