How Social Environment Shapes Pre-Death Grief Experiences in Dementia Caregiving: A Qualitative Study.

Caregivers of persons living with dementia experience significant losses as they witness the progressive cognitive decline and personality changes of their loved ones while managing substantial caregiving responsibilities. This results in pre-death grief, which is a multifaceted response to the losses experienced. Although pre-death grief is traditionally conceptualized as an intrapersonal and dyadic phenomenon, this study examines how social environments shape caregivers' grief experiences. Through semi-structured interviews with 33 dementia caregivers in Singapore, we identified 11 distinct

Dimensions of perfectionism in subtypes of anorexia nervosa, atypical anorexia nervosa, and bulimia nervosa.

OBJECTIVE: Perfectionism is implicated in the development and maintenance of eating disorders (EDs), yet its dimensions across ED diagnoses and behavioral presentations remain underexplored. METHOD: This study examined differences in Personal Standards and Concern Over Mistakes, two subscales of the Frost Multidimensional Perfectionism Scale, among individuals with anorexia nervosa (AN), atypical anorexia nervosa (AAN), and bulimia nervosa (BN) and between restricting and binge-eating/purging behavioral presentations. Participants included 546 individuals (Mage = 30.1, 97 % female) meeting DS

Perspective matters in recovery: the views of persons with severe mental illness, family and mental health professionals on collaboration during recovery, a qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: Recovery from severe mental illness, including psychosis has been described as a personal and unique process, but it rarely is a journey undertaken without profound influences of significant others (family, mental health professionals). Diverging perspectives between persons with severe mental illness, family and professionals are frequent during the recovery process, notably in psychotic disorders. We aimed to explore processes of collaboration during recovery, to inform recovery supporting practices. METHODS: Current qualitative study had a participatory design and was set withi

"This is you teaching you:" Exploring providers' perspectives on experiential learning and enhancing patient safety and outcomes in ketamine-assisted therapy.

OBJECTIVES: This study explores therapists' perspectives on experiential learning, competencies, and training in ketamine-assisted therapy (KAT), a form of psychedelic-assisted therapy (PAT). We aim to understand how therapists' personal psychedelic experiences influence their self-perceived competency and therapeutic relationships regarding KAT. METHODS: Licensed therapists from Numinus Wellness clinics in Canada and the USA who were trained in KAT were invited to participate in the study. Participation included a 60-90-minute semi-structured interview conducted remotely via secure videoconf

Abdominal Body Composition Reference Ranges and Association With Chronic Conditions in an Age- and Sex-Stratified Representative Sample of a Geographically Defined American Population.

BACKGROUND: Body composition can be accurately quantified from abdominal computed tomography (CT) exams and is a predictor for the development of aging-related conditions and for mortality. However, reference ranges for CT-derived body composition measures of obesity, sarcopenia, and bone loss have yet to be defined in the general population. METHODS: We identified a population-representative sample of 4 900 persons aged 20 to 89 years who underwent an abdominal CT exam from 2010 to 2020. The sample was constructed using propensity score matching an age and sex stratified sample of persons re

The Association Between Sleep Disturbances and Perceived Stress in Substance Use Disorder Treatment.

Abstract. Introduction: Sleep disturbances and elevated stress levels are commonly reported among individuals seeking treatment for substance use disorders (SUDs). However, it remains unclear whether the relationship between sleep and stress differs based on the primary substance of use or if there are commonalities across different substances. This study aimed to investigate the association between sleep disturbances and perceived stress among individuals in SUD treatment and examine whether primary substance influences this relationship. Method: A sample of 4,201 individuals from 59 SUD trea

The Function of Sleep and the Treatment of Primary Insomnia.

BACKGROUND: Good sleep is correlated with health. Primary insomnia is a common reason for consulting a primary care physician. It is usually treated with drugs despite clear evidence for the efficacy of behavioral therapy. METHODS: We conducted a selective search of PubMed for German- and English-language reviews of the past decade that deal with the function and regulation of sleep in healthy individuals and/or the mechanism of action of currently used drugs and behavioral therapy. RESULTS: The important functions of sleep include cleaning processes such as the elimination of metabolic prod

Telehealth improves follow-up and monitoring of age-related macular degeneration during the COVID-19 pandemic.

PURPOSE: To prevent vision loss, it is important to monitor patients with age-related macular degeneration (AMD) for the development of choroidal neovascularization. The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic caused many patients to miss or delay visits. To offset those gaps in care, providers utilized telehealth (TH) to evaluate patients for symptoms of disease progression and provide health education on the importance of continuous monitoring. METHODS: This study evaluates the impact of TH encounters on the rate of return for recommended in-person examinations for 1103 patients with n

The effects and challenges of alcohol use disorder peer support service in South Korea: A focus group study.

