Curvularia fungi presenting as a large cranial base meningioma: case report.

OBJECTIVE: Fungal infections are emerging as a growing threat to human health, especially in immunocompromised patients. Candida, Cryptococcus, and Aspergillus are a few of the commonly encountered organisms leading to brain abscesses. In this report, we describe Curvularia geniculata as the causative agent in central nervous system infection. CLINICAL PRESENTATION: Our review of the literature did not reveal a similar published case of central nervous system infection with this organism. A 35-year-old African-American man presented with obstructive hydrocephalus from a large cranial base les

[Dural arteriovenous fistulae in the anterior cranial fossa--report of three cases].

Dural arteriovenous fistulae (DAVF's) in the anterior cranial fossa are uncommon. We encountered three patients with DAVF's in the anterior cranial fossa and reviewed the pertinent literature with regard to the etiology. All patients are middle-aged males. Two of three patients had massive intracranial hemorrhage, subarachnoidal hemorrhage in one and subdural hemorrhage in the other. One patient had a ruptured middle cerebral artery aneurysm and DAVF at the anterior cranial fossa was detected only incidentally. Angiographically, blood supplies were from the bilateral enlarged anterior ethmoida

The extended transbasal approach: a quantitative anatomical and histological study.

Since its introduction in 1972 the transbasal approach to the anterior fossa and sphenoethmoidal region has undergone a number of modifications. The extended transbasal approach with preservation of olfaction not only improves exposure of the anterior fossa, but also provides access to the clivus as far inferiorly as the foramen magnum. An anatomical study has been undertaken to photographically demonstrate and quantify the varying degrees of exposure that this technique provides. The pituitary stalk was used as an intracranial target. The amount of exposure was compared using a standard subfr

[Giant subcutaneous metastasis originating from vesicular thyroid carcinoma: about a case].

Secondary subcutaneous metastasis originating from vesicular thyroid carcinoma is unusual. It accounts for more than 5.8% of most common sites of metastasis for thyroid carcinoma. We here report the case of a 60-year old woman presenting with slowly evolving giant hypervascular lesion in the subcutaneous tissue of the skull occurred 7 years after right thyroid lobectomy. Anatomopathological examination enabled the diagnosis of vesicular thyroid carcinoma. Surgery was based on reduction of the skull lesion as well as on thyroidectomy. Currently, the patient is waiting for radioactive iodine tre

Endoscopic Endonasal Approach to Multilobular Giant Pituitary Adenoma with Cavernous Sinus Invasion and Petroclival Extension.

Giant pituitary adenomas are considered a surgical challenge. Their invasiveness, irregular growth, and extensions make this surgery critical. Because of this reason, the radical resection rate is low in such pathology. The endoscopic endonasal approach pushes its limits to get successful results in skull base lesions. Irregular shape, cavernous sinus invasion, and extensions are being successfully resected during the last decades. Lateral extension, especially posterolateral extension, of this tumor makes them impossible to radical resection. In this video case, we try to present an expanded …

[Demarcation of the forms of osteofibrous tumors of the facial bones].

By means of a case report, we show that the general classification of different forms of osteofibrous skull tumours does not always agree with the clinical, pathological and roentgenological findings. A classification based on these requirements is discussed.

Computed tomography assessment of peripubertal craniofacial morphology in a sheep model of binge alcohol drinking in the first trimester.

Identification of facial dysmorphology is essential for the diagnosis of fetal alcohol syndrome (FAS); however, most children with fetal alcohol spectrum disorders (FASD) do not meet the dysmorphology criterion. Additional objective indicators are needed to help identify the broader spectrum of children affected by prenatal alcohol exposure. Computed tomography (CT) was used in a sheep model of prenatal binge alcohol exposure to test the hypothesis that quantitative measures of craniofacial bone volumes and linear distances could identify alcohol-exposed lambs. Pregnant sheep were randomly ass

Innovations in detecting skull fractures: A review of computer-aided techniques in CT imaging.

BACKGROUND/INTRODUCTION: Traumatic brain injury (TBI) remains a leading cause of disability and mortality, with skull fractures being a frequent and serious consequence. Accurate and rapid diagnosis of these fractures is crucial, yet current manual methods via cranial CT scans are time-consuming and prone to error. METHODS: This review paper focuses on the evolution of computer-aided diagnosis (CAD) systems for detecting skull fractures in TBI patients. It critically assesses advancements from feature-based algorithms to modern machine learning and deep learning techniques. We examine current

A quantitative and descriptive approach to morphological variation of the endocranial base in modern humans.

The cranial base is one of the major foci of interest in functional craniology. The evolution and morphogenesis of this structure are still poorly known and rather controversial because of multifactorial influences and polyphasic stages. Endocranial dynamics are associated anteriorly with the upper facial structures, laterally with the mandibular system and midsagittally with brain development. In the present study, we investigated the endocranial morphology of modern humans using 3D landmark-based approaches, i.e. geometric morphometrics and Euclidean distance matrix analysis. The structure o

Quantifying the Severity of Metopic Craniosynostosis Using Unsupervised Machine Learning.

BACKGROUND: Quantifying the severity of head shape deformity and establishing a threshold for operative intervention remains challenging in patients with metopic craniosynostosis (MCS). This study combines three-dimensional skull shape analysis with an unsupervised machine-learning algorithm to generate a quantitative shape severity score (cranial morphology deviation) and provide an operative threshold score. METHODS: Head computed tomography scans from subjects with MCS and normal controls (5 to 15 months of age) were used for objective three-dimensional shape analysis using ShapeWorks soft

Parental craniofacial morphology in cleft lip with or without cleft palate as determined by cephalometry: a meta-analysis.

OBJECTIVE: To integrate findings from previous cephalometric studies comparing the craniofacial complex of unaffected parents with cleft lip with or without cleft palate (CL/P) children to controls with no history of the disease. DESIGN: Meta-analysis of case-control cephalometric data. INCLUSION CRITERIA: Studies were selected if the unaffected parents of children with CL/P were included and were not combined with parents of children with isolated CP; quantitative data were obtained through cephalometry; the cephalometric variables used were not unique to a study; a case-control design was

Three-dimensional analysis of craniofacial form in a familial rabbit model of nonsyndromic coronal suture synostosis using Euclidean distance matrix analysis.

OBJECTIVE: Simple craniosynostoses produce predictable morphologies of the cranial vault, with growth deficits in a direction parallel to the synostosed suture and compensatory growth at sutures that are perpendicular to and attached to the synostosed one. In coronal suture synostosis, anteroposterior growth is inhibited, with compensatory growth in a transverse direction. Information on growth patterns and influence on other craniofacial regions are not as clear. This study tested the hypotheses that (1), both juvenile and adult rabbits with familial, nonsyndromic coronal suture synostosis ex

Application of resampling techniques to improve the quality of survival analysis risk curves for human frontal bone fracture.

BACKGROUND: In automotive events, head injuries (skull fractures and/or brain injuries) are associated with head contact loading. While the widely-used head injury criterion is based on frontal bone fracture and linear accelerations, injury risk curves were not developed from original datasets. OBJECTIVES: Develop skull fracture-based risk curves for using previously published data and apply resampling techniques to assess their qualities. METHODS: Force, deflection, energy, and stiffness data from thirteen human cadaver head impact tests were used to develop risk curves using parametric sur
