Uterine smooth muscle tumors of uncertain malignant potential: a case presentation.

A 42-year-old virgin woman was admitted to our clinic with increasing menorrhagia and dysmenorrhea for several months. A pelvic ultrasound scan showed a 9 × 7 cm heterogeneous mass in the uterine cavity. Pelvic magnetic resonance imaging showed a large non-homogeneous tumor mass measuring 97 × 56 mm in the uterine cavity. After intravenous contrast material, cystic necrotic areas with marked contrast enhancement were observed in the solid lesion. Tumor markers were all within normal ranges. The patient underwent laparotomy, and total hysterectomy and bilateral salpingo-oophorectomy were perfor…

Adult hepatic cavernous haemangioma with highly elevated alpha-fetoprotein.

A 35-year-old Chinese man presented with dull pain in the right hypochondrial region for the previous 2 months. Laboratory examination revealed that his serum alpha-fetoprotein level was 1890 microg/L (reference range, 0-20 microg/L), and computed tomographic scan showed a hypodense lesion in the left liver lobe. At laparotomy, a dark reddish soft tumour (3.0 x 3.5 cm in diameter) was found in the medial segment of the liver (segment III). The tumour became markedly smaller than that before resection, and a vessel-like structure was found on the cut surface. Intra-operative pathology and posto…

Cutaneous zygomycosis: a possible postoperative complication in immunocompetent individuals.

Fungi in the class of zygomycetes usually produce serious infections in diabetics and immunocompromised hosts. Cutaneous zygomycosis is a less common form, with an unpredictable extent of anatomical involvement and clinical course. Here, we report two cases of primary cutaneous zygomycosis as postoperative complications in otherwise healthy females. Zygomycosis was suspected and specimens from the surgical debridement were examined by microbiological and histopathological studies for confirming the clinical diagnosis. Rapid diagnosis, liposomal amphotericin B, and proper debridement of affecte

Congenital colonic stenosis: a case of late-onset.

PURPOSE: Colonic atresia and stenosis are rare causes of intestinal obstruction in the infant. Only 1.8%-15% of intestinal atresias occur in … atation of the small intestinal loops. Suspecting an organic intestinal obstruction, an explorative laparotomy was deemed necessary and at halfway in the ascending colon a stenosis was found. RESULTS: The post-operative course was uneventful and the patient is currently in good clinical conditions, has a normal diet and is thriving. CONCLUSION: Considering …

Case report: Recurrence of a uterine tumor resembling ovarian sex-cord tumor.

BACKGROUND: Uterine tumors resembling ovarian sex-cord tumors are very rare uterine neoplasias that generally behave in a benign manner. We report the case of a uterine tumor resembling an ovarian sex-cord tumor that recurred after hysterectomy. CASE: A 35-year-old nulliparous woman presented with abdominal discomfort, galactorrhea and abnormal vaginal bleeding. Ultrasound examination showed a heterogeneous uterine tumor composed of cystic and solid parts. Because of the patient's desire to preserve fertility, tumor resection was scheduled. Frozen sections suggested malignancy and led to abdo

A newborn with chylous ascites caused by intestinal malrotation associated with heterotaxia syndrome.

Chylous ascites is a rare entity in infants. An uncommon cause of chylous ascites is intestinal malrotation. We report a case of a neonate with heterotaxia-polysplenia syndrome and intestinal malrotation who presented with chylous ascites and subsequently developed duodenal obstruction from midgut volvulus. He was successfully treated with peritoneal drainage, surgical intervention, and nutritional support. A brief overview of the association of chylous ascites, intestinal rotational anomalies and heterotaxia syndromes is discussed.

[On the strategy of operative treatment for obturative colonic obstruction of malignant genesis].

The authors have analyzed results of the Hartmann operation performed in 119 patients with malignant obturative obstruction of the left half of the colon at hospitals of general profile. A local relapse of cancer was found in 18 (15.1%) of patients, mean time between the primary and restorative operations was 7.4 months. The results of treatment were analyzed in 62 patients in whom the strategy of treatment of malignant colonic obstruction was used with the formation of the decompressive colostomy at the first stage, and radical extraction of the tumor with simultaneous removal of the stoma at

A comparison of vaginal, laparoscopic-assisted vaginal, and minilaparotomy hysterectomies for enlarged myomatous uteri.

OBJECTIVE: To compare the operative data and early postoperative outcome of vaginal hysterectomy (VH), laparoscopic-assisted vaginal hysterectomy (LAVH), and minilaparotomy hysterectomy (MiniLPT). METHODS: A total of 150 women who required hysterectomy for enlarged myomatous uteri were randomly allocated into 3 treatment groups: VH (n=50), LAVH (n=50), and MiniLPT (n=50). The primary outcome was hospital discharge time. The secondary outcomes were operative time, blood loss, paralytic ileus, postoperative pain, and intraoperative and early postoperative complications. RESULTS: Mean hospital …

Heterotropic pregnancy: a report of two cases.

Heterotropic pregnancy is reported infrequently in Nigeria. Two cases were managed within the span of five years with the successful delivery of a live term baby in one of the patients. A high clinical index of suspicion is required because an intra uterine gestation does not rule out a co-existing ectopic gestation especially in this region with high twinning rate and tubal disease

The abdominal cocoon: a rare cause of intestinal obstruction in two patients.

The abdominal cocoon is a rare disease that is characterized by total or partial encasement of the small bowel by a thick and fibrotic membrane. After an increased number of case reports, the characteristic age group and sex distribution of abdominal cocoon have changed. Although the etiology is unknown, congenital malformation is implicated as the causative factor in the two patients in this report. Although preoperative diagnosis is a matter of challenge and usually made at laparotomy, our experience suggests that computed tomographic evidence of clustered small bowel loops encased by a thin…

Sealing of gastrointestinal anastomoses with a fibrin glue-coated collagen patch: a safety study.

Sealing of anastomoses has previously been tested with several methods, including sealing with liquid fibrin glue. Sealing with a collagen patch coated with fibrin glue components has never been systematically examined. The aim of the present study was to determine the safety of sealing gastrointestinal anastomoses with a collagen patch coated with fibrin glue. The study is a prospective, experimental animal study comparing sealed and unsealed gastrointestinal anastomoses. Laparotomy was performed in 11 pigs under general anesthesia. In each pig two anastomoses were performed on the small inte…

Adult intussusception: a retrospective review.

PURPOSE: Whereas intussusception is relatively common in children, it is clinically rare in adults. The condition is usually secondary to a definable lesion. This study was designed to review adult intussusception, including presentation, diagnosis, and optimal treatment. METHODS: A retrospective review of 22 cases of intussusception occurring in individuals older than aged 18 years encountered at two university-affiliated hospitals in Winnipeg between 1989 and 2000. The 22 cases were divided to benign and malignant enteric, ileocolic, colonic lesions respectively. The diagnosis and treatment
