Six cases of optic nerve head drusen ophthalmoscopically are reported. Five of these had pathological latencies of the P 100 potentials on VEP examination. Only three of the patients had subjective visual complaints; all six, however, had variable visual field defects. Optic nerve head drusen are an important differential diagnosis, which can be readily established especially in those younger patients who need neurological and ophthalmological examination because of visual disturbances and pathological VEP responses.

A series of 17 patients with ocular cicatricial pemphigoid (OCP) is described retrospectively. The importance of early recognition, especially of disease involving the medial canthus and caruncular region, diagnosis by biopsy, and adequate immunosuppressive and surgical therapy, are emphasised. A detailed grading scheme has been developed and this has enabled the authors to determine the success or failure of the therapy during the active treatment period. A combined ophthalmological and immunological approach to treatment can result in a successful visual outcome of this potentially blinding

A Navy helicopter pilot was found to have a suprasellar mass during evaluation for primary infertility and mildly elevated prolactin level. Extensive evaluation revealed no other abnormalities. After 1 year of followup without radiographic tumor enlargement, he was returned to flying duties with continuing medical monitoring. Aeromedical considerations for tumors in the juxtasellar region are reviewed, including neuroendocrine disorders, neuro-ophthalmologic defects, and neurological impairment. The impact of improved diagnostic capabilities on aeromedical disposition is discussed.

2 brothers of a genetically healthy family were born with multiple identical malformations and died at the age of 11 and 15 years. Clinically they presented hydrocephalus with convulsions, spastic dysplegia and blindness. Ophthalmologic investigations revealed one macrophthalmic eye with retinal malformations and deeply pigmented, partly occluded choroid, abnormal scleral pigmentation and optic atrophy. The other small eye showed meso- and ectodermal dysgenesis of the anterior segment and total retinal detachment as well as optic dysplasia. The brain was remarkably abnormal as well.

Vitreous cylinders, a rarely discussed ophthalmologic entity, were studied in two clinical cases and in five enucleated eyes. The cylinders were found in four cases of ocular toxoplasmosis, one case of vitreous hemorrhage complicating a malignant melanoma, and one case of pars planitis and one of uveitis, both of unknown causes. Results of scanning electron microscopy in one specimen suggested that cylinders are formed by condensation of vitreous collagen fibers. We emphasize the nonspecific nature of this interesting vitreous finding.

Among 638 patients with fractures of the middle third of the facial skeleton 139 were found to have clinically relevant fractures of the orbital floor. 74 of them were followed up ophthalmologically and by x-ray examination. In 49 patients the results of the operative treatment were judged from a detailed questionnaire. Operation within 2 weeks after the accident yielded better results than later operation. Persisting motility disturbances concerned mainly the upper field of gaze.

Out of 29 patients who presented with failing vision in one eye due to optic nerve or chiasmal compression, compression was initially diagnosed in only five. The errors in diagnosis and lack of ophthalmological follow-up led to delays of up to many years with serious deterioration in acuity before referral for intracranial investigation. The chief causes of error were lack of charting of the visual fields, too ready acceptance of the diagnosis of the neuritis in the absence of essential features, and the infrequent use of skull radiographs.

Sturge-Weber Syndrome (SWS) is a rare neurocutaneous disorder characterized by the presence of port-wine stains (PWS) and ophthalmologic complications, including glaucoma and choroidal hemangiomas. These manifestations result from somatic mutations in the GNAQ gene, leading to vascular malformations that affect both the skin and ocular tissues. This review aims to evaluate the impact of laser treatment for PWS on ocular manifestations in SWS, considering both clinical outcomes and underlying biological mechanisms. PWS are common in SWS patients and significantly impair quality of life (QoL) an

Pituitary apoplexy (PA) is a rare but potentially life-threatening endocrine emergency caused by sudden hemorrhage or infarction usually within a pituitary tumor. Clinical presentation is highly variable, ranging from isolated headache to severe visual loss or altered consciousness. Prompt recognition, multidisciplinary evaluation, and timely management are essential to improve outcomes. Recent prospective and real-world studies have challenged the traditional view that urgent surgery is always required. Conservative management has been proposed to be a safe and effective option, although comp

BACKGROUND: Cardiac surgery with cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB) is associated with microcirculatory changes. Little is known about the effect of CPB on the structural and vascular parameters of the retina. We aimed to investigate changes in these parameters in patients after CPB surgery.
METHODS: In this prospective observational clinical trial, 44 patients who underwent elective CPB surgery were enrolled. All subjects underwent a complete ophthalmological examination, optical coherence tomography (OCT), and OCT angiography (OCTA) preoperatively and 1 week after surgery. Changes in macular reti

