Nanoparticle delivery enhances the immunomodulatory efficacy of dietary methionine in broiler chickens.

Methionine, an essential sulfur-containing amino acid, is fundamental for humoral immunity through its roles in immunoglobulin synthesis and as a precursor to the intracellular antioxidant glutathione. Enhancing the bioavailability of such key nutrients is a significant goal in nutritional immunology. This study investigated whether nanotechnology could enhance the immunomodulatory effects of methionine by comparing the efficacy and relative bioavailability (RBV) of conventional DL-methionine (DL-Met) with a novel nanoparticle-conjugated methionine (nano-Met) in an avian model. The humoral imm…

Xanthomonas effectors: nutritional hijacking for a long running battle.

Xanthomonas spp. are devastating plant pathogens that cause significant agricultural losses worldwide. Their virulence relies on type III secretion system (T3SS) effectors that manipulate host cells, but the functions of many effectors remain unknown. A recent report demonstrated that the AvrBs2 effector from the rice pathogen Xanthomonas oryzae pv. oryzicola manipulates host metabolism to synthesize a unique metabolite, xanthosan, from host sugars. The bacteria then import and utilize this metabolite via specific transporters. Notably, transgenic rice plants engineered to degrade this metabol

Role of Stress Response Genes in Resistance and Germination of Bacillus subtilis Spores.

Bacterial adaptation to hostile environments depends on the coordinated expression of stress response genes. When adverse conditions persist and nutrients become limiting, sporulating species may initiate sporulation as a last-resort survival strategy. However, sporulation under such conditions may alter the resistance and germination properties of the resulting spores. In this study, we investigated whether stress response regulators that facilitate vegetative cell adaptation to temperature and/or salinity changes during growth can influence the properties of Bacillus subtilis 168 spores. To …

Beyond CO2: Incorporating Bicarbonate, Dynamic Carbon Speciation, and Stoichiometric Plasticity Into Algal Growth Models.

The design of biological carbon capture systems to uptake carbon dioxide by photoautotrophic cultivation of algae has been proposed to mitigate atmospheric carbon emissions. Multiple models to predict algal growth as a function of nutrients have been proposed, but few have delved into the complex dynamic reactions of algal growth as influenced by individual inorganic carbon species. In this work, dynamic algal growth models based on inorganic carbon-limited specific growth rates that considered carbon dioxide (CO2), bicarbonate (HCO3 -) and carbonate (CO3 2-) as potential substrates in Monod m…

Paving the way or sharing goods?-Interactions between pairs of Staphylococcus aureus and Pseudomonas aeruginosa sequentially isolated from respiratory samples of patients on mechanical ventilation.

INTRODUCTION: Bacterial colonization of medical devices is promoting hospital-acquired infections leading to worsening patient outcomes and high costs for society. Sequential bacterial colonization of surfaces may provide altered conditions that benefit pathogens. METHODS: In this study we have investigated the interactions between two pairs of clinical isolates collected from patients that were on mechanical ventilation. Two patients were first colonized by Staphylococcus aureus and thereafter Pseudomonas aeruginosa settled. The two P. aeruginosa isolates were weak colonizers in monoculture.

Thermodynamic Understanding of the Competitive Adsorption of Arsenate and Phosphate on Clay-Fe Oxyhydroxide Complexes.

Minerals such as clay and Fe oxyhydroxides are key in controlling phosphorus (P)-induced nonpoint-source pollution and arsenic (As)-related heavy metalloid contamination, yet understanding their cooperative role in concurrently immobilizing both As and P remains challenging. This study comprehensively investigates the interfacial behavior and thermodynamic mechanisms of competitive As/P adsorption on clay-Fe oxyhydroxide complexes. Batch experiments and characterization revealed that complex formation favors immobilization of both As and P, with a preferential affinity for As over P, highlight

Nutrition beyond the neonatal intensive care unit: Best practices and optimal outcome measures.

