Gender dimensions of the impact of HIV/AIDS on stunting in children under five years in Zimbabwe.

BACKGROUND: HIV/AIDS can have a disastrous effect on household food and nutrition security outcomes such as stunting in children under 5. However, stunting and HIV/AIDS are highly gendered phenomena that need to be explored in order to get an in-depth understanding of the interrelationship. This study was therefore aimed at investigating gender dimensions of the impact of HIV/AIDS on stunting in children under 5 years in Zimbabwe. METHODS: The study uses a large scale nationally representative cross-sectional dataset of 13,854 Zimbabwean households for the year 2019. To test hypothesis 1, the

Association of anthropometric indices of nutritional status with growth in height among Limboo children of Sikkim, India.

Aim: Influence of nutrition in human growth failure, especially stunting, is a well-accepted idea. The present study assesses the influence of nutrition and non-nutritional factors on height growth in a short stature population. Material and methods: The present study was conducted among the children and adolescents of Sikkim, India. The sample size was 538 (boys and girls) of age 2-18 years. The anthropometric indices mid upper arm circumference-for-age Z-scores (MUACZ) and BMI-for-age Z-scores (BAZ) were utilised as proxy of nutritional status and growth was assessed using height-for-age Z-s

Novel Mutation in LARP7 in Two Iranian Consanguineous Families with Syndromic Intellectual Disability and Facial Dysmorphism.

BACKGROUND: Recently, we have reported mutations in LARP7 gene, leading to neurodevelopmental disorders (NDDs), the most frequent cause of disability in children with a broad phenotype spectrum and diverse genetic landscape. METHODS: Here, we present two Iranian patients from consanguineous families with syndromic intellectual disability, facial dysmorphism, and short stature. RESULTS: Whole-exome sequencing (WES) revealed a novel homozygous stop-gain (c.C925T, p.R309X) variant and a previously known homozygous acceptor splice-site (c.1669-1_1671del) variant in LARP7 gene, indicating the dia

Retrobulbarly injecting nerve growth factor attenuates visual impairment in streptozotocin-induced diabetes rats.

PURPOSE: To explore whether retrobulbar administration of nerve growth factor (NGF) can restore visual function of streptozotocin-induced diabetes rats. METHODS: A high-sucrose/high-fat diet and single injection of streptozotocin (STZ) were used in modeling diabetes. During week 13-15 after STZ injection, diabetic rats were received retrobulbar βNGF injection. On week 17 after STZ injection, the rats were tested with flash visual evoked potential (FVEP) to reflect visual function and with both optical coherence tomography (OCT) and hematoxylin and eosin (H&E) staining to show retinal morpholo

Prevalence of celiac disease in patients with short stature: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Short stature is a common extraintestinal manifestation of celiac disease (CeD). We conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis to assess the global prevalence of CeD in patients presenting with short stature. METHODS: We searched Medline and EMBASE databases for the keywords "celiac disease, coeliac disease, anti-gliadin, tissue transglutaminase antibody, anti-endomysial antibody, short stature and growth retardation." All the studies published from January 1991 to May 2020 were included. Patients without any prior evaluation for short stature were classified as all-c

Cerebral vasoreactivity, a surrogate marker of cerebrovascular disease, is not impaired in subjects with lifetime, untreated, congenital isolated GH deficiency.

OBJECTIVES: Cerebrovascular disease (CeVD) is a major cause of death and disability. The role of the GH/IGF-I axis on CeVD risk is controversial. Patients with GH deficiency (GHD) in the setting of hypopituitarism often exhibit CeVD predisposing factors, like low nitric oxide generation, endothelial dysfunction, increased visceral fat mass, increased levels of LDL cholesterol, and increased intima-media thickness, a surrogate marker of atherosclerosis. However, several confounders such as the primary hypothalamic-pituitary lesion, hormonal replacement therapies, consequences of surgery and rad

Impact of home food production on nutritional blindness, stunting, wasting, underweight and mortality in children: a systematic review and meta-analysis of controlled trials.

