Pre-donation screening for blood safety: comparison between 3- and 6-month deferral of men who have sex with men and the incorporation of individual risk assessment.

INTRODUCTION: Advances in blood donor screening have supported the shortening of deferral intervals and incorporation of individual risk assessment. This study investigated the potential impacts of comparing 3‑ and 6‑month deferral periods for men who have sex with men and introducing a behaviour‑based individual risk assessment policy in Hong Kong, particularly on donor eligibility and blood safety. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted in March 2024, recruiting individuals who had successfully donated blood in October 2023 in Hong Kong. Participants completed a survey on transfusio

Differential influences of mpox illness representation on sexual behaviors among gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men in Beijing and Hong Kong.

BACKGROUND: Mpox perceptions may influence the onset of sexual behaviors (e.g., condomless anal sex [CAS] with men, number of male sex partners, and sexualized drug use) among gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men (GBMSM). However, no studies have examined how mpox illness representations relate to sexual behaviors. This study examined the associations between mpox illness representations and presence of sexual behaviors among GBMSM in Beijing and Hong Kong. METHODS: This secondary analysis of a cross-sectional survey conducted between November 2023 and March 2024 among GBMSM in B

Rethinking the Role of HIV/AIDS Memories in Gay Men's Experiences of COVID-19 Fear: The Centrality of Social and Ethnic Inequalities.

This paper examines how gay men in the UK experienced fear during the COVID-19 pandemic, and how these experiences were shaped by memories of HIV/AIDS, ethnicity, socio-economic position and access to social support. Although much scholarship assumes that HIV casts a long shadow over gay men's responses to subsequent health crises, we explore to what extent HIV memories actually structured COVID-19 fear. Drawing on 45 semi-structured interviews with gay men of diverse ages, ethnic backgrounds and HIV statuses, we identify three overlapping forms of COVID-19 fear: fear of contagion, fear of inf

Inequities in willingness to disclose contact information to access free mpox self-testing kits among MSM in China: a COM-B-informed multi-center study.

BACKGROUND: Free mpox self-testing often requires disclosure of personal contact information (e.g., phone numbers or social media IDs). Among men who have sex with men (MSM), this requirement can function as an access gate with unequal impacts across socioeconomic and regional contexts. Using the Capability, Opportunity, Motivation-Behavior (COM-B) framework, we examined psychosocial and socioeconomic correlates of willingness to disclose among MSM in China. METHODS: We conducted an anonymous online cross-sectional survey (November 2023-March 2024) in six provincial regions representing three

Undetectable = Untransmittable (U = U) Awareness and HIV Treatment Optimism Among Men Who Have Sex with Men in Mumbai, India.

Little is known about Undetectable=Untransmittable (U = U) awareness among MSM in India. We analyzed baseline survey data from MSM (N = 1004) in an mHealth HIV testing trial in Mumbai and Thane, India. We assessed factors associated with U = U awareness and agreement (HIV treatment optimism) using multivariable Poisson regression. U = U awareness (29%) was associated with English survey completion, searching for sexual health information online, awareness of PrEP/PEP, and participation in MSM-focused HIV prevention programs (all P < 0.05). Overall, 50% of the participants agreed with HIV treat

Impact of bacterial sexually transmitted infections on human papillomavirus and anal dysplasia in people living with HIV.

Anal carcinoma is a relevant malignancy with increased incidence among people living with HIV (PLHIV), particularly in men who have sex with men (MSM) and transgender women (TW). Its main precursor lesion, high-grade anal intraepithelial neoplasia (HGAIN), is primarily associated with persistent infection with human papillomavirus (HPV). However, bacterial sexually transmitted infections (STIs) have been proposed as potential cofactors in anal carcinogenesis. The objectives of this study are to evaluate the relationship between asymptomatic bacterial anal STIs, the presence of HGAIN, and the d

Italy is ready-extended PrEP cascade, and determinants of intention to use long-acting PrEP and unmet PrEP needs among men who have sex with men, trans* individuals, heterosexual women, and men.

BACKGROUND: Italy has recently expanded access to oral pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) and made rapid progress in long-acting PrEP (LA-PrEP) availability. These developments create a unique opportunity to assess population-level readiness for LA-PrEP and identify gaps that may limit its public health impact. AIM: To assess an extended PrEP cascade, quantify unmet prevention needs that LA-PrEP could mitigate, and identify determinants of LA-PrEP intention across key populations (KPs) in Italy. METHODS: We analysed data from the PROTECT cross-sectional survey (October 2023-April 2024), includi

Asymptomatic Screening for Neisseria gonorrhoeae Among Gay and Bisexual Men Attending Public Sexual Health Services in Australia and Associations With Patterns of Ceftriaxone Consumption: A Retrospective Observational Study.

BACKGROUND: Neisseria gonorrhoeae is a significant public health concern due to rising antimicrobial resistance. Current strategies for N gonorrhoeae among gay and bisexual men (GBM) include 3-month screening; however, high-frequency screening may increase ceftriaxone consumption, potentially contributing to antimicrobial resistance. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective cohort study of GBM screened for N gonorrhoeae at 16 Australian public sexual health services between 2016 and 2023. We classified N gonorrhoeae tests and ceftriaxone prescriptions as screening-related (asymptomatic screening

Higher Expression of HPV16 Derived E7_LI Transcript Observed in Men With HIV and Recurrent Anal Cancer.

Squamous cell carcinoma of the anus (SCCA) or anal cancer (AC) is an understudied cancer with a high occurrence rate in people with HIV (PWH), especially men having sex with men (MSM). Furthermore, AC recurs in approximately one-fourth of patients who undergo standard care with chemoradiation therapy (CRT). Using bulk RNA sequencing data of AC obtained from 12 patients with non-recurrent (NR, N = 9) or recurrent (R, N = 3) cancer, we previously showed upregulated expression of key immune genes in the NR compared to the R group. Although the main causative agent of AC is high-risk human papillo

Gay Community Connectedness, Internalized Homonegativity, and HIV Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP) Attitudes and Use Among Men Who Have Sex with Men in Georgia: A Mediation Analysis.

Georgia has one of the highest HIV diagnosis rates in the U.S., yet only 33% of Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP) users in the Deep South live there. This study aims to determine the potential mediational role of internalized homonegativity and attitudes towards PrEP between gay community connectedness and PrEP use among men who have sex with men (MSM) living in Georgia. Participants (N = 121) completed an online survey in June 2020. PrEP use (yes/no) was defined by the question "the last time you had sex, were you taking PrEP, like Truvada?" The study also used the "8-item Identification and In

Prevalence of chemsex and associated factors among gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men in Nepal: findings from an online national survey.

The increase in the chemsex phenomenon among gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men (GBMSM) is alarming, as it is associated with risky sexual behaviors, including condomless sex and multiple sex partners. Despite increasing concerns, there is nonexistent research on chemsex among GBMSM in Nepal. Therefore, our study aimed to identify the prevalence and factors associated with engagement in chemsex among GBMSM in Nepal. A cross-sectional online survey of 842 Nepali GBMSM was conducted between March and May 2024. Multivariable logistic regression was used to identify factors associa