Despite advancements in nutritional management during the neonatal intensive care unit hospitalization, preterm infants remain smaller than term-born counterparts at the time of hospital discharge. The goal for nutritional management after discharge from the neonatal intensive care unit is to address ongoing nutrient and growth catch-up requirements and support growth and neurodevelopment while balancing the potential risks of too much growth. The current standard of care approach to post-hospitalization nutrition includes an individualized approach to nutritional supplementation with human mi

A 3D-Printed Vascular-Like Perfusion Tumor-on-a-Chip Recapitulates High-Grade Breast Cancer With in Vivo-Relevant Drug Resistance.

Tumor progression and drug resistance in breast cancer are fundamentally governed by a complex microenvironment, characterized by extreme cell densities and associated nutrient/oxygen gradients. Conventional in vitro models often fail to replicate these features due to mass transport limitations in non-perfused systems. Here, we present a next-generation tumor-on-a-chip platform engineered via high-resolution projection micro-stereolithography (PµSL) to sustain exceptionally high-density breast cancer tissues (up to 400 million cells/mL) under continuous perfusion. By integrating a vascular-in

High Bioavailability Resveratrol Delivery System: A Novel Nutritional Strategy for the Prevention and Alleviation of Rheumatoid Arthritis.

This study aimed to develop an oral solid dispersion nutrient delivery system of resveratrol (RSV) and Eudragit E PO (E PO) for the prevention of rheumatoid arthritis. The RSV-E PO solid dispersion, prepared by the solvent method at a drug-polymer ratio of 1:7 (w/w), turned resveratrol into an amorphous state, as proved by SEM, DSC, XRD, and FTIR. Over 80% of resveratrol was released in vitro, a 13-fold increase compared to raw resveratrol. In male Sprague-Dawley rats, its oral administration (20 mg·kg-1) doubled bioavailability versus unformulated resveratrol. Evaluated in an adjuvant-induced

Ability of Brucella melitensis 16M to Control Nitrogen Process: Identification of a Novel P-II Family Nitrogen Regulator.

Brucella spp. is a bacterium that can survive under conditions of nutrient starvation and is responsible for foodborne illnesses. The OmpR-type transcriptional regulator is characterized by an N-terminal receiver domain and a C-terminal domain, and it plays a regulatory role in diverse physiological processes, notably nitrogen and carbon metabolism. The genome of Brucella melitensis 16M contains genes for multiple OmpR-family regulators. However, the genetic program associated with nitrogen metabolism remains elusive. Herein, it was demonstrated that the B. melitensis 16M ΔftcR mutant, which l

The immunomodulatory role of vitamins in tumor: Mechanisms and therapeutic implications.

The tumor microenvironment (TME)-marked by hypoxia, acidosis, and nutrient scarcity-creates a metabolically restrictive niche that undermines sustained antitumor immunity. Within this niche, infiltrating immune cells could become functionally exhausted to limit the efficacy of existing immunotherapies. Recently, metabolic competition between tumor cells and immune cells for nutrients has attracted great attention in immunometabolism to explain the immune dysfunction. Notably, micronutrients, particularly vitamins, have been increasingly revealed to serve as active immunoregulatory agents rathe…

Perspectives in dementia risk reduction - food for thought.

Diet and specific nutritional factors, alone and in combination with other lifestyle approaches, have an important role in decreasing the risk for dementia. Protective factors for dementia risk reduction are important in early as well as late adult life, since pathological processes underlying dementia begin years before clinical symptoms appear. Decreased levels of nutrients, such as B vitamins and omega-3 fatty acids, exacerbate pathological processes contributing to cognitive impairment. Initial work using specific diets, including the MIND diet (which combines elements of the Mediterranean…

Novel functions of taste-like cells: Organoid-reconstructed sensory interfaces.

BACKGROUND: Endoderm-derived organs, including the gastrointestinal tract, play central roles in nutrient digestion and absorption. They simultaneously function as an "internalized external environment" that continuously interfaces with exogenous substances, thereby constituting a frontline of host defense. Chemosensory cells within the gastrointestinal epithelium, such as enteroendocrine cells and tuft cells, use molecular mechanisms analogous to those of taste reception to detect nutrients and xenobiotic compounds. However, because these populations are sparse, a comprehensive understanding …

Resistance-oriented immunometabolic circuits in laryngeal squamous cell carcinoma: glycolysis-lactate signaling, mitochondrial stress, and tumor-myeloid crosstalk.

