Focal chorioretinal atrophic lesions in patients treated with hemodialysis.

Five patients treated with hemodialysis had focal chorioretinal atrophic lesions. These lesions had not been noted before the hemodialysis treatment. Although the lesions resembled those of ocular toxoplasmosis and histoplasmosis, serum titers and skin reactions for those organisms were negative or within the normal range. Focal retinochoroidal lesions in patients receiving hemodialysis may indicate a possible sign of infection.

Small neuroretinal rim and large parapapillary atrophy as predictive factors for progression of glaucomatous optic neuropathy.

PURPOSE: To evaluate which morphologic features of the optic disc are predictive factors for progressive neuroretinal rim loss in chronic open-angle glaucoma. DESIGN: Prospective, observational case series. PARTICIPANTS: The study included 394 eyes of 257 white patients with chronic open-angle glaucoma. Mean follow-up time was 31.8 months (median, 39.7 months). Progression of glaucoma was defined as loss of neuroretinal rim as detected by disc photographs. Presence of optic disc hemorrhages was not taken into account. METHODS: All patients underwent repeated qualitative and morphometric eva

Pericytes as key mediators of microenvironmental signaling crosstalk: implications in vascular diseases and cancer.

Pericytes are important components of microenvironmental signaling interactions within the microvascular wall and participate in maintaining vascular stability and regulating endothelial function. They are increasingly recognized as important components of the vascular microenvironment rather than isolated structural cells. Under physiological conditions, they integrate biochemical, mechanical, and immune signals to preserve vascular barrier integrity and support vessel remodeling, functioning as one component of a broader multicellular network that includes endothelial cells, astrocytes, smoo

Baseline choroidal microvasculature dropout as a predictor of rapid global structural loss in open-angle glaucoma.

This study included 102 open-angle glaucoma (OAG) eyes with or without a localized choroidal microvasculature dropout (CMvD) at the inferior hemiretina, matched for age (≤ 10 years), axial length (≤ 1 mm), and visual field severity (≤ 1dB), and with a minimum 2-year follow-up. Serial thickness [circumpapillary retinal nerve fiber layer (cpRNFLT) and macular ganglion cell-inner plexiform layer thickness (mGCIPLT)], and vessel density (VD) [circumpapillary (cpVD) and macular VD (mVD)] parameters were obtained. The rate of change in each parameter at both the superior (CMvD-unaffected) and inferi

Frosted branched angiitis due to viral meningo-encephalitis and ocular toxoplasmosis; a rare case report from Nepal.

UNLABELLED: Frosted branched angiitis (FBA) is characteristic florid translucent retinal perivascular sheathing of both arterioles and venules in association with variable uveitis and vasculitis affecting the entire retina. The vascular sheathing is supposed to be an immune-mediated reaction, possibly due to immune complex deposition in vessel walls secondary to various underlying etiologies. The authors aim to report a case of FBA secondary to herpes simplex virus and Toxoplasma gondii infection causing the diagnostic dilemma. This is the first case report on FBA from Nepal. CASE REPORT: An

A novel stop codon mutation of TSPAN12 gene in Chinese patients with familial exudative vitreoretinopathy.

BACKGROUND: Familial exudative vitreoretinopathy (FEVR) is a group of inherited eye diseases characterized by premature arrest of retinal vessel development. The purpose of our study was to characterize the genetic causes and clinical features in eight Chinese families with FEVR using next-generation sequencing (NGS) technology. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Eight families with FEVR were included in genetic and clinical analyses. We screened the proband and the parents in eight pedigrees with FEVR using targeted NGS approach and in silico analysis to determine the causative mutation for their family

IgG4-related disease with hypergammaglobulinemic hyperviscosity and retinopathy.

Immunoglobulin G4-related disease (IgG4-RD) is a recently described entity with protean manifestations. We describe a novel case of IgG4-RD with hypergammaglobulinemic hyperviscosity responsive to fludarabine and rituximab. A 33-year-old Asian man developed bilateral lacrimal gland and submandibular salivary gland swelling with cervical lymphadenopathy. Biopsies of the affected tissues revealed reactive follicular hyperplasia. Seven years later, he presented with bilateral retinal hemorrhages due to hyperviscosity syndrome from profound polyclonal increase in IgG, including marked IgG4 elevati