Although alcohol use disorder (AUD) is associated with a high disease burden due to medical consequences, people with AUD often do not receive appropriate treatment or community health service support. Peer-support services, intended to bridge the gap between patients with AUD and mental health providers have produced successful results. However, the number of studies on peer supporters in South Korea, especially those with AUD, is limited. Therefore, research on the effectiveness or challenges faced by AUD peer supporters in Korea is required to meet the challenges posed by increases in the n

Personality Predictors of Prejudicial Attitudes, Willingness to Engage, and Actual Engagement in Consensual Non-Monogamy.

Personality variables, including sensation-seeking, interpersonal trust, avoidance of uncertainty, endorsement of social conformity, and love styles (Ludus, Eros, Pragma, Storge, Mania, and Agape), were examined as predictors of prejudicial attitudes toward individuals who practice polyamory and personal interest in engaging in consensual non-monogamy (CNM) among 1831 participants who completed anonymous surveys online. Personality characteristics were also compared between individuals who currently practice CNM (n = 67) and case-matched controls involved in monogamous relationships. As predic

Co-rumination across in-person and digital communication: Associations with affect and relationship closeness in adolescents.

INTRODUCTION: Despite the prominence of interpersonal emotion regulation, particularly during adolescence, it is a relatively understudied area of investigation. Co-rumination is an interpersonal emotion regulation strategy that is frequently used by adolescents. Traditional examinations of co-rumination have focused on its occurrence in person, while largely overlooking digital modes of communication. This study was the first to investigate adolescents' co-rumination across multiple communication modalities (i.e., in person, text, social media, phone) and its downstream association with affec

Individual differences in amygdala volumes predict changes in functional connectivity between subcortical and cognitive control networks throughout adolescence.

Adolescence is a critical period of structural and functional neural maturation among regions serving the cognitive control of emotion. Evidence suggests that this process is guided by developmental changes in amygdala and striatum structure and shifts in functional connectivity between subcortical (SC) and cognitive control (CC) networks. Herein, we investigate the extent to which such developmental shifts in structure and function reciprocally predict one another over time. 179 youth (9-15 years-old) completed annual MRI scans for three years. Amygdala and striatum volumes and connectivity w

Characterization and Quantitation of Personal Exposures to Epoxy Paints in Construction Using a Combination of Novel Personal Samplers and Analytical Techniques: CIP-10MI, Liquid Chromatography-Tandem Mass Spectrometry and Ion Chromatography.

Epoxy resins are extremely versatile products that are widely used in construction for coatings, adhesives, primers, and sealers. Occupational exposures to epoxies cause allergic contact dermatitis, occupational asthma, hypersensitivity pneumonitis (epoxy-resin lung) and acute decline in lung function. Despite these health concerns, there is a striking paucity of quantitative exposure data to epoxy resins in construction. The lack of practical analytical methods and suitable personal samplers for monitoring of reactive two-component epoxide systems in real-world applications has been an unmet

ESMvis: a tool for visualizing individual Experience Sampling Method (ESM) data.

PURPOSE: The experience sampling method (ESM) is used for intensive longitudinal time-series data collection during normal daily life. ESM data give information on momentary affect, activities and (social) context of, for example, patients suffering from mental disorders, and allows for person-specific feedback reports. However, current personalized feedback reports only display a selection of measured variables, and typically involve only summary statistics, thus not reflecting the dynamic fluctuations in affect and its influencing factors. To address this shortcoming, we developed a tool for

A Bad Start: The Combined Effects of Early Onset Substance Use and ADHD and CD on Criminality Patterns, Substance Abuse and Psychiatric Comorbidity among Young Violent Offenders.

Substance abuse, conduct disorder (CD) and attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) are all known risk factors for developing aggressive behaviors, criminality, other psychiatric comorbidity and substance use disorders (SUD). Since early age of onset is important for aggravating the impact of several of these risk factors, the aim of the present study was to investigate whether young adult violent offenders with different patterns of early onset externalizing problems (here: substance use < age 15, ADHD, CD) had resulted in different criminality profiles, substance use problem profiles

Lingual Pressure Dysfunction Contributes to Reduced Swallowing-Related Quality of Life in Parkinson's Disease.

Purpose Dysphagia in Parkinson's disease (PD) is a major cause of depression and reduced quality of life (QOL). PD-related dysphagia often involves lingual dysfunction and weak pressure generation. The relation of disordered lingual pressure generation to swallowing-related QOL in persons with PD remains unknown. Method Twenty-four persons with idiopathic PD completed the Swallowing Quality of Life (SWAL-QOL) questionnaire and an evaluation of anterior and posterior tongue strength. Peak pressures were compared to age- and sex-matched controls. The magnitude of and latency to peak pressure wer
