PURPOSE: Chemotherapy is the standard treatment in advanced Hodgkin's lymphoma and a therapeutic alternative for early stages. Although polychemotherapy with doxorubicin, bleomycin, vinblastine, and dacarbazine (ABVD) is equivalent or superior to mechloretamine, vincristine, procarbazine, and prednisone (MOPP) in advanced disease, no series have been published using ABVD without associated radiotherapy in early stages. We report the results obtained with the administration of six cycles of ABVD alone in clinical stage I and II disease.

BACKGROUND: We compared the accuracy of endoscopic ultrasonography (EUS) for staging depth of invasion of early gastric cancer with that of conventional endoscopy.

OBJECTIVE: To describe the routine care of women during normal labour and delivery, and the immediate care of newborn babies in Zambia at different levels of health care.
DESIGN: A descriptive survey carried out between July 1994 and January 1995.
SETTING: Eleven maternity facilities, one University teaching hospital, two urban health centres and eight rural hospitals in one province in Zambia.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Desmopressin is the treatment of choice for patients with von Willebrand's disease and mild hemophilia A. This compound is also useful in other congenital and acquired disorders of hemostasis, reducing the need for blood derivatives with the inherent risks of infections and alloimmunization. This study examined a new method of providing brief, individual lifestyle modification to obese individuals treated by pharmacotherapy. Twenty-six women with a mean (+/- SD) age of 47.0 +/- 7.2 years, weight of 97.6 +/- 13.0 kg, and body mass index of 36.5 +/- 5.0 kg/m2 were prescribed 60 mg/d of fenfluramine and 15 mg/d of phentermine for one year. The NSW Driver Assessment Programme operated in Sydney from 1991-94 as a pilot scheme for the medical assessment of drink driver offenders. In this report we describe its functioning and characterize its 2267 participants. Offenders who had been convicted of driving with a blood alcohol concentration of 0.15 g/dL or more, or of refusing a breath test were referred to one of five Driver Assessment Clinics in Sydney. This article prospectively analyses 10 patients with a unilateral vocal cord paralysis who were nonrandomly selected for laryngeal framework surgery. Pre- and postoperative videolaryngoscopic, acoustic, and laryngeal airflow recordings of each patient's voice were taken and compared with the patient's own subjective analysis of his/her voice. Results indicate that laryngeal framework surgery using the surgical technique described in this paper gives a statistically and clinically improved voice in the short term.

This pilot study evaluated the association between substance abuse outcome and putative protective factors in sons of alcoholic fathers. In this pilot study the concentrations of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) was determined by capillary column gas chromatography in bone marrow from 29 adults. The highest concentration in all adult individuals was detected for PCB no. 180 (mean = 0.991) followed by two other highly chlorinated PCBs, no. 153 (mean = 0.918) and no. 138 (mean = 0.927).
