Bloodstream infections in patients with malignancies: implications for antibiotic treatment in a Ghanaian tertiary setting.

BACKGROUND: Bloodstream infections (BSI) remain a major cause of mortality in patients with malignancies. We present the first report on the microbiological profile of bacteraemia and fungaemia among cancer patients in Ghana. METHODS: From January 2010 through December 2013, we retrospectively analyzed the spectrum of bloodstream pathogens in cancer patients from Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital, Ghana--focusing on multidrug resistant isolates (MDRs). RESULTS: Overall BSI were confirmed in 22% (n = 93/453) of total blood cultures. Our data highlights a co-dominance of Gram-negative (n = 49/93, 52.

Protective role of the neuropeptide urocortin II against experimental sepsis and leishmaniasis by direct killing of pathogens.

We currently face an alarming resurgence in infectious diseases characterized by antimicrobial resistance and therapeutic failure. This has generated the urgent need of developing new therapeutic approaches that include agents with nontraditional modes of action. A recent interest focused on approaches based on our natural immune defenses, especially on peptides that combine innate antimicrobial activity against diverse pathogens and immunoregulatory functions. In this study, to our knowledge, we describe for the first time the antimicrobial activity of the neuropeptide urocortin II (UCNII) ag

Defensin-immunology in inflammatory bowel disease.

Defensins are endogenous antibiotics with microbicidal activity against Gram-negative and Gram-positive bacteria, fungi, enveloped viruses and protozoa. A disturbed antimicrobial defense, as provided by Paneth- and other epithelial cell defensins, seems to be a critical factor in the pathogenesis of inflammatory bowel diseases. Conspicuously, there is a relative lack of Paneth cell beta-defensins HD-5 and HD-6 in ileal Crohn's disease, both in the absence of a pattern recognition receptor NOD2 mutation and, even more pronounced, in its presence. This deficit is independent of concurrent active…

Clinical outcomes of neonatal meningitis in very-low birth-weight infants.

We sought to describe the clinical presentation and consequences of meningitis among 64 very-low-birth-weight (VLBW <1.5 kg) infants who had 67 culture-proven episodes of meningitis over an 18-year period, 1977 through 1995. Demographic and neonatal descriptors of meningitis and later outcomes were retrospectively examined and neurodevelopmental outcomes of 39 of 45 (87%) meningitis survivors were compared to those of nonmeningitis survivors followed up to 20 months corrected age. Causes of meningitis included coagulase-negative Staphylococcus in 43% of episodes, other gram-positive bacteria i…

Automatic Bacillus anthracis bacteria detection and segmentation in microscopic images using UNet+.

Anthrax is one of the important diseases in humans and animals, caused by the gram-positive bacteria spores called Bacillus anthracis. The disease is still one of the health problems of developing countries. Due to fatigue and decreased visual acuity, microscopic diagnosis of diseases by humans may not be of good quality. In this paper, for the first time, a system for automatic and rapid diagnosis of anthrax disease simultaneously with detection and segmentation of B. anthracis bacteria in microscopic images has been proposed based on artificial intelligence and deep learning techniques. Two …

CLA-1 and its splicing variant CLA-2 mediate bacterial adhesion and cytosolic bacterial invasion in mammalian cells.

CD36 and LIMPII analog 1, CLA-1, and its splicing variant, CLA-2 (SR-BI and SR-BII in rodents), are human high density lipoprotein receptors with an identical extracellular domain which binds a spectrum of ligands including bacterial cell wall components. In this study, CLA-1- and CLA-2-stably transfected HeLa and HEK293 cells demonstrated several-fold increases in the uptake of various bacteria over mock-transfected cells. All bacteria tested, including both Gram-negatives (Escherichia coli K12, K1 and Salmonella typhimurium) and Gram-positives (Staphylococcus aureus and Listeria monocytogene

Assessing non-porous antimicrobial surfaces against bacteria, phages and fungi: a comparative study under varied normative conditions using glass as a benchmark for microbial persistence.

The survival of pathogenic microorganisms on surfaces is contingent on environmental factors, including humidity and temperature. In order to analyze the survival and persistence in vitro, different protocols have already been implemented. This has resulted in a wide range of survival rates of all kinds of microorganisms on various surfaces tested, due to different procedures across laboratories. This study aims to provide a comprehensive overview of the antimicrobial performance of glass, as an inert reference material, and low alloyed carbon steel with different antimicrobial additives. Antibiotic Adjuvant Potential of Selected Essential Oil Components Against Respiratory Pathogens: From Planktonic Synergy to Early-Stage Biofilm Inhibition.

Background: Respiratory tract infections remain among the most common indications for antibiotic therapy and represent a major driver of antimicrobial resistance. The ability of respiratory pathogens to form biofilms further contributes to treatment failure and recurrence. This study aimed to evaluate the antibiotic adjuvant potential of selected essential oil components against clinically relevant respiratory bacteria and to determine whether planktonic synergistic interactions translate into early-stage antibiofilm efficacy. Thymol, eugenol, trans-cinnamaldehyde, and terpinen-4-ol were teste

Low-dose blue light extends the antibacterial spectrum of bacitracin against Escherichia coli.

BACKGROUND: Bacitracin, a narrow-spectrum antimicrobial peptide, is primarily effective against Gram-positive bacteria but lacks efficacy against Gram-negative bacteria like Escherichia coli due to intrinsic resistance. The global rise in antibiotic resistance necessitates innovative strategies to enhance the utility of existing drugs. Blue light (BL) has emerged as a promising non-pharmacological antimicrobial approach. This study investigates whether low-dose BL can broaden bacitracin's antibacterial spectrum to include E. coli, potentially reducing reliance on combination therapies. METHOD…