Vitamin A deficiency is highly prevalent and remains the major cause of nutritional blindness in children in low-and middle-income countries, despite supplementation programmes. Xeropthalmia (severe drying and thickening of the conjunctiva) is caused by vitamin A deficiency and leads to irreversible blindness. Vitamin A supplementation programmes effectively reduce vitamin A deficiency but many rural children are not reached. Home food production may help prevent rural children's vitamin A deficiency. We aimed to systematically review trials assessing effects of home food production (also call

Reduced spontaneous platelet aggregation: a novel risk factor for adverse pregnancy outcome.

OBJECTIVE: Spontaneous platelet aggregation has not been adequately assessed as a potential risk factor for adverse outcomes in pregnancy. Therefore the objective of this study was to assess spontaneous platelet aggregation (SPA), measured via a novel functional assay, as a risk factor for hypertensive disease and intra-uterine growth restriction (IUGR). STUDY DESIGN: This was a prospective longitudinal study. Spontaneous platelet aggregation was assessed as a marker of platelet reactivity using a modification of light transmission aggregometry. Platelet reactivity was assessed in four groups

Diagnostics of SHOX gene rearrangement in 46,XX women with idiopathic short stature.

INTRODUCTION: The SHOX gene has been mapped at the pseudoautosomal region 1 (PAR1) of chromosomes X (Xp22.33) and Y (Yp11.32). The loss of SHOX gene functionality is assumed to be responsible for the Leri-Weill syndrome formation and the disproportionate short stature (DSS). The SHOX gene rearrangements constitute the majority of cases of gene functionality loss. Therefore, a practical application of the method, which allows for the diagnostics of the gene rearrangements, becomes a primary issue. With such an assumption, the MLPA technique (multiplex ligation - dependent probe amplification) b

PERIOPERATIVE CARE OF AN INFANT WITH GOMEZ-LOPEZ-HERNANDEZ SYNDROME.

Gomez-Lopez-Hernandez syndrome, also known as cerebello-trigeminal dermal dysplasia, is a rare neurocutaneous syndrome classically characterized by the triad of rhombencephalosynapsis, trigeminal anesthesia, and bilateral parietal alopecia. Associated clinical features include a characteristic facial appearance (mid-face hypoplasia, hypertelorism, and low-set, posteriorly rotated ears), brachycephaly, strabismus, ataxia, developmental delay, short stature, and corneal opacities. Given the associated congenital anomalies, anesthetic care may be required for various surgical interventions. We re

Expression and ontogeny of growth hormone (Gh) in the protogynous hermaphroditic ricefield eel (Monopterus albus).

Growth hormone (GH) is a single-chain polypeptide hormone mainly secreted by somatotropes of the anterior pituitary gland and is an important regulator of somatic growth in vertebrates including teleosts. In this study, a polyclonal antiserum against ricefield eel Gh was generated and the expression of Gh at the mRNA and protein levels was analyzed. Both RT-PCR and western blot analysis showed that Gh was predominantly expressed in the pituitary glands of ricefield eels. The immunoreactive Gh signals were localized to the multicellular layers of the adenohypophysis adjacent to the neurohypophy

The triad of Iron deficiency anemia, hepatosplenomegaly and growth retardation with normal serum zinc levels in a 14-year-old boy.

A triad of iron deficiency anemia, hepatosplenomegaly and growth retardation occurring in tandem with zinc deficiency has been reported in the past as components of either Prasad's syndrome or hypopituitarism. There are no documented cases of such triad occurring in the presence of normal serum zinc levels. We report a case of a 14-year-old boy who presented with iron deficiency anemia, hepatosplenomegaly, geophagia and growth retardation with pubertal delay. Investigations ruled out hypopituitarism and coeliac disease. The patient improved dramatically and attained puberty within 15 months of

Vascular calcification and renal bone disorders.

At the early stage of chronic kidney disease (CKD), the systemic mineral metabolism and bone composition start to change. This alteration is known as chronic kidney disease-mineral bone disorder (CKD-MBD). It is well known that the bone turnover disorder is the most common complication of CKD-MBD. Besides, CKD patients usually suffer from vascular calcification (VC), which is highly associated with mortality. Many factors regulate the VC mechanism, which include imbalances in serum calcium and phosphate, systemic inflammation, RANK/RANKL/OPG triad, aldosterone, microRNAs, osteogenic transdiffe
