Default mode network shows alterations for low-frequency fMRI fluctuations in euthymic bipolar disorder.

Bipolar disorder (BD) is a psychiatric condition causing acute dysfunctional mood states and emotion regulation. Specific neuropsychological features are often present also among patients in euthymic phase, who do not show clear psychotic symptoms, and for whom the characterization from functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) is very limited. This study aims at identifying the neural and behavioral correlates of the default mode network (DMN) using the fractional amplitude of low frequency fluctuations (fALFF). Eighteen euthymic BD patients (10 females; age = 54.50 ± 11.38 years) and sixt

Lightweight Driver Behavior Identification Model with Sparse Learning on In-Vehicle CAN-BUS Sensor Data.

This study focuses on driver-behavior identification and its application to finding embedded solutions in a connected car environment. We present a lightweight, end-to-end deep-learning framework for performing driver-behavior identification using in-vehicle controller area network (CAN-BUS) sensor data. The proposed method outperforms the state-of-the-art driver-behavior profiling models. Particularly, it exhibits significantly reduced computations (i.e., reduced numbers both of floating-point operations and parameters), more efficient memory usage (compact model size), and less inference tim

Computer-aided diagnosis system for breast ultrasound images using deep learning.

The purpose of this study was to develop a computer-aided diagnosis (CAD) system for the classification of malignant and benign masses in the breast using ultrasonography based on a convolutional neural network (CNN), a state-of-the-art deep learning technique. We explored the regions for the correct classification by generating a heat map that presented the important regions used by the CNN for human malignancy/benign classification. Clinical data was obtained from a large-scale clinical trial previously conducted by the Japan Association of Breast and Thyroid Sonology. Images of 1536 breast

Role of cerebellar GABAergic dysfunctions in the origins of essential tremor.

Essential tremor (ET) is among the most prevalent movement disorders, but its origins are elusive. The inferior olivary nucleus (ION) has been hypothesized as the prime generator of tremor because of the pacemaker properties of ION neurons, but structural and functional changes in ION are unlikely under ET. Abnormalities have instead been reported in the cerebello-thalamo-cortical network, including dysfunctions of the GABAergic projections from the cerebellar cortex to the dentate nucleus. It remains unclear, though, how tremor would relate to a dysfunction of cerebellar connectivity. To addr

Inferior frontal gyrus links visual and motor cortices during a visuomotor precision grip force task.

Coordination between vision and action relies on a fronto-parietal network that receives visual and proprioceptive sensory input in order to compute motor control signals. Here, we investigated with magnetoencephalography (MEG) which cortical areas are functionally coupled on the basis of synchronization during visuomotor integration. MEG signals were recorded from twelve healthy adults while performing a unimanual visuomotor (VM) task and control conditions. The VM task required the integration of pinch motor commands with visual sensory feedback. By using a beamformer, we localized the neura

Language lateralization in phonological, semantic and orthographic tasks: a slow evoked potential study.

Most of literature on language has shown how different word-classes activate distinct neural networks within linguistic cortical areas. The present investigation aimed to demonstrate that, by means of slow evoked potentials and using the same set of words in different tasks, it is possible to activate cortical networks that are spatially and temporally distinguished. Twenty healthy subjects had to evaluate, in a word pair matching session, whether two words rhymed (phonological task), were semantically related (semantic task) or were written in the same letter case (orthographic task). Slow wa

Digital modeling of the gallbladder for revealing microanatomical features and optimizing surgical approaches in gallbladder-preserving cholelithotomy.

With the advancement of minimally invasive techniques and the reevaluation of surgical indications, gallbladder-preserving cholecystolithotomy is anticipated to serve as an alternative to cholecystectomy in specific cases. The choice of surgical incision is critical for optimizing gallbladder function preservation, which is a pivotal factor influencing the prognosis of gallbladder-preserving cholecystolithotomy. Consequently, a comprehensive understanding of the distribution of microstructures, including gallbladder blood vessels and nerves, is of substantial significance. For this study, we s

Predictive coding accounts of shared representations in parieto-insular networks.

The discovery of mirror neurons in the ventral premotor cortex (area F5) and inferior parietal cortex (area PFG) in the macaque monkey brain has provided the physiological evidence for direct matching of the intrinsic motor representations of the self and the visual image of the actions of others. The existence of mirror neurons implies that the brain has mechanisms reflecting shared self and other action representations. This may further imply that the neural basis self-body representations may also incorporate components that are shared with other-body representations. It is likely that such

Where we look, what we know: how hippocampal predictions shape, and are shaped by, eye movements.

As we interact with our environment, information from hippocampal representations guides further cognition and action on a moment-to-moment basis. We propose that eye movements modulate the organization of neural dynamics in humans and other primates with advanced visual systems, allowing reciprocal encoding and retrieval of information in service of predictive action. Gaze fixations and saccades allow the hippocampus to generate, test and update predictions about the external world in real time. Integrating evidence from computational modelling, neurophysiology and neuroimaging, we highlight

120-Channel High-Fidelity Optical Multiplexing Using a Minimal Meta-Atom Set.

High-capacity optical multiplexing is crucial for next-generation intelligent information systems, spanning high-speed communications, optical computing, and immersive displays. A fundamental challenge is to maximize the number of independent channels while maintaining high fidelity, compact footprint, and low structural complexity, constraints that severely limit existing diffractive optical elements. Here, we overcome these long-standing trade-offs by introducing a multi-dimensional reconfigurable diffractive neural network (MRDNN) that enables high-capacity, high-fidelity optical multiplexi

De Novo-Designed Peptide-Engineered Multimodal Platform for Post-Ischemic Stroke Tissue Repair.

