An educational intervention to update health workers about HIV and infant feeding.

Clinical guidelines are used to translate research findings into evidence-based clinical practice but are frequently not comprehensively adopted by health workers (HWs). HIV and infant feeding guidelines were revised by the World Health Organization to align feeding advice for HIV-exposed and unexposed infants, and these were adopted in South Africa in 2017. We describe an innovative, team-based, mentoring programme developed to update HWs on these guidelines. The intervention was underpinned by strong theoretical frameworks and aimed to improve HWs' attitudes, knowledge, confidence, and skill

Left ventricular diastolic function abnormalities in hypopituitary patients with GH deficiency: evidence for a subclinical cardiomyopathy.

BACKGROUND: Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) has been associated with myopathies that may arise from immune dysregulation, autoimmunity, or possible direct viral injury, though the exact mechanisms remain unclear. Recognizing these cases is clinically important, as they can resemble primary autoimmune myopathies but may follow a different course and prognosis. CASE REPORT: We report a 59-year-old previously healthy woman who developed acute myopathy shortly after COVID-19. She presented with diffuse myalgia, fatigue, exertional dyspnoea, dizziness, fine motor difficulties, and urinary inco

Benchmark Performance of Emergency Medicine Residents in Pediatric Resuscitation: Are We Optimizing Education and Does Length of Training Matter?

BACKGROUND: Pediatric critical resuscitations are high-acuity, low-occurrence events for emergency medicine (EM) providers in the United States (US). Concerns exist regarding graduating US EM resident preparedness due to limited exposure to critically ill children and variability of pediatric EM (PEM) curricula. This study sought to benchmark EM resident performance during simulated pediatric resuscitations, correlate performance and self-efficacy, and compare differences between three- and four-year EM residencies. METHODS: This was a prospective, cross-sectional, cohort study (2019-2024) ac

Analysis of the effect of multi-channel continuous nursing intervention on patients post-radical gastrectomy.

BACKGROUND: Radical gastrectomy (RGE) for gastric carcinoma (GC) has exerted definite therapeutic efficacy in treating patients with GC. However, a notable risk of postoperative complications (POCs) persists among middle-aged and elderly patients with compromised physiological functions. Hence, developing and implementing reliable nursing interventions to optimize the comprehensive management of these patients is deemed imperative. AIM: To analyze the association of multi-channel continuous nursing intervention with POCs, negative emotions (NEs), and quality of life (QoL) of patients undergoi

Suicide and Self-inflicted Injury in Diabetes: A Balancing Act.

Glycemic control in type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM) remains a challenge for many, despite the availability of modern diabetes technology. While technologies have proven glycemic benefits and may reduce excess mortality in some populations, both mortality and complication rates remain significantly higher in T1DM than the general population. Diabetes technology can reduce some burdens of diabetes self-management, however, it may also increase anxiety, stress, and diabetes-related distress. Additional workload associated with diabetes technologies and the dominant focus on metabolic control may …
