Evaluation of meso- and microplastic ingestion by the northern fulmar through a non-lethal sampling method.

An increasing number of organisms from the polar regions are reported contaminated by plastic. Rarely a non-killing sampling method is used. In this study we wanted to assess plastic levels using stomach flushing and evaluate the method suitability for further research and monitoring. The stomach of 22 fulmars from Bjørnøya, Svalbard, were flushed with water in the field. On return to the laboratory, the regurgitated content was digested using potassium hydroxide. The extracted plastics were visually characterised and analysed with spectroscopy. Only three birds had plastics in their stomach, …

A framework for modular modelling of recycling process chains in life cycle assessment: concept and practical implementation for the case of post-consumer plastic packaging.

Recycling is one key strategy of the Circular Economy, especially for post-consumer plastic packaging. Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) has investigated this topic for a long time, however literature criticizes the modelling of recycling in LCA studies as incomplete and oversimplified, stating a gap between the variability of real-world practices of waste management and modelled scenarios. Consequently, Life Cycle Inventory (LCI) will have to draw more information from real-world investigations, which in turn requires a structured approach to compile data from different activity fields of waste man

Dependencies in heterogeneous, lineage plastic patient-derived prostate cancer organoids revealed through integrated single-cell multiomics and CRISPR screening.

Lineage plasticity and tumor heterogeneity limit the effectiveness of targeted therapies, yet the functional dependencies used to nominate therapeutic targets are often derived from homogeneous systems that fail to capture this complexity. Here, we establish a framework to resolve state-specific genetic vulnerabilities by integrating single-cell multiomics (RNA and ATAC) with pooled CRISPR-Cas9 screening across a large panel of patient-derived organoids (PDOs) from castrate-resistant prostate cancer (CRPC) and neuroendocrine prostate cancer (NEPC). We generate a single-cell multiome atlas span

Dual production of turquoise hydrogen and hybrid carbon nano materials from plastic waste over Co-Mo/Al-Mg catalysts.

An optimized Co-Mo/Al₂O₃-MgO catalyst composition was developed to achieve stable and prolonged catalytic performance for the production of turquoise hydrogen from low-density polyethylene (LDPE) waste while simultaneously tailoring the morphology of the resulting carbon nanomaterials. To investigate the influence of support composition on catalytic performance, a series of Al₂O₃-MgO binary oxide supports with different weight ratios (Al75:Mg25, Al50:Mg50, and Al25:Mg75) were synthesized. The prepared supports and their corresponding fresh and spent catalysts were comprehensively characterized

Understanding the role of plastic and reconstructive surgery in a high-trauma setting: A multicenter study of academic and clinical exposure among Syrian medical students.

INTRODUCTION: Plastic and reconstructive surgery (PRS) is often perceived primarily as cosmetic, shaped by limited medical training exposure and public narratives. In Syria, ongoing conflict has caused high burdens of trauma, burns, and complex injuries, making awareness of PRS's full reconstructive scope critical for career choices, referrals, and patient care. We evaluated how teaching and clinical rotations influence medical students' perceptions of PRS. METHODS: A multicenter cross-sectional study was conducted across three Damascus universities from August to October 2023. A total of 155

Changes in cortical plasticity induced by paired associative stimulation in people with mild cognitive impairment and Alzheimer's disease: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Paired associative stimulation (PAS) is a non-invasive neuromodulation paradigm capable of inducing long-term potentiation (LTP)- or long-term depression (LTD)-like plasticity. It has been used to probe neuroplasticity and corticospinal excitability alterations in Alzheimer's disease (AD) and mild cognitive impairment (MCI). However, existing studies report inconsistent directions and magnitudes of PAS-induced plasticity changes across the AD continuum. METHODS: We searched PubMed, Web of Science, Embase, and the Cochrane Library from database inception to December 2025. Eligible

Ontogeny and Stress-Induced Plasticity of Osmoregulatory Machinery in Exopalaemon carinicauda: Distinct Spatiotemporal Localization of Na+/K+-ATPase and Carbonic Anhydrase Isoforms.

The euryhaline shrimp Exopalaemon carinicauda is a valuable model for studying osmoregulation, yet the developmental establishment and spatial localization of its key ion-transport sites remain unclear. This study investigated the spatiotemporal expression of Na+/K+-ATPase (EcNKA), cytoplasmic carbonic anhydrase (EcCAc), and glycosylphosphatidylinositol-linked carbonic anhydrase (EcCAg) during early ontogeny and their subcellular responses to salinity and alkalinity stress in juvenile gills of E. carinicauda. Quantitative real-time PCR was used to detect the changes in mRNA expression of the t

Fully Quantized Training vs. Post-Training Quantization for a Small Hyperspectral Transformer Model for Pixel-Level Foreign Plastic Object Classification.