Orchestrating tissue regeneration in complex pathologies like post-ischemic stroke requires materials that can precisely regulate multiple signaling pathways. A central challenge is engineering a single platform integrating mechanical, electrical, and biochemical cues to redirect these pathological networks. Here, we present a computation-driven, multimodal hydrogel engineered to function as a programmable regulatory node. The system integrates a computationally screened de novo vasculogenic peptide scaffold and surface-engineered, inflammation-responsive conductive MXene nanosheets. This rati

Neural Control of Mastication: Ion-Channel Mechanisms in the Brainstem Central Pattern Generator.

Mastication is a fundamental rhythmic motor behavior controlled by a brainstem central pattern generator (CPG) located within the pontine and medullary reticular formations. Coordinated activation of jaw-opening and jaw-closing muscles is generated by this network and continuously refined through sensory feedback from periodontal mechanoreceptors and muscle spindles, together with descending inputs from the cortical masticatory area (CMA), basal ganglia, and cerebellum. Thus, mastication is regulated by distributed neural circuits rather than a single central locus. At the cellular level, the

Cortical synchronization of spontaneous trigeminal neuropathic pain monitored with in vivo optical imaging of calcium activity in freely moving mice.

OBJECTIVE: To determine the impact of neuropathic lesion on cortical synchronization in processing spontaneous pain-like behavior. BACKGROUND: In vivo optical monitoring of neuronal activity may provide insightful mechanisms underlying the complexity of spontaneous pain-like behavior in freely moving animals. METHODS: We examined the synchronized pattern of the pyramidical neurons in anterior cingulate cortex during spontaneous grooming behavior using optical monitoring of Ca2+ activity. A chronic constriction injury of infraorbital nerve model was performed to induce trigeminal neuropathic

Cerebellar Transcranial Alternating Current Stimulation Accelerates Motor Adaptation via the Modulation of Cortical Synchrony.

Motor adaptation is a form of motor learning that enables the updating of motor commands in response to sensory inputs, requiring computations at the cerebellar level that must be integrated into cerebral cortical networks for their implementation. We proposed that cerebellar-cortical integration, which underlies motor adaptation, is related to the modulation of frequency-specific oscillatory activity. We examined motor error and electrophysiological correlates (power spectrum and phase locking value analysis) measured during different sessions of transcranial alternating stimulation (tACS) de

Neural signatures of default mode network subsystems in first-episode, drug-naive patients with major depressive disorder after 6-week thought induction psychotherapy treatment.

Evidence indicates that the default mode network (DMN) plays a crucial role in the neuropathology of major depressive disorder (MDD). However, the neural signatures of DMN subsystems in MDD after low resistance Thought Induction Psychotherapy (TIP) remain incompletely understood. We collected functional magnetic resonance imaging data from 20 first-episode, drug-naive MDD and 20 healthy controls (HCs). The DMN was segmented into three subsystems and seed-based functional connectivity (FC) was computed. After 6-week treatment, the significantly reduced FCs with the medial temporal lobe memory s

Artificial Optoelectronic Synapse Based on Violet Phosphorus Microfiber Arrays.

Memristor-based artificial synapses are regarded as the most promising candidate to develop brain-like neuromorphic network computers and overcome the bottleneck of Von-Neumann architecture. Violet phosphorus (VP) as a new allotrope of available phosphorus with outstanding electro-optical properties and stability has attracted more and more attention in the past several years. In this study, large-scale, high-yield VP microfiber vertical arrays have been successfully developed on a Sn-coated graphite paper and are used as the memristor functional layers to build reliable, low-power artificial

Active Vision in Binocular Depth Estimation: A Top-Down Perspective.

Depth estimation is an ill-posed problem; objects of different shapes or dimensions, even if at different distances, may project to the same image on the retina. Our brain uses several cues for depth estimation, including monocular cues such as motion parallax and binocular cues such as diplopia. However, it remains unclear how the computations required for depth estimation are implemented in biologically plausible ways. State-of-the-art approaches to depth estimation based on deep neural networks implicitly describe the brain as a hierarchical feature detector. Instead, in this paper we propo

Machine learning for discovering anticancer compounds from plants and elucidating their mechanisms.

Plants are important sources of bioactive compounds with demonstrated anticancer and cancer-preventive properties. However, traditional methods for discovering and deciphering the mechanisms of these compounds are often slow and labor-intensive. The integration of machine learning (ML) provides a computational approach for bioactivity prediction, candidate prioritization, and mechanistic hypothesis generation. Algorithms including support vector machines (SVM) and graph neural networks (GNN) are increasingly employed to support multiple stages from compound screening to experimentally guided m

Automatic detection of single-electron regime and virtual gate definition in quantum dots using U-Net and clustering.

To realize practical quantum computers, a large number of quantum bits (qubits) will be required. Semiconductor spin qubits offer advantages such as high scalability and compatibility with existing semiconductor technologies. However, as the number of qubits increases, manual qubit tuning becomes infeasible, motivating automated tuning approaches. In this study, we use U-Net, a neural network method for object detection, to identify charge transition lines in experimental charge stability diagrams. The extracted charge transition lines are analyzed using the Hough transform to determine their