Laryngeal squamous cell carcinoma (LSCC) remains clinically challenging because of immune escape and resistance to chemotherapy, radiotherapy, and immune checkpoint blockade. Although immunometabolism encompasses diverse nutrient, redox, and stromal pathways, LSCC-specific evidence is currently strongest for glycolysis/lactate metabolism, mitochondrial remodeling, oxidative stress adaptation, ferroptosis-related regulation, extracellular-vesicle-mediated macrophage remodeling, and checkpoint-associated T-cell dysfunction. This focused review therefore examines resistance-oriented immunometabol

Collagen I promotes cancer cell survival via amino acid import and mTORC1/S6 activation.

Invasive breast and pancreatic cancer cells thrive within a collagen I-rich, poorly perfused extracellular matrix (ECM) network, necessitating robust metabolic adaptation to endure nutrient deficiency, such as glucose starvation. Here we demonstrate that collagen I is critical for the survival and growth of breast and pancreatic cancer cells. Mechanistically, collagen I promotes α2 β1 integrin-dependent S6 phosphorylation by the mammalian target of rapamycin complex 1 (mTORC1) and drives the membrane localisation of the LAT1-4F2hc amino acid transporter. This process ensures a sustained intrac

Updating [Nutritional composition dataset of approved infant formula powder in China (2017-2024)] with [Nutritional composition dataset of approved older infant formula powder in China (2017-2024)].

Older infant formula powder, which can meet some of the nutritional needs of infants aged 6 to 12 months, is suitable for normal older infants. In this context, China has established a stringent registration-based regulatory system for infant formula products, requiring mandatory pre-market approval and comprehensive evaluation of all formulations before commercialization. The primary objective of this dataset was the comparative profiling of nutrient content in domestic and imported older infant formula products. The complete registration dossiers of 786 older infant formula powder from 2017

Biophysical response of the central South China sea to autumn typhoons revealed by tropical storm Nakri.

This study examines the biophysical response of the central South China Sea to autumn typhoons using multi-satellite observations and reanalysis. These typhoons frequently interact with cyclonic eddies (CE), as exemplified by Tropical Storm (TS) Nakri in November 2019, which traversed a CE twice in a 'Looped' path, intensifying it. Nakri induced significant sea surface cooling (maximum of 6.52°C) and a phytoplankton bloom (maximum of 5.61 mg/m3) lasting three weeks. The hybrid coordinate ocean model effectively simulated the upper ocean response, revealing near-inertial oscillations in vertica

Plant-Dominant Low-Protein Diets: A Promising Dietary Strategy for Mitigating Disease Progression in People with Chronic Kidney Disease-A Comprehensive Review.

Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is a global health crisis affecting over 10% of the population, with mortality rates increasing significantly. Current management strategies, including expensive medications and renal replacement therapies, highlight the need for cost-effective, conservative approaches. This review examines the evidence for plant-dominant low-protein diets (PLADO) in managing non-dialysis-dependent CKD. Existing guidelines for protein restriction in CKD vary considerably, with inconsistencies and a lack of personalization noted in the KDOQI and KDIGO recommendations. While traditio

Inorganic carbon enrichment does not increase production of polyunsaturated aldehydes in a pelagic and benthic diatom.

Seasonal upwelling in coastal environments supports high primary production by increasing concentrations of inorganic nutrients in the euphotic zone. Diatoms typically dominate planktonic primary production and community composition during seasonal upwelling, especially in temperate ecosystems. Some diatoms elevate their competitive fitness by producing polyunsaturated aldehydes (PUAs). These phytochemicals act to reduce the fecundity of their grazers by reducing sperm motility, lowering egg production and viability, and delaying embryo development, reducing diatom consumptive pressure. While …
