Sweden was the first country in the world to introduce a two-dose programme of vaccination against measles, mumps and rubella with a combined vaccine (MMR). It was commenced in 1982 and the vaccination was carried out at the ages of 18 months and 12 years. INTRODUCTION: Subacute sclerosing panencephalitis (SSPE) is a chronic neurodegenerative disease secondary to an infection of the central nervous system by the measles virus, with no effective treatment. The introduction of therapy with intraventricular interferon alpha (IFN-alpha) and its later association with ribavirin aroused new expectations. In experimental studies the two drugs were seen to exert a synergic effect in reducing viral replication. BACKGROUND: The Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices recommends a second dose of measles, mumps, and rubella vaccine (MMR2) at age 4 to 5 years of age, whereas the American Academy of Pediatrics suggests MMR2 immunization at age 11 to 12 years of age. Because there is little information on whether the rate of adverse reactions to MMR2 immunization varies among these two age groups, we took advantage of differing immunization policies at two large HMOs to compare the frequency of clinical events after, and possibly related to, MMR2 immunization.

A short-term, large-scale medical and feeding programme has been provided for a population of 150,000 in the bush area near Udi in eastern Nigeria (Biafra). By January 1969 8,000 patients were receiving medical treatment each week for varying degrees of protein malnutrition (including kwashiorkor), vitamin deficiency, and dehydration; while 100,000 received weekly rations of a protein-supplemented diet. Close cooperation between the medical team-which consisted of one doctor, four nurses, and two relief workers-and the local Ibo people contributed to the success of the relief programme.

UNLABELLED: Immune thrombocytopenic purpura (ITP) is an autoimmune disorder that causes isolated thrombocytopenia. Many viruses have been identified as triggering the autoimmune process, including HIV, MCV, EBV, parvovirus, rubella and measles. However, ITP in association with coronavirus infection has not previously been reported. We describe the case of a healthy man who presented with severe ITP complicated by intracranial haemorrhage following upper respiratory tract infection.
