Quantitative evaluation of nursing intervention efficacy in high-risk hypertensive disorders of pregnancy: A retrospective quasi-experimental study.

Hypertensive disorders of pregnancy (HDP) contribute significantly to maternal and neonatal morbidity. Precision medicine emphasizes individualized risk prediction, while nursing interventions (NIs) address behavioral and psychosocial care. This study evaluated the clinical benefit of a structured NI compared to routine prenatal care in reducing complications among women diagnosed with HDP. This retrospective quasi-experimental study was conducted at Peking University Shenzhen Hospital. Participants were primigravida Chinese women (median age 25 years) with a confirmed diagnosis of HDP. Of 326

Racial differences in newborn intensive care morbidity in Alaska.

Birthweight-specific neonatal mortality for Alaska Natives is higher than for non-natives for the years 1987-1996. We investigated the reasons for this based on Level III Neonatal Intensive Care Unit information available from 1991-1996. We also investigated whether differences in mortality extended to measures of morbidity. There were less Native patients born at the tertiary care center for babies with birthweight < 1500 grams and 1500-2499 grams (64% for Natives and 87% for non-natives, p = .000). Differences in antenatal referral were only apparent for the population residing within the An

Lung Ultrasound-Guided Surfactant Therapy in Neonatal Pneumothorax and Pulmonary Hemorrhage: Pathophysiology, Diagnostic Ultrasonography, and Emerging Clinical Approaches.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Lung ultrasound (LUS) has fundamentally transformed neonatal respiratory diagnostics, offering a radiation-free, bedside-applicable modality capable of guiding surfactant therapy, characterizing pulmonary pathology, and monitoring treatment response in real time. While surfactant replacement therapy is firmly established for neonatal respiratory distress syndrome (RDS), its role in acute complications-specifically pulmonary hemorrhage (PH) and pneumothorax (PTX)-remains uncertain and heterogeneous in clinical practice. This review examines how LUS-based phenotyping c

Early age at menarche is associated with an increased risk of preeclampsia and adverse neonatal outcomes: a 6‑year retrospective study.

PURPOSE: Preeclampsia affects between 2 to 8% of pregnancies worldwide and is associated with significant adverse outcomes for both mothers and their offspring. The present study aims to investigate whether there is a correlation between early age at menarche and an increased risk of developing preeclampsia and experiencing adverse neonatal outcomes. METHODS: The study involved a review of medical records of 4227 pregnant women who gave birth at The First Affiliated Hospital of Chengdu Medical College between January 2017 and December 2022. The collected data included demographic characterist

A newborn with convulsions 12 days after birth was misdiagnosed as neonatal intracranial hemorrhage: Case report.

INTRODUCTION: Cases with early diagnosis of neonatal tuberous sclerosis syndrome (TSC) are relatively seldom seen, and misdiagnosis of intracranial hemorrhage is even more rare. We retrospectively analyzed the clinical data of a case of neonatal tuberous sclerosis with atypical early symptoms and misdiagnosed as more common intracranial hemorrhage of the newborn. PATIENT CONCERNS: The child was female and had no obvious cause of convulsion 12 days after birth. The local hospital was initially diagnosed as "neonatal intracranial hemorrhage, congenital heart disease," and still had convulsions

Comparison of the Montreux definition with the Berlin definition for neonatal acute respiratory distress syndrome.

To compare the similarities and differences between the Montreux definition and the Berlin definition in terms of the prevalence, mortality, and complications of neonatal acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS). We retrospectively analyzed the data of neonates with respiratory failure treated in a neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) between 1 November 2019 and 31 December 2021. In total, 554 infants had neonatal ARDS (524 infants, Montreux definition; 549 infants, Berlin definition). The prevalence (3.1% vs. 3.3%, p = 0.438) and mortality (18.9% vs.18.0%, p = 0.716) of neonatal ARDS did not

Neonatal outcomes in pregnant women with pulmonary arterial hypertension associated with heart disease.

BACKGROUND: As an increasing number of women with pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH) choose to become pregnant, outcomes in newborns have become a priority. The main purpose of this study was to compare the neonatal outcomes in pregnant women with PAH associated with heart disease. METHODS: A single-center retrospective study was performed. Pregnancy with heart disease is divided into three groups: no PAH, mild PAH and severe PAH. Neonatal outcomes of pregnant women were compared among groups. Meanwhile, multivariable analyses were used to investigate the association between maternal PAH a

The effect of antenatal indomethacin on extremely preterm neonatal kidney function.

