Predicting dry weight in patients with cirrhotic ascites undergoing large-volume paracentesis.

BACKGROUND & AIMS: Ascites impairs the correct diagnosis and nutritional management in patients with cirrhosis, because the body weight, which is needed for nutritional assessment and calculation of nutritional needs, is overestimated. To adjust the weight in patients with ascites, dietetic guidances indicate substracting 2.2-14 kg or 5-15% of the measured body weight according to the degree of ascites, however, there is a lack of evidence to substantiate these values. The aim of this study was to develop new prediction equations to estimate the dry weight, comparing them with the currently us

Development of a Head Acceleration Event Classification Algorithm for Female Rugby Union.

Instrumented mouthguards have been used to detect head accelerations and record kinematic data in numerous sports. Each recording requires validation through time-consuming video verification. Classification algorithms have been posed to automatically categorise head acceleration events and spurious events. However, classification algorithms must be designed and/or validated for each combination of sport, sex and mouthguard system. This study provides the first algorithm to classify head acceleration data from exclusively female rugby union players. Mouthguards instrumented with kinematic sens

A Model of Long-Term Ventricular Fibrillation in Isolated Rat Hearts.

Ventricular fibrillation (VF) is a fatal arrhythmia with a high incidence in cardiac patients, but VF arrest under perfusion is a neglected method of intraoperative arrest in the field of cardiac surgery. With recent advances in cardiac surgery, the demand for prolonged VF studies under perfusion has increased. However, the field lacks simple, reliable, and reproducible animal models of chronic ventricular fibrillation. This protocol induces long-term VF through alternating current (AC) electrical stimulation of the epicardium. Different conditions were used to induce VF, including continuous

Optimizing anesthesia and delivery approaches for dosing into lungs of mice.

Microbes, toxins, therapeutics, and cells are often instilled into lungs of mice to model diseases and test experimental interventions. Consistent pulmonary delivery is critical for experimental power and reproducibility, but we observed variation in outcomes between handlers using different anesthetic approaches for intranasal dosing in mice. We therefore used a radiotracer to quantify lung delivery after intranasal dosing under inhalational (isoflurane) versus injectable (ketamine/xylazine) anesthesia in C57BL/6 mice. We found that ketamine/xylazine anesthesia resulted in delivery of a great

Reliability and validity of the T-shirt test for the assessment of unsupported sitting in manual wheelchair users with spinal cord injury.

This study aimed to evaluate the validity and reliability of the T-shirt test (TST) in assessing sitting stability under three thigh support conditions and with timed outcomes derived in six ways among individuals with a spinal cord injury (SCI). The TST was performed five times under three thigh support conditions (85%, 55% and 25% of total thigh length) in two evaluations spaced between 7-14 days. For each thigh condition, six different outcomes were derived (average or best time from 2, 3, and 5 trial). All outcomes derivation showed excellent reliability on test day (intraclass correlation

A versatile SERS platform based on conductive MOF-enforced carbon paper for rapidly and sensitively monitoring diazepam in aquatic products.

Herein, a versatile surface enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) platform was firstly constructed by integrating conductive metal organic framework (CMOF) with controlled electrodeposition of Au nanoparticles (Au NPs) on flexible carbon paper (CP-CMOF@Au) for sensitively recognizing diazepam (DZP) in aquatic products. The CMOF not only provided a pre-concentration effect for boosting sensitivity, but also dramatically improved the intrinsic electrical conductivity contributing to homogeneous distribution of Au NPs and forming SERS-active "hot spot" with superior stability and reproducibility. Base

Assessing menopause symptoms in women with traumatic brain injury: the development and initial testing of a new scale.

With greater survival rates after catastrophic injury, more women with traumatic brain injury (TBI) are living longer than ever. However, knowledge about this transition in these women is largely unexamined and there are no scales that have been developed to assess the experience of symptoms. To address this gap, we developed and tested a new scale of menopause symptoms in midlife women with TBI. We selected candidate items from two existing measures based on feedback from focus group discussions with seven women with TBI. Twenty candidate items were tested in cognitive interviews with six wom

A novel fluorescent sensor with an overtone peak reference for highly sensitive detection of mercury (II) ions and hydrogen sulfide: Mechanisms and applications in environmental monitoring and bioanalysis.

The present study introduces a novel fluorescent sensor with an overtone peak reference designed for the detection of mercury (Ⅱ) ions (Hg2+) and hydrogen sulfide (H2S). The study proposes two novel response mechanisms that hinges on the synergistic effect of cation exchange dissociation (CED) and photo-induced electron transfer (PET). This sensor exhibits a remarkable detection limit of 2.9 nM for Hg2+. Additionally, the sensor reacts with H2S to generate nickel sulfide (NiS) semiconductor nanoparticles, which amplify the fluorescence signal and enable a detection limit of 3.1 nM for H2S. The

Evaluation of Two Simultaneous Metabolomic and Proteomic Extraction Protocols Assessed by Ultra-High-Performance Liquid Chromatography Tandem Mass Spectrometry.

Untargeted multi-omics analysis of plasma is an emerging tool for the identification of novel biomarkers for evaluating disease prognosis, and for developing a better understanding of molecular mechanisms underlying human disease. The successful application of metabolomic and proteomic approaches relies on reproducibly quantifying a wide range of metabolites and proteins. Herein, we report the results of untargeted metabolomic and proteomic analyses from blood plasma samples following analyte extraction by two frequently-used solvent systems: chloroform/methanol and methanol-only. Whole blood

Content Validity of the Spanish Adaptation of the Premature Infant Pain Profile Revised.

BACKGROUND: To the best of our knowledge, there are no validated neonatal pain assessment scales in Spanish. Given the need for such a scale, a study was undertaken to adapt and validate the Premature Infant Pain Profile-Revised (PIPP-R) scale. After translation and back-translation, content validity was addressed, a crucial phase in validation studies, in which researchers examine whether the items that make up the scale represent the content that the scale is intended to assess. AIMS: The aim was to provide evidence for the content validity of the Spanish adaptation of the PIPP-R scale. ME
