Relationship between scapular muscle and core endurance in healthy subjects.

BACKGROUND: Scapular muscle endurance and core endurance reportedly influence shoulder injury risk. The exact relationship between scapular muscle endurance and core endurance, and how they impact one another in the healthy subjects remain unclear. OBJECTIVE: To investigate the relationship between scapular muscle endurance and core endurance in healthy subjects. METHODS: Fifty healthy volunteers (23 males, 27 females; mean age 20.42 ± 1.04 years) were participated in this study. Endurance of the serratus anterior and trapezius muscles was assessed using the scapular muscle endurance test. S

Boxer's elbow: internal impingement of the coronoid and olecranon process. A report of seven cases.

BACKGROUND: Boxer's elbow has been described in the literature as an extension and hyperextension injury. However, in our experience, there is a coexisting impingement lesion in the anterior compartment of the elbow that has not previously been described. We report a series of professional boxers with elbow disease treated arthroscopically. The aim of the paper was to accurately describe the pathoanatomy of the condition, the key points in its diagnosis, and the outcomes of surgical treatment. METHODS: Seven professional boxers were treated for symptomatic elbow disease. Clinical evaluation i

Short-term Complications of the Arthroscopic Latarjet Procedure: A North American Experience.

PURPOSE: To report on the intraoperative and early postoperative (<3 months) problems and complications encountered with the arthroscopic Latarjet procedure in patients with complex anterior shoulder instability. METHODS: Between 2010 and 2014, 83 patients underwent an arthroscopic Latarjet procedure for recurrent post-traumatic anterior instability. The group's mean age was 28 ± 10 years and consisted of 76 (92%) male patients. A "problem" was defined as an unanticipated perioperative event that was not likely to affect the patient's final outcome. A "complication" was defined as an event th

Ascending curbs of progressively higher height increases forward trunk flexion along with upper extremity mechanical and muscular demands in manual wheelchair users with a spinal cord injury.

High upper extremity (U/E) demands are required when manual wheelchair users (MWUs) with spinal cord injury (SCI) ascend curbs; this may contribute to the risk of developing U/E musculoskeletal impairments. The aim of this study was to compare movement strategies (kinematics), mechanical loads (kinetics) and muscular demand (EMG) at the non-dominant U/E among 15 MWUs with SCI when ascending curbs of 4 cm (3 trials), 8 cm (3 trials) and 12 cm high (3 trials) from a starting line set 3 m before the curb. Biomechanical data was collected during three trials for each height. The curb ascent task w

The pattern of the fracture and displacement of the fragments predict the outcome in proximal humeral fractures.

Our aim was to determine the effect of the initial pattern of fracture and the displacement of fragments on the outcome of proximal humeral fractures treated conservatively. We followed 93 consecutive patients prospectively for one year. Final movement and strength were compared with those of the contralateral side. The final American Shoulder and Elbow Society score and the Disabilities of Arm, Shoulder and Hand and Short-Form 36 questionnaires were compared with those provided by the patient on the day of the injury. Radiographs and CT scans with three-dimensional reconstruction were obtaine

Clavicle non-union: autologous bone graft is not a necessary augment to internal fixation.

Most series of patients undergoing open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF) of clavicular non-union utilise distant autologous bone graft. We aimed to report the outcomes of a series of patients who had undergone ORIF for clavicular non-union without the use of distant bone graft. All patients undergoing ORIF of a clavicular nonunion were identified on the hospital database. Records were reviewed to determine basic demographics, operative findings, and radiological outcome. Patients were contacted and details about initial injury and treatment, and return to work and sport, were recorded. D

Preclinical models for translating regenerative medicine therapies for rotator cuff repair.

Despite improvements in the understanding of rotator cuff pathology and advances in surgical treatment options, repairs of chronic rotator cuff tears often re-tear or fail to heal after surgery. Hence, there is a critical need for new regenerative repair strategies that provide effective mechanical reinforcement of rotator cuff repair as well as stimulate and enhance the patient's intrinsic healing potential. This article will discuss and identify appropriate models for translating regenerative medicine therapies for rotator cuff repair. Animal models are an essential part of the research and

Surgical anatomy of the axillary nerve and its implication in the transdeltoid approaches to the shoulder.

BACKGROUND: Traumatic and iatrogenic injuries of the axillary nerve (AN) are frequent in clinical practice; nevertheless, its anatomy and its relationships with the transdeltoid approaches to the shoulder are not well documented. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Anatomic study was performed on 16 shoulders of unembalmed cadavers. A proximal humeral internal locking system (PHILOS) plate was placed to simulate the osteosynthesis of a fracture of humeral surgical neck. The relationships between the plate and the nerve were evaluated. Selective dissection of all the nerve branches inside the deltoid muscl

High birthweight and shoulder dystocia: the strongest risk factors for obstetrical brachial plexus palsy in a Swedish population-based study.

BACKGROUND: Obstetrical brachial plexus palsy (OBPP) is a serious form of neonatal morbidity. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this work was to study the incidence of OBPP and to analyze its risk factors. METHODS: This is a population-based retrospective case-control study. All deliveries recorded in the Swedish Medical Birth Registry between 1987 and 1997 (n = 1 213 987) were investigated. Cases (n = 2399) with OBPP were compared to all other cases. RESULTS: The incidence of OBPP increased from 0.17 in 1987 to 0.27% in 1997 (p = 0.002). During the same time period, the mean birthweight increased from

Entrapment of the suprascapular nerve.

Operative release for entrapment of the suprascapular nerve was carried out in 35 patients. They were assessed at an average of 30 months (12 to 98) after operation using the functional shoulder score devised by Constant and Murley. The average age at the time of surgery was 40 years (17 to 67). Entrapment was due to injury in ten patients and no cause was found in three; 34 had diffuse posterolateral shoulder pain. The strength of abduction was reduced in all the patients. The average Constant score, unadjusted for age or gender, before operative release was 47% (28 to 53). In 25 of the patie

Electromyographic analysis of the hip and knee during the golf swing.

As golf increases in popularity, more golfers seek the proper mechanics necessary for the perfect golf swing. Surprisingly little scientific work has been published on the contribution of the hip and knee muscles during the golf swing even though most professionals have recognized their vital contribution. Recent studies have described the electromyographic (EMG) muscle activity of the shoulder, back, and trunk during the golf swing. The purpose of this study was to describe the electrical muscle activity in seven hip and knee muscles of both the left (lead) and right (trail) leg in competitiv

Biomechanics of the squat exercise using a modified center of mass bar.

The purpose of the study was to investigate the effects of load height on selected performance characteristics of a squat exercise. A lower center of mass bar was designed that allowed the integrity of the squat exercise to be maintained while possibly reducing the chances of injury. Five trials were performed with the center of mass of the bar was set at shoulder height (C1) and lowered 18% (C2) and 36% (C3) of the subject's height below the normal bar position using the inverted "U" bar. All trials were filmed as the subjects lifted on a force platform. A balloon catheter was inserted into t

Attempted Restoration of Elbow Flexion in Suspected Parsonage-Turner Syndrome Using the Oberlin Procedure: A Case Report With Pending Outcomes.

Parsonage-Turner syndrome (PTS) can present with upper extremity weakness that overlaps clinically with traumatic upper-trunk brachial plexus injury, cervical radiculopathy, and shoulder pathology. Although many patients improve with conservative management, persistent paralysis of elbow flexion after a defined period of observation creates a difficult management decision. In selected patients with preserved donor nerve function and no evidence of meaningful reinnervation, distal nerve transfer may be considered to attempt restoration of elbow flexion. A 58-year-old right-hand-dominant man dev