Introduction/Objective: Indomethacin is an effective tocolytic to prevent extremely preterm birth. Prior studies have associated antenatal indomethacin exposure with adverse preterm neonatal intestinal and neurological outcomes. Indomethacin is a nephrotoxic medication that may also affect preterm neonatal kidneys. We sought to evaluate the effect of antenatal indomethacin on extremely preterm neonatal kidney function and acute kidney injury (AKI) in the first week of age. Methods: A retrospective cohort study was conducted on neonates born < 29 weeks at a level III neonatal intensive care unit

Neonatal donation: are newborns too young to be recognized?

Neonatal organ and tissue donation is not common practice in the Netherlands. At the same time, there is a transplant waiting list for small size-matched organs and tissues. Multiple factors may contribute to low neonatal donation rates, including a lack of awareness of this option. This study provides insight into potential neonatal organ and tissue donors and reports on how many donors were actually reported to the procurement organization. We performed a retrospective analysis of the mortality database and medical records of two largest neonatal intensive care units (NICUs) in the Netherlan

Platelet Bioenergetics and Associations With Delirium and Coma in Patients With Sepsis: A Prospective Cohort Study.

BACKGROUND: Since publication of the sentinel antenatal late preterm steroids clinical trial, the use of antenatal steroids has become a routine aspect of the management of pregnancies at risk for late preterm delivery. However, in practice, the administration of antenatal corticosteroids in the late preterm period is widely varied across provider and institution, and the process of implementation of this new practice as well as outcomes associated with implementation are not well understood. OBJECTIVE: The objective was to evaluate institutional adherence to an antenatal late preterm cortico

Neonatal Esophageal Perforation: A Comprehensive Review of the Literature.

Background/Objectives: Neonatal esophageal perforation (EP) is a rare but potentially life-threatening condition, primarily affecting preterm and very low birth weight infants. Iatrogenic injury-most commonly related to malpositioned naso- or orogastric tubes-represents the leading cause. Methods: We conducted a comprehensive review of EP cases diagnosed within the first 28 days of life and reported between 2004 and October 2025 in PubMed and Scopus databases. The analysis focused on clinical presentation, risk factors, diagnostic modalities, management strategies, and outcomes. Only English-l

Retrospective, multicentre evaluation of central congenital hypothyroidism in the UK.

OBJECTIVE: Central congenital hypothyroidism (incidence ∼1:13,000) occurs in isolation (40% cases) or with additional pituitary hormone deficiencies. T4 ± TSH-based neonatal screening detects central congenital hypothyroidism within the first two weeks of life, permitting prompt treatment, but the UK TSH-based screening programme will not detect these cases. We delineated clinical characteristics, time-frame and pathway to diagnosis in clinically diagnosed individuals. METHODS: Records were reviewed for 118 cases diagnosed from 1996 to 2022, in four tertiary centres. RESULTS: Median age at d

The perceived workload of first-line healthcare professionals during neonatal resuscitation.

BACKGROUND: Neonatal resuscitation is stressful for healthcare professionals as measured using the National Aeronautics and Space Administration-Task Load Index (NASA-TLX). Little is known regarding the perceived workload and associated factors among healthcare professionals including medical doctors (MDs) and nurses/midwives who have differences in training and experiences. We aimed to characterize and compare the perceived workload between MDs and nurses/midwives who provided neonatal resuscitation. METHODS: In a prospectively designed, cellphone-based surveillance, perceived workload and s

Adverse Maternal and Perinatal Outcomes of Meconium-Stained Amniotic Fluid in Term Labor at Hospitals in South Gondar Zone, Northwest Ethiopia: A Prospective Cohort Study.

BACKGROUND: The passage of meconium during labor increased the chance of undesirable birth outcomes. The adverse effects of meconium are worsening in resource-limited countries. In Ethiopia, there is an argument concerning meconium's negative effects and management on pregnant women and their babies. Therefore, this study was intended to assess the adverse maternal and perinatal outcomes of meconium in term labor in the South Gondar Zone, Ethiopia. METHODS: A prospective cohort study was conducted using 580 laboring mothers (145 exposed and 435 nonexposed groups). A two-stage sampling method