INTRODUCTION: Both ophthalmic and retinal artery occlusion and caudate nucleus infarction are forms of arterial ischemic stroke, which are rare in adolescents. The causal relationship between these two events is still unclear.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 17-year-old Han Chinese boy presented with vision loss in his left eye for 24 h and was diagnosed with ophthalmic and retinal artery occlusion. The ophthalmologic examination showed no light perception and no pupil light reflex. The fundus examination revealed a cherry-red spot at the macula with white ischemic retina and optic disc. Intra-arterial

BACKGROUND Vogt-Koyanagi-Harada (VKH) disease is a rare autoimmune disorder targeting melanocyte-rich tissues that often presents with bilateral ocular inflammation and multisystem involvement. Early manifestations, such as headache and optic disc edema, can mimic other conditions, leading to diagnostic delays. Clinician awareness is essential, particularly in high-risk populations, to ensure timely intervention. CASE REPORT We report the case of a 55-year-old Indian man who presented with a 20-day history of progressive bilateral visual loss, headache, and hearing impairment. Ophthalmologic e

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: Pyogenic liver abscess (PLA) has traditionally been considered prevalent in Asia. However, its incidence is increasing in Europe. Klebsiella pneumoniae (Kp) has emerged as the leading causative pathogen, and hypervirulent strains pose a higher risk of invasive disease and metastatic complications, such as endogenous endophthalmitis (EE).
CASE PRESENTATION: The case describes a 77-year-old woman who presented with fever and right upper quadrant abdominal pain. She was diagnosed with a second episode of PLA within 3 months, caused by Kp. Despite prompt antimicrobial

Adult Refsum disease (ARD; OMIM 266510) is a degenerative autosomal recessive condition typically diagnosed in adulthood. It affects visual, auditory and nervous system function. It is characterised by plasma, neuro-ophthalmological and adipose tissue accumulation of the dietary-derived phytanic acid (PA). This guidance reviews the clinical aspects of ARD and discusses interventions to address various co-morbidities of the disease. This GRADE-aligned guidance is based on a review of the literature and a consensus statement reflecting the conclusions of professionals with experience in the diag

BACKGROUND: Amaurosis fugax is a classic clinical presentation of carotid arterial embolism. Amaurosis results from ischemia to the retinal tissue, is vision threatening, and an ophthalmological emergency. Stenoses isolated within the distal arteries supplying the retina (including the ophthalmic artery) are likely underdiagnosed during the workup of amaurosis, as evaluation is typically focused on carotid artery disease resulting in embolic events. Isolated stenosis of the ophthalmic artery may also be underrecognized by clinicians, as its discussion appears limited to case reports within the

BACKGROUND: Bacterial endogenous endophthalmitis (BEE) represents a rare but severe ophthalmological emergency which caused by hematogenous spread of bacterial infection. As its characteristics of insidious onset and rapid progression, BEE may lead to vision loss or even enucleation without immediate treatments. In recent years, with increasing numbers of immunosuppression and prevalence of resistant strains, incidence of BEE has risen, and its diagnosis and treatment face new challenges. CASE PRESENTATION: A 15-year-old female patient was admitted to department of ophthalmology due to blurred…

Primary central nervous system lymphoma (PCNSL) is a rare extranodal lymphoma most commonly involving the brain and leptomeninges. While high-dose methotrexate (HD-MTX)-based therapy has improved outcomes, relapse remains common and typically occurs within the CNS. Isolated ocular relapse after prolonged CNS remission is uncommon and diagnostically challenging. We report the case of a 78-year-old woman diagnosed in 2020 with PCSNL presenting with subacute constitutional and neurologic symptoms found to have a right frontal periventricular mass. She achieved complete radiographic remission foll

Optical coherence tomography (OCT) is a modern imaging technology crucial for diagnosing retinal diseases by providing high-resolution, non-invasive images of biological tissues. Despite the widespread use of rabbits in ophthalmological research due to their anatomical similarities to the human eye, comprehensive data on normal retinal thickness in rabbits using OCT is limited. This study was conducted with the objective of measuring retinal thickness in rabbits using an OCT device specifically designed for their eyes. The study included 42 rabbits grouped according to age (3-6 and 12 months)

Targeted cancer therapies have transformed the landscape of cancer treatments but are often associated with off-target adverse drug reactions due to overlapping molecular pathways in healthy tissues, including those in the eye. Fibroblast growth factor receptors (FGFRs), expressed across various parts of the eye, can become unintended targets of FGFR inhibitors such as erdafitinib, infigratinib, and pemigatinib, leading to ocular adverse events (AEs) affecting the ocular surface and retina. AEs across clinical trials are graded using the National Cancer Institute (NCI) Common Terminology Crite
