The directed growth of retinal axons towards surgically transposed tecta in Xenopus; an examination of homing behaviour by retinal ganglion cell axons.

The growth of optic axons towards experimentally rotated tecta has been studied. In stage 24/25 embryos, a piece of the dorsal neural tube, containing the dorsal midbrain rudiment, was rotated through 180 degrees. At later stages of development, the pathways of growing optic axons were investigated by labelling with either horseradish peroxidase or fluorescent dye. An enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) for the diagnosis of Leptospira interrogans serovar hardjo (hardjo) infection in cattle was compared with the microscopic agglutination test (MAT). Glutardialdehyde was used in the ELISA to couple sonicated hardjo antigen to the microtiter plate. Mouse monoclonal anti-bovine IgG1 coupled to peroxidase was used as conjugate. Routinely paraffin-embedded sections of dysplasia, carcinoma in situ (CIS) and invasive (squamous) carcinoma of the cervix were studied to determine the participation of human papilloma virus (HPV) in these tissues. Morphological observation (1,059 cases) revealed condylomatous changes to reach 54% in dysplasia, 25% in CIS and 25% in invasive carcinoma. This study used anterograde transport of horseradish peroxidase to identify primary projections of the anterior and posterior lateral line nerves in the oyster toadfish, Opsanus tau. Both lateralis nerves project to the nucleus medialis and nucleus caudalis, which comprise a continuous lateralis cell column. Spread of herpes simplex virus to and within the mouse eye after inoculation of the cornea or the skin of the snout was examined by peroxidase-antiperoxidase (PAP) staining of viral antigen in flat mounts of the eye and by isolation of virus from nervous tissue. Lymphocyte phenotypes were identified by monoclonal antibodies and avidin-biotin peroxidase reagents and enumerated in tumor tissue removed from 26 patients with head and neck cancer. T lymphocytes (T11) were the predominate phenotype at the tumor margin, with twice as many helper/inducer (T4) as suppressor/cytotoxic (T8) lymphocytes.
