BACKGROUND: While recent data on vitamin A deficiency (VAD) prevalence is lacking, the 2004 Côte d'Ivoire Nutrition and Mortality Survey reported that 26.7% of children aged 6-59 months were affected by VAD, and approximately 60% were at risk. Since 2016, the government has transitioned from mass campaigns to routine vitamin A supplementation (VAS) delivery integrated into health services. However, evidence on the cost-effectiveness of the routine distribution approaches is limited. This study evaluated the cost, coverage, and cost-effectiveness of three routine VAS delivery strategies across

UNLABELLED: Pregnant women in rural Uganda largely rely on medicinal plants for inducing labor, treating postpartum hemorrhage (PPH), and inducing abortion. 90% of the women in both rural and urban Uganda use plants to manage pregnancy symptoms like constipation, heartburn, morning sickness, body aches, nausea, and vomiting. After delivery women continue using plants to manage postpartum complications and for infant care especially herbal baths. This study documented how ethnomedical folklore has been used to aid childbirth, manage postpartum hemorrhage, and induce abortion.

BACKGROUND: Studies from rural South Africa indicate that people living with HIV (PLHIV) may have better health outcomes than those without, potentially due to the frequent healthcare visits necessitated by infection. Here, we examined the association between HIV status and healthcare utilization, using diabetes as an illustrative comparator of another high-burden, healthcare-intensive disease.
METHODS: Our exposure of interest was awareness of positive disease status for both HIV and diabetes. We identified 742 individuals who were HIV-positive and aware of their status and 305 who had diabe

BACKGROUND: Smear microscopy lacks sensitivity especially in HIV co-infection, resulting in undiagnosed tuberculosis (TB) and high mortality. The loop-mediated isothermal amplification (TB-LAMP) assay can be staged with minimal infrastructure, is rapid, low cost and detection can be with the naked eye. We assessed feasibility and performance of Eiken TB-LAMP test at point-of-need in TB diagnosis in a high prevalence TB/HIV rural setting in Uganda.
METHODS: From October 2013-February 2014, TB-LAMP testing was performed on sputum specimens from outpatient presumptive TB adults at a district hos

BACKGROUND: Recently, we determined that in a rigorously monitored environment an intensive diet-induced weight loss of 10% combined with exercise was significantly more effective at reducing pain in men and women with symptomatic knee osteoarthritis (OA) than either intervention alone. Compared to previous long-term weight loss and exercise trials of knee OA, our intensive diet-induced weight loss and exercise intervention was twice as effective at reducing pain intensity. Whether these results can be generalized to less intensively monitored cohorts is unknown. Thus, the policy relevant and

BACKGROUND: The role played by social determinants of health including social, economic, environmental and cultural factors in influencing health outcomes for many health conditions has been widely described. However, the potential impact of these factors on morbidity and mortality of infectious diseases particularly tuberculosis (Tb)/HIV co-infection mortality is scantly addressed. We assessed the role that social determinants play in Tb/HIV co-infection mortality in southwest Ethiopia.
METHODS: A retrospective cohort study collated Tb and HIV data from Jimma University Teaching Hospital, So

PROBLEM: National and international efforts to immunize children aim to remove barriers that hinder full vaccination programs and to reinforce factors promoting it. Despite Burkina Faso's participation in all international and sub-regional initiatives to protect mothers and children from vaccination-preventable communicable diseases, vaccination coverage there remains low and has grown irregularly, from 34.7% in 1993 to 29.3% in 1998 and 43.9% in 2003. The situation is even more critical in rural than in urban areas.
OBJECTIVE: To analyze the contribution of individual and environmental chara

The capacity of health systems to provide quality care for pregnant adolescents remains underexplored. This study examined the quality, continuity, and experiences of maternal healthcare among pregnant adolescents (<20 years) compared with adult women (20 + years) in Ethiopia, Kenya, and South Africa. It also explored factors associated with mistreatment and obstetric complications among adolescents using data from the Maternal and Newborn Health eCohort study. We followed 3,051 pregnant women from their first antenatal care (ANC) visit until six weeks postpartum. We used descriptive analyses

BACKGROUND: Filarial infections continue to represent a considerable public health challenge in resource-limited communities in sub-Saharan Africa. In Gabon, the implementation of effective control strategies, such as mass drug administration (MDA), is hindered by a lack of contemporary data on the local distribution, molecular diversity, and associated risk factors of these infections, particularly in rural areas where Loa loa co-endemicity poses a risk of severe adverse events. This study aimed to molecularly characterize filarial species and determine the prevalence, associated risk factors

Small ruminant production plays a crucial role in rural livelihoods and food security in Mali but is constrained by infectious diseases, parasitic infections, poor nutrition, and limited preventive healthcare. This study evaluated the effect of implementing a herd health package on the productivity, parasite load, and disease incidence in small ruminant herds in the Farakala commune, Sikasso region, Mali. This package included regular, targeted deworming campaigns, vaccination against Peste des Petits Ruminants, and training for livestock farmers on best practices regarding feeding, hygiene, h

Tuberculosis (TB) remains a major global health challenge, particularly in high-burden, resource-limited settings. Community-Engaged Clinical Governance (CE-CG) has emerged as a promising framework for strengthening accountability, adherence, and continuity of care by integrating clinical governance and community participation. This study examined the alignment between CE-CG implementation and TB treatment outcomes in the rural Eastern Cape, South Africa, using patient data from 2018 to 2020. Descriptive statistics, correlation analysis, and explanatory machine-learning models (logistic regres

Pregnancy-induced hypertension is the most prevalent medical problem associated with pregnancy. It has been reported to affect 6-10% of all pregnant women worldwide. Mothers' failure to seek information related to PIH increases the risk of death from the complication of pregnancy-induced hypertension. This study aimed to assess PIH information-seeking behaviour and its associated factors among pregnant women in rural Sekela Woreda. A community-based cross-sectional study was conducted from May 15 to June 15, 2022. An interviewer-administered structured questionnaire was used to collect the dat

BACKGROUND: Chronic lymphatic filariasis patients in Bihar, India, need management of lymphedema to live a disability-free life. For patients who have recurrent attacks of acute dermato-lymphangio-adenitis (ADLA), World Health Organization (WHO) has recommended simple home-based measures that include maintaining hygiene, skin care, and limb movement. However, patients in rural areas are unable to adopt them, resulting in a vicious cycle of ADLA attacks. There might be multiple realities from patients' and healthcare workers' perspectives that were unexplored. Qualitative research was deemed be

INTRODUCTION: Evidence strongly shows that a supportive, involved male partner facilitates maternal HIV testing during pregnancy, increases maternal antiretroviral (ART) adherence and increases HIV-free infant survival. Partner engagement in antenatal care (ANC) is influential; however, the most effective strategy to engage male partners is currently unknown. Engaging pregnant women to understand whether male partner involvement is welcome in ANC, what this involvement entails and how best to invite their partner is an important first step in determining how best to engage male partners.
