The microemulsification of coconut oil/polyoxyethylene 2-cetyl ether/2-propanol or ethanol/water was investigated. The phase behaviors of the mixed system were examined. The shear viscosity at different temperatures was measured to derive activation parameters for the viscous flow. The diffusion coefficient of the microemulsions at different compositions was determined by the DLS method. This paper describes a computational model of digestive gland epithelial cells (digestive cells) of marine mussels. These cells are the major environmental interface for uptake of contaminants, particularly those associated with natural particulates that are filtered from seawater by mussels. Digestive cells show well characterised reactions to exposure to lipophilic xenobiotics, such as oil-derived aromatic hydrocarbons (AHs), which accumulate in these cells with minimal biotransformation. In 1979, a mass poisoning involving some 2,000 persons occurred in central Taiwan from cooking oil contaminated by polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and their heat-degraded byproducts, including polychlorinated dibenzofurans (PCDFs). The responsible health department registered cases for clinical purposes between 1979 and 1983. The exposed persons are referred to as the "yucheng" (oil disease) cohort. PCBs and PCDFs are toxic chemicals widely dispersed in the environment and in human tissue, which persist long after exposure. The consequences of exposure to these agents are not well understood.

A field trial in Beel Akbarpur village, Dadri PHC, District Ghaziabad (U.P.) was carried out to test the impact of burning neem oil in kerosene lamp from dusk-to-dawn in living rooms on vector populations and incidence of malaria. Glycogen storage disease type I (GSD-I) is frequently complicated by severe hyperlipoproteinemia and the increased potential risk of premature atherosclerosis. The effects of fish-oil supplementation [MaxEPA, 10 g.(1.73 m2)-1 for 3 mo] were investigated prospectively in seven hyperlipoproteinemic patients with GSD-I. We have studied the skin and nerve fibrosis in toxic oil syndrome by in situ hybridization using specific cDNA probes for types I, III, and IV collagens. Fibroblasts with high levels of type I and III collagen mRNA were observed in biopsies from fibrotic skin areas. Similarly, type IV collagen mRNA was abundant in cells within the fibrotic process of the nerves. These results suggest that the excessive accumulation of collagen in toxic oil syndrome results from transcriptional activation of collagen genes in a subpopulation of fibroblasts.
