Correction of proptosis and zygomaticomaxillary asymmetry using orbital wall decompression and zygoma reduction in craniofacial fibrous dysplasia.

Craniofacial fibrous dysplasia is associated with facial asymmetry, orbital dystopia, and orbital proptosis. Although radical excision of the affected bone with immediate craniofacial reconstruction is usually the best treatment option, complete excision may be impossible in some patients because of involvement of the skull base, including the sphenoid and ethmoidal bones. In adult patients without functional loss or rapid disease progression, a shaving procedure is the optimal alternative for fibrous dysplasia affecting the maxilla and zygoma areas. Lesions in the skull base causing exophthal…

[Inferior orbital fissure and groove: axial CT findings and their anatomic variation].

OBJECTIVE: To show imaging findings of inferior orbital fissure (IOF) and groove (IOG) on axial CT scans and to discover their anatomic variations, so as to avoid misdiagnosing them as orbital fracture. METHODS: 25 normal skull were used to investigate the configurations of IOF and IOG. Five skulls were performed axial CT scans. 20 normal orbital axial scans were studied as well. MPR and RT-3D reconstructions were used in this study. RESULTS: Skulls scans and normal orbital images on axial CT showed three sorts of findings: (1) single bony dehiscence between lateral and inferior walls; (2) f…

Patterns of emergence of the human mental nerve.

This study investigated the path of emergence of the mental nerve in a number of human population groups. Skeletal material comprised 117 Negro skulls (53 males), 114 caucasoid skulls (62 males) and 100 pre-contact Maori skulls (70 males). In each case, the path of emergence was classified into posterior, anterior, right-angled or multiple. Those cases with severely resorbed alveolar ridges that made classification difficult were excluded from the study. Additionally, 56 cadaveric mandibles were examined, in which an osteotomy of 1cm was made on either side of the mental foramen to expose the …

Influence of barrier occlusiveness on guided bone augmentation. An experimental study in the rat.

The present study was designed to test perforated and non-perforated barriers for their ability to promote augmentation of bone tissue. More specifically, 1 totally occlusive barrier and 6 barriers with perforation sizes of about 10, 25, 50, 75, 100, and 300 microns and 1 group with no barriers placed (open test chambers) were used to test the effect of a barrier's occlusiveness on the amount and composition of augmented tissue over time. The skull of the rat was used as the experimental area. Prefabricated, flexible silicone frames with an inferior flange for peripheral sealing to the bone su…

The Asterion-to-Transverse Process of the Atlas Line as a Surgical Landmark.

Introduction  Proposed landmarks to predict the anatomical location and trajectory of the sigmoid sinus have varying degrees of reliability. Even with neuronavigation technology, landmarks are crucial in planning and performing complex approaches to the posterolateral skull base. By combining two major dependable structures-the asterion (A) and transverse process of the atlas (TPC1)-we investigate the A-TPC1 line in relation to the sigmoid sinus and in partitioning surgical approaches to the region. Methods  We dissected six cadaveric heads (12 sides) to expose the posterolateral skull base, i…

Nanohydroxyapatite-Stabilized Pickering-Emulsion-Incorporated Hydrogel Prevents Postoperative Osteosarcoma Recurrence and Promotes Bone Repair.

Osteosarcoma (OS) is a highly aggressive malignancy. Current therapies offer limited efficacy, necessitating innovative strategies. This study introduces a novel injectable hydrogel integrated with nanohydroxyapatite (nHAP)-stabilized Pickering emulsions for the local delivery of receptor activator of nuclear factor κB ligand inhibitor. We assessed the system's efficacy through cell viability, apoptosis, and migration assays in osteosarcoma cells and evaluated tumor suppression and bone regeneration in a critical-sized skull defect model in mice. Our results indicate that the system significan…

Chronic social defeat stress induces meningeal neutrophilia via type I interferon signaling.

Animal models of stress and stress-related disorders are also associated with blood neutrophilia. The mechanistic relevance of this to symptoms or behavior is unclear. We used cytometry, immunohistochemistry, whole tissue clearing, and single-cell sequencing to characterize the meningeal immune response to chronic social defeat (CSD) stress in mice. We find that chronic, but not acute, stress causes meningeal neutrophil accumulation, and CSD increases neutrophil trafficking in vascular channels emanating from skull bone marrow (BM). Transcriptional analysis suggested CSD increases type I inter…

Extensive bony sarcoidosis of the head and neck region: a rare presentation.

We present a rare case of sarcoidosis with extensive bony destruction of the maxillofacial and skull base bones. A 65-year-old woman was referred with an asymptomatic, non-healing dental socket. Examination revealed an oroantral fistula that was biopsied and repaired under general anaesthesia. Investigations included plain and cross-sectional imaging. Serological tests, in particular ACE, were normal. Histology showed benign florid granulomatous inflammation. At 6 months, the patient remained asymptomatic. She was re-referred 3 years later with further bony destruction of her maxilla and mandi…
