Evidence of abnormal amygdala functioning in borderline personality disorder: a functional MRI study.

BACKGROUND: Intense and rapidly changing mood states are a major feature of borderline personality disorder (BPD); however, there have only been a few studies investigating affective processing in BPD, and in particular no neurofunctional correlates of abnormal emotional processing have been identified so far. METHODS: Six female BPD patients without additional major psychiatric disorder and six age-matched female control subjects underwent functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) to measure regional cerebral hemodynamic changes following brain activity when viewing 12 standardized emotio

The Ego Impairment Index and schizophrenia: a validation study.

This study is an extension of our work on a new scale, the Ego Impairment Index (EII; Perry & Viglione, 1991). The index is theoretically based on Beres's (1956) model of ego assessment and was empirically developed on a sample of melancholic, depressed outpatients, diagnosed according to the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (3rd ed. [DSM-III]; American Psychiatric Association, 1980). The EII is derived from the Rorschach Inkblot Test and offers a single composite score of ego impairment. This study validates the use of the EII with a heterogeneous sample of schizophrenic

Risk. Impact of having a first-degree relative with affective disorder: a 7-year follow-up study.

This study investigated a high-risk sample in order to elucidate risk factors for affective disorder. Healthy monozygotic (MZ) and dizygotic (DZ) twins with and without a co-twin with a history of affective disorder were identified through nationwide registers. Two risk groups were identified: the high-risk group comprised twins at risk of developing affective disorder (DZ or MZ twin; index co-twin affected); the low risk group (control group) comprised twins at low risk of developing affective disorder (DZ or MZ twin; index co-twin not affected). At baseline 234 participants were divided into

[Delusional disorder of the paranoid type and unruptured intracerebral aneurysm--is there an association?].

INTRODUCTION: Contrary to ruptured intracerebral aneurysm, according to our knowledge, not many papers have been published dealing with the relation of psychic/neuropsychological symptoms and unruptured intracerebral aneurysm (UIA). As to our knowledge, there is no published paper relating delusional disorder, paranoid type (DD-PT) and UIA, which can have important clinical implication. AIM, METHOD AND RESULTS: We describe a case of a woman who had DD-PT and UIA. The patient in her fifties, a typist with elementary school education, presented to the psychiatrist with the symptoms of irritabil

PRISM-5 update: Adaptation and validation of the Spanish version interview for dual diagnosis assessment based on DSM-5 criteria.

INTRODUCTION: Diagnosing individuals with co-occurring substance use and other mental disorders (SUDs and MDs) is challenging due to overlapping symptoms and masking effects. Semi-structured interviews, like the Psychiatric Research Interview for Substance and Mental Disorders (PRISM), are essential for diagnostic accuracy. This study aims to update and validate the Spanish PRISM-IV to DSM-5 criteria, providing evidence of reliability based on its ability to assess Dual Disorders (DDs). MATERIAL AND METHODS: The PRISM-5 was translated and culturally adapted to Spanish to ensure equivalence wi

Enhanced switching and familial susceptibility for psychosis.

INTRODUCTION: Working Memory and Task-Switching are essential components of cognitive control, which underlies many symptoms evident across multiple neuropsychiatric disorders, including psychotic and mood disorders. Vulnerability to these disorders has a substantial genetic component, suggesting that clinically unaffected first-degree relatives may carry some vulnerability-related traits. Converging evidence from animal and human studies demonstrates that dopamine transmission, striatal and frontal brain regions, and attention and switching behaviors are essential components of a multilevel c

Concurrent validity of cocaine and sedative dependence diagnoses in opioid-dependent outpatients.

The present study evaluated the relationship between diagnoses of cocaine and sedative dependence and drug use early in treatment among opioid-dependent patients in methadone substitution therapy. New admissions (n = 138) were assessed via the Structured Clinical Interview for the DSM III-R (SCID) for presence of Axis I and Axis II disorders and followed for five weeks on standard methadone maintenance. Patients submitted urines three times per week tested for opioids, cocaine, and benzodiazepines. Patients diagnosed with current cocaine dependence (n = 90) submitted a higher proportion of coc

Emotional stimulated speech-based assisted early diagnosis of depressive disorders using personality-enhanced deep learning.

BACKGROUND: Early diagnosis of depression is crucial, and speech-based early diagnosis of depression is promising, but insufficient data and lack of theoretical support make it difficult to be applied. Therefore, it is valuable to combine psychiatric theories, collect speech recognition data for depression, and develop a practicable recognition method for depression. METHODS: In this study, 24 patients with major depressive disorders (MDDs) and 36 healthy controls (HCs) were recruited to participate in a multi-task speech experiment. Descriptive statistics and tests of variance were used to a

Restlessness and an Increased Urge to Move (Drive for Activity) in Anorexia Nervosa May Strengthen Personal Motivation to Maintain Caloric Restriction and May Augment Body Awareness and Proprioception: A Lesson From Leptin Administration in Anorexia Nervosa.

Anorexia nervosa (AN), a disorder of voluntary food restriction leading to severe weight loss in female adolescents, remains an enigma. In particular, the appropriation of the starved thin body into the self-concept in AN is a process insufficiently researched and still poorly understood. Healthy humans undergoing starvation experience a slowing of movements and avoid voluntary exercise. By contrast, AN tends to be not infrequently associated with voluntary, sometimes excessive and/or compulsive exercise. Such deliberate exercise, not reported in starvation, seems to be facilitated by an incre

Personality Traits, Affective Distress, and Addictive Behaviors in Patients with Neurotic Disorders: A Mediation Analysis.

