A case of malignant anorectal melanoma is reported, which was treated by anorectal-sigmoid amputation, operation which did not prevent the occurrence, after 6 months, of metastases in the inguinal lymph nodes. On the basis of the reported case, the main etiological, histogenetic, prognostic and therapeutic aspects of these rare tumours are discussed.

Radical hysterectomy for uterine cervical cancer was performed on 469 patients without metastasis in either the parametrium (P) or pelvic node (N). In 225 of the patients, the tumor had invaded deeply, with the remaining non-invaded myometrium being less than 5 mm deep. In 54 of the patients, the tumor had invaded the vagina. Although thermography is generally considered to lack sufficient sensitivity to be a useful in diagnosis of cancer of the breast, the association of a thermal abnormality with some breast cancers cannot be discounted. The present paper reports on follow-up examinations of 246 patients after Ruthenium106 treatment of choroidal melanomas (follow-up time 1.8 to 13 years). In January 1988, 212 patients were alive and free of metastases; 15 had died, 12 of them of melanoma metastases, and 17 could not be followed up. A case of malignant amelanotic melanoma of the uterine cervix in a patient presenting with right hemiparesis and enlarged lymph nodes was diagnosed in Papanicolaou-stained cervical smears showing many melanoma cells. Melanoma cells with bizzare nuclear and cytoplasmic abnormalities, rarely seen in other tumors, helped to establish a positive diagnosis. The diagnosis was confirmed by histopathologic study of the endocervical surgical specimen, including a positive immunoperoxidase staining for S-100 protein.

Two cases of carcinoma in Crohn's disease of the colon are reported. One patient was a 30-year-old man who had asymptomatic Crohn's ileocolitis resulting in an acute presentation due to toxic dilatation of the colon. This was preceded by a short prodromal period of four weeks, characterized by intermittent diarrhea on the basis of a coloileal tumor fistula. A mucus-secreting adenocarcinoma was present in the sigmoid colon associated with both adjacent and one nearby focus of high-grade mucosal dysplasia. Pelvic wall and abdominal metastases were present, and the patient died two months later.

Clinical, cytologic, histologic and X-ray procedures were used in examining 120 patients with endometrial carcinoma. The results of pre- and intraoperative determination of clinical stage were compared in 65 cases of uterine extirpation with appendages and lymphadenectomy. The survival rates of 380 resected cases of lung cancer in our hospital were analyzed according to curability and histological cell type. The overall 5-year survival rate for stage I a cases was 64.5%, that for stage I b 52.3%, and that for stage II 26.7%. However, there were distinct differences in survival rates between stages I a-II with mediastinal lymph node dissection and those without mediastinal lymph node dissection. Malignant melanoma in a 21-year-old, gray, Arabian gelding was manifested by rapidly deteriorating lameness of the right pelvic limb. A melanotic, cutaneous mass of small dimensions was identified in the left jugular furrow. Exploratory laparoscopy revealed widespread infiltration of melanotic masses into the structures of the abdominal cavity. Necropsy indicated the lameness to have resulted from infiltration of neoplastic cells into the sacral nerves, dorsal root ganglia, proximal ischiatic nerve, and gluteal muscle fibers. An attempt was made by investigation of the operative specimens from 98 patients suffering from epidermoid carcinoma of the cervix to assess the relationship between lymphatic spread on one hand and tumor volume and anatomical stage on the other hand. This paper presents two cases of Rouviere node metastasis in carcinoma of the hypopharynx as confirmed by gallium scintigraphy. Invasion of the Rouviere nodes was clarified within six months of the onset of symptoms in both cases.
