A common IGF1R gene variant predicts later life breast cancer risk in women with preeclampsia.

PURPOSE: Preeclampsia has been inconsistently associated with altered later life risk of cancer. This study utilizes the Nurses' Health Study 2 (NHS2) to determine if the future risk of breast and non-breast cancers in women who experience preeclampsia is modified by carrying a protective variant of rs2016347, a functional insulin-like growth factor receptor-1 (IGF1R) single nucleotide polymorphism. METHODS: This retrospective cohort study completed within the NHS2 evaluated participants enrolled in 1989 and followed them through 2015, with a study population of 86,751 after exclusions. Cox p

Risk stratification for hospital-acquired venous thromboembolism in medical patients (RISE): Protocol for a prospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Hospital-acquired venous thromboembolism (VTE) is one of the leading preventable causes of in-hospital mortality. However, its risk assessment in medically ill inpatients is complicated due to the patients' heterogeneity and complexity of currently available risk assessment models (RAMs). The simplified Geneva score provides simplicity but has not yet been prospectively validated. Immobility is an important predictor for VTE in RAMs, but its definition is inconsistent and based on subjective assessment by nurses or physicians. In this study, we aim to prospectively validate the sim

Association between hypothermia in the first day of life and survival in the preterm infant.

OBJECTIVE: Hypothermia is associated with elevated mortality in the preterm infant. The preterm infant's thermoregulatory capacity is limited, and the thermal environment in an incubator is often perturbed by nursing procedures. We evaluated the incidence of a postnatal low body temperature and hypothermia in preterm infants and its association with mortality. METHODS: We measured the lowest body temperature during the first 24h of life (TBody Nadir 24h) and hypothermia (TBody Nadir 24h<36.0°C) in preterm infants (gestational age: 230-316 weeks) in a neonatal intensive care unit. Evaluation of Bioactivities of Bovine Milk Osteopontin Using a Knockout Mouse Model.

OBJECTIVES: Osteopontin (OPN) is a multifunctional protein present abundantly in human milk, but at low levels in bovine milk and infant formula. Bovine milk OPN (bmOPN) is commercially available, and may therefore, be added to formula. OPN exerts its multiple functions by binding to its receptors to activate cell signaling pathways. The OPN receptor (integrin)-binding site is conserved across species; therefore, bmOPN may exert bioactivities in humans and mice. The objective of the present study was to evaluate bioactivities of bmOPN using an established OPN knock-out (KO) mouse model. METHO
