Attitudes toward transsexualism in a Swedish national survey.

A general inventory of the views on sex reassignment and attitudes toward transsexuals in Sweden was attempted. Whether the view on these matters differ between people embracing biological theories in explanation of transsexualism and those embracing psychological theories was tested. Third, whether men and the older age groups hold a different view on transsexualism than women and younger age groups was investigated. For these purposes, in October-December 1998, a questionnaire was mailed to a randomly selected national sample of 992 Swedish residents; 668 persons returned the questionnaire,

The power of virtual integration: an interview with Dell Computer's Michael Dell. Interview by Joan Magretta.

Michael Dell started his computer company in 1984 with a simple business insight. He could bypass the dealer channel through which personal computers were then being sold and sell directly to customers, building products to order. Dell's direct model eliminated the dealer's markup and the risks associated with carrying large inventories of finished goods. In this interview, Michael Dell provides a detailed description of how his company is pushing that business model one step further, toward what he calls virtual integration. Dell is using technology and information to blur the traditional bou

Psychological correlates of frequency and type of drug use among jail inmates.

The comorbidity of drug abuse and various forms of psychopathology is pervasive and well documented. In particular, the incidence of depression, anxiety, and antisocial personality disorder is high among substance abusers relative to non-drug abusers. Offender populations have a high rate of substance abuse, and some studies suggest that the incidence of psychopathology may be even greater than in other drug using groups. In order to identify specific types of psychopathology as they relate to drug preferences and frequency of use among drug-using offenders, arrestees at the Baltimore City Det

Strategies to recruit plateletpheresis donors from a registry of HLA-typed, unrelated, bone marrow donors.

Rising demand for single-donor platelet components--from random donors, to maintain platelet inventories, or from HLA-compatible donors, to support alloimmune platelet-refractory patients--necessitated increasing the size of a community plateletpheresis donor registry. This study compares two strategies for recruiting whole-blood donors into a plateletpheresis program. The whole-blood donors who were asked to participate in this study had recently joined an unrelated bone marrow donor registry and had been HLA-typed as part of that process. An in-person recruitment strategy, which was time-int

A single center cross-sectional study examining the prevalence of inpatient postpartum anxiety and post-traumatic stress symptoms using the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory and Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder Checklist for DSM-5.

BACKGROUND: Mental health conditions are now the leading cause of maternal mortality in the United States, prompting calls for universal postpartum anxiety and post-traumatic stress disorder screening. However, standardized guidelines for screening implementation remain deficient. This cross-sectional study evaluated the prevalence of inpatient postpartum anxiety and post-traumatic stress disorder while exploring associated risk factors. OBJECTIVES: Over a three-week period, we prospectively assessed adult postpartum patients following all delivery modes (vaginal and cesarean, live and stillb

Exploring the Impact of Digital Health Tools in Enhancing Quality of Life and Psychological Adjustment in Long-term Blood Donors: A Cross-Sectional Study.

BACKGROUND: Blood donation plays a critical role in public health, yet long-term donors (donating at least twice per year, for at least three years) often face challenges related to psychological adjustment and quality of life. Digital health tools could offer innovative solutions to address these issues by providing personalized support, tracking, and mental health interventions. AIM: This study investigates the impact of digital health tools on the quality of life (QoL) and psychological adjustment of long-term blood donors in Saudi Arabia, with attention to demographic factors influencing

Determinants of Psychomotor Slowing in Older Adults With Depressive Disorder.

BACKGROUND: Psychomotor slowing in older adults with depressive disorder (DD) has been associated with a poor prognosis. Whether psychomotor slowing is associated with depression itself, age-related physical and cognitive factors, or both, is important to personalize treatments. We examined the unique contributions of different determinants of psychomotor slowing in older adults with DD. METHODS: Baseline data of the Routine-Outcome-Monitoring for Geriatric Psychiatry and Science (ROM-GPS) study, and the Netherlands Study of Depression in Older persons (NESDO) were used to include a total of

Measured and perceived food environment influences on women's nutritional health in marginalized areas of northern Mexico: a structural equation modeling analysis.

BACKGROUND: Obesity is a growing global public health problem and a risk factor for developing non-communicable diseases (NCDs). The food environment is crucial in shaping nutritional behaviors and health outcomes. However, how food environment indicators interrelate and impact the population's health in middle- and low-income countries is unclear. This study examined the association between the food environment and indicators of obesity and NCDs in adult women from medium and high-marginalization areas in Hermosillo, Northwest Mexico. METHODS: A randomized sample of 104 adult women and 80 fo

Who Is Afraid of Romantic Relationships? Relationship Fears and Their Connection with Personal Values and Socio-Demographic Variables.

This study investigates the fears of romantic relationships. Based on Schwartz's theory of values, we built a comprehensive inventory of the fears that young people seeking romantic relationships may experience. We tested the fears' structure and the connections with personal values and socio-demographic variables. The study was conducted in Israel using a community sample of young Jews and Palestinians without romantic partners (n = 1083, 57% female, age 18-30). We discovered ten basic fears clustered into three groups (concerns). The ineptitude concern combines two fears: failing one's partn