This study investigated an integrative mediation model examining whether anxiety and depression mediate the relationship between the Big Five personality traits and the severity of alcohol and nicotine dependence among psychiatric patients with neurotic disorders (ICD-10 codes F40-F48). A cross-sectional design was conducted on a clinical sample of 232 patients (57.3 female; mean age = 48.58, SD = 10.77) using standardized instruments: Big Five Inventory (BFI-44), Fagerström Test for Nicotine Dependence (FTND), Michigan Alcoholism Screening Test (MAST), and Depression, Anxiety, and Stress Scal

Personality Disorder Diagnoses in Outpatient Forensic Mental Health: A Comprehensive Prevalence Study in the Netherlands.

Personality disorders (PDs) are associated with significant clinical and societal consequences and are highly comorbid with other psychiatric conditions. In forensic mental health settings, PD diagnoses are particularly relevant because they are linked to antisocial behavior, recidivism risk, and specific treatment needs. However, empirical knowledge about the prevalence of PD diagnoses in outpatient forensic mental health (OFMH) care is limited. We aimed to conduct a comprehensive study of the prevalence of PD diagnoses in OFMH institutions and to describe the demographic, clinical, and legal

Cumulative trauma and other determinants of post-traumatic stress disorder, anxiety and depression in medical students following the Great Anatolian earthquake in Turkey.

BACKGROUND: Following the 2023 Turkey earthquake, university students in the earthquake district were transferred to other universities and our university was one of those. In addition, the families of many of our students were living in the earthquake district, and they were with their families during the earthquake due to the semester. We created a trauma psychiatry policlinic to serve medical students and others affected by the disaster. To identify students affected and to provide support, we conducted a cross-sectional study on medical students two months after the earthquake. We aimed to

Psychopathic personality traits stress immunity and social potency moderate the relationship between emotional competence and cognitive functions in depression.

BACKGROUND: Psychopathic personality traits (PPT) and depression have both been shown to worsen emotional and cognitive functions. Moreover, PPT and depression share similar underlying neuronal circuits tapping into the emotional and cognitive domains. However, little is known about the influence of PPT on emotion and cognition in individuals with depression. OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to examine the correlative relationships and moderating role of PPT in the association between emotional competence and cognitive functions in individuals with depression. METHODS: Data from 373 individuals

Self-management with alcohol over lifespan: psychological mechanisms, neurobiological underpinnings, and risk assessment.

Self-management includes all behavioural measures and cognitive activities aimed at coping with challenges arising throughout the lifespan. While virtually all of these challenges can be met without pharmacological means, alcohol consumption has long been instrumentalized as a supporting tool to help coping with problems arising selectively at adolescence, adulthood, and ageing. Here, we present, to our knowledge, the first systematic review of alcohol instrumentalization throughout lifespan. We searched MEDLINE, Google Scholar, PsycINFO and CINAHL (from Jan, 1990, to Dec, 2022) and analysed c

Childhood Victimization and Neuroticism Mediate the Effects of Childhood Abuse on Adulthood Depressive Symptoms in Volunteers.

BACKGROUND: When assessing patients with depressive and anxiety disorders in psychiatric clinical practice, it is common to encounter children and adolescents who have experienced abuse and victimization. To date, it has been clarified that experiences of "childhood abuse" and "childhood victimization" lead to "neuroticism", and that neuroticism leads to "adult depressive symptoms". In this study, we analyzed how these four factors are interrelated. SUBJECTS AND METHODS: The following self-administered questionnaire surveys were conducted in 576 adult volunteers: Patient Health Questionnaire-

Mood variations and personality traits in patients with epilepsy over the course of their menstrual cycle.

INTRODUCTION: The incidence of mood disorders and psychopathology is more frequent in patients with epilepsy (PWE) than in the general population. Also, it has been reported that PWE suffer more seizures during certain phases of their menstrual cycle (MC). Still, limited information exists regarding the relationship between the physical and emotional changes during the MC in PWE. Therefore, in this study, we aimed to evaluate the mood and personality traits of PWE during their MC and to compare them with controls. METHODS: A cohort of 22 PWE and nine controls was gathered. All the participant

The neural correlates of thought-action fusion in healthy adults: A functional magnetic resonance imaging study.

BACKGROUND: Thought-action fusion (TAF) represents an individual's belief that a thought is like action. Inflated TAF has been considered a central mechanism for developing obsessive thoughts. However, the neural mechanisms underlying TAF are yet unknown. METHODS: We recruited 32 healthy men to participate in a functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) study. Whereas inside the 3T MRI scanner, participants were asked to read negative statements describing the expectation of bad events associated with close persons (CPs condition) or neutral persons (NPs condition). They also completed the

Peripheral trauma and risk of dystonia: What are the evidences and potential co-risk factors from a population insurance database?

BACKGROUND: Dystonia is a neurological syndrome typically resulting in abnormal postures. OBJECTIVES: We tested the role of physical injury as potential risk factor for development of dystonia using The National Health Insurance Research Database of Taiwan. METHODS: We identified 65704 people who were coded in the database as having had peripheral traumatic injuries (ICD-9-CM 807-848 and 860-959) in the year 2000. Patients with traumatic brain or spine injuries were excluded from analysis. We matched them using purposive sampling with 65704 people in the database who had not suffered periphe

Pathological gambling in Parkinson's disease. A comprehensive review.

Pathological gambling (PG) and other Impulse Control Disorders (ICDs), such as hypersexuality, compulsive eating and buying, are often reported in Parkinson's disease (PD). The prevalence of PG is 2.2%-7% in treated PD patients, which is higher than the background population rate. As other non motor symptoms in PD, PG is frequently under-reported by patients and caregivers and may be under-recognized by the treating physicians. Factors associated with PG include male sex, younger age or younger age at PD onset, personal or family history of substance abuse or ICD, a personality profile charact