Low-precision floating-point computation has become central to efficient artificial intelligence, yet its behavior for compact transformer-based hyperspectral imaging (HSI) models remains underexplored. In this work, we present a controlled comparative study of fully quantized training (FQT) and post-training quantization (PTQ) for pixel-wise foreign plastic object (FPO) classification in poultry hyperspectral data. Using a fixed state-of-the-art spatial-spectral transformer backbone, a common mixed-precision strategy, and identical training and inference protocols, we evaluate FP32, FP16, BF1

Thermo-Chemical Recycling of SRM from Mixed Plastic Waste via Entrained-Flow Gasification: A Kinetic Study on Devolatilization and Char Reactivity.

Entrained-flow gasification of waste allows for high recycling rates towards CO2-neutral chemical building blocks. In order to engineer such gasifier facilities, experimental analysis of the reaction rates is of great importance. Solid-recovered material (SRM) from commercial mixed plastic waste is prepared cryogenically to a conveyable powder achieving a characteristic particle diameter, suitable for subsequent analysis at pressurized conditions in a wire-mesh reactor, a high-temperature entrained-flow reactor and thermogravimetric analyzer. The pyrolysis behavior of SRM is investigated via a

Cold-Resistance Plasticizers Derived from Bio-Based Trans-Aconitic Acid with High Performance on Solvent Extraction Resistance and Volatility Resistance.

Dioctyl adipate (DOA) and dioctyl sebacate (DOS) are widely used cold-resistance plasticizers; however, their low molecular weight and weak polarity result in poor thermal stability and migration resistance. Here, we report the synthesis and performance of bio-based cold-resistance plasticizers derived from trans-aconitic acid with enhanced migration resistance. Tri-n-butyl trans-aconitate (TBTA), tri-n-hexyl trans-aconitate (THTA), and tri-n-octyl trans-aconitate (TOTA) were synthesized via one-step esterification with aliphatic alcohols and applied in poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC). Cutting Through the Clot: Rethinking Venous Thromboembolism Prophylaxis in Plastic Surgery with Aspirin, Direct Oral Anticoagulants, and Low Molecular Weight Heparin.

BACKGROUND: Venous thromboembolism (VTE) remains a critical concern in plastic and reconstructive surgery (PRS) due to prolonged operative duration, perioperative immobility, and procedure-specific risks. While low-molecular-weight heparin (LMWH) has been the prophylactic standard, use of direct oral anticoagulants (DOACs) and aspirin (ASA) has been gaining traction. This study summarizes prophylactic practices in PRS. METHODS: A systematic search of three databases was conducted. Studies evaluating ASA, DOACs, or LMWH prophylaxis in PRS with VTE, bleeding, or 30-day reoperation rates were in

Prenatal Stress Induced by Maternal Immune Activation Disrupts GABAergic Inhibition and Mossy Fiber Plasticity in the Rat Dentate Gyrus-CA3 Circuit.

Viral infections during critical periods of pregnancy trigger inflammatory responses that alter offspring brain development and behavior, resulting in psychiatric disorder-associated phenotypes. This condition is commonly referred to as prenatal stress induced by maternal immune activation (MIA). Here, we investigate the effects of MIA on the neurophysiological properties of the dentate gyrus-CA3 circuit, a hippocampal circuit critical for cortical input processing and memory formation, and increasingly implicated in psychiatric disorders. Pregnant Sprague-Dawley dams were systemically adminis

CRISPR inhibition of activity-dependent Arc expression in the adult mouse brain has limited effects on plasticity in visual cortex and nucleus accumbens.

Neuronal activity drives long-lasting change in circuit function by inducing the expression of gene products that modulate the function of synapses. Arc is one of the most robustly activity-regulated neuronal genes, being induced broadly in neurons by a wide range of physiologically-relevant stimuli. The ability of Arc to promote internalization of AMPA-type glutamate receptors plays an important role in activity-dependent refinement of synaptic connectivity during development. However, the consequences of Arc induction for circuit plasticity in the adult brain are less well understood. We rea

Trophoblast cells rewire the epigenetic landscape of vascular smooth muscle cells to modulate plasticity: a regulatory axis disrupted in intrauterine growth restriction.

BACKGROUND: Uterine spiral artery remodelling (SAR) is a fundamental developmental process that facilitates optimal placental perfusion and supports fetal growth. Central to SAR is the phenotypic transformation of vascular smooth muscle cells (VSMCs) from a contractile to a synthetic state, directed by invasive trophoblast cells. To advance these findings, we sought to elucidate the epigenetic mechanisms governing trophoblast-induced reprogramming of VSMC identity, enabling plasticity required for uterine vascular adaptation. METHODS: VSMC dedifferentiation was assessed by qRT-PCR, Western bl

Retrograde migration of a fractured plastic biliary stent fragment after percutaneous displacement into the bowel in a patient with hepaticojejunostomy requiring repeat percutaneous retrieval.

Biliary stent fragments are sometimes advanced into the bowel during percutaneous procedures with the expectation of spontaneous passage. We present a 67-year-old woman who underwent open left hepatectomy with en bloc resection of the common hepatic duct, Roux-en-Y hepaticojejunostomy, and cholecystectomy for hilar cholangiocarcinoma, and was subsequently found to have a retained fractured plastic biliary stent fragment within the intrahepatic bile ducts. During percutaneous transhepatic cholangiography (PTC), the fragment was captured with a snare and advanced into the small bowel, with the f
