5 patients with dermatitis or stomatitis related to the use of orthodontic appliances are described. All the patients were patch tested with the European standard series. One had a ++ reaction to potassium dichromate, one a ++ reaction to nickel, and the remaining 3 no positive patch tests. 3 of the patients had recurrent vesicular hand eczema, which flared after oral challenge with 1 of the metals used in their orthodontic appliances. 2 of these 3 patients had negative patch tests. Multiple sensitivity to metals is often seen in humans. This may be due to cross-reactivity or to multiple sensitization. The pattern of cross-reactivity to some metal compounds was studied, using the guinea pig maximization test method. Animals were induced with K2Cr2O7 and CoCl2, respectively, and then challenged with K2Cr2O7, CoCl2, NiSO4, PdCl2 and RhCl3. No simultaneous reactivity was recorded. The present study was designed to assess the effects of mercury on glomerular integrity during the early phase of acute renal failure. The silver amplification method showed distribution of mercury in midcortical and juxtamedullary glomeruli and on the brush border of the S2 segment of the proximal tubule 15 min after treatment. To evaluate the clinical usefulness of expandable metallic stents for maintenance of the dilated nasolacrimal sac and duct, double stents were implanted under fluoroscopic guidance in seven patients with severe epiphora after failed balloon dacryocystoplasty. 458 consecutive patients were patch tested with a metallic cobalt disc as a supplement to the standard series. 23 patients had a positive reaction to CoCl2 1% pet. Of these, 19 were tested with the cobalt disc. 11 had a positive reaction and 5 a questionable reaction. There were no positive reactions to the cobalt disc in patients with a negative patch test to CoCl2 1% pet. Patch testing with CoCl2 1% pet. diagnoses all patients with allergy to metallic cobalt, but the test method is limited by a high number of irritant and questionable reactions.

The carcinogenic properties of selected metals and their compounds are reviewed to provide a useful reference for existing knowledge on relationships between physical and chemical forms, kinetics and carcinogenic potential and between epidemiology, bioassays, and short-term tests. Extensive consideration is given to arsenic, beryllium, cadmium, chromium, lead, and nickel. Other metals such as antimony, cobalt, copper, iron, manganese, selenium, and zinc are discussed briefly.

A new technique of posterior lumbar interbody fusion (PLIF) using a cast cancellous metal blade is presented. A new shape of the metal implant which insures an immediate lumbar fusion is designed by the authors. This technique is used in 8 patients with spondylolisthesis and in 11 patients with lumbar instability. In all patients good and immediate fusion is achieved as well as satisfactory clinical effect. The operative technique is presented and advantages of this technique are discussed.

Ten bacterial isolates capable of growth on tetracyanonickelate(II) [K2[Ni(CN)4]] (TCN) as the sole nitrogen source were isolated from soil, freshwater, and sewage sludge enrichments. Various studies have shown a relationship to exist between toxic heavy metal accumulation and pathologic processes in various tissues. In the present study pathologic processes were found to be associated with an increase in the concentrations of various elements including Hg, Cd, Pb, Zn, Cu and Mn.
