Order of first-play in simulated versus monetary gambling.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Simulated gambling products, like loot boxes and social casino games, contain gambling elements, but are not classified as gambling. They are available to minors, raising concerns about a "gateway effect" into gambling. This study examined the time course of young people's engagement in simulated and monetary gambling, and associations between simulated gambling and gambling problems and harm. A necessary, although not sufficient, condition for simulated games leading to real money gambling is that simulated play must come first. METHOD: Participants were 1,026 young adul

An Evaluation of Health-Related Quality of Life in Children with Nasal Septum Deviation.

BACKGROUND: From the 1950s, the quality of life criterion came to be studied in earnest, originally forming a part of measurement of human development in Western Europe and the USA. The present study aims to compare the health-related quality of life (HRQL) between children with nasal septum deviation and healthy children controls. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Subjects were children suffering from nasal septum deviation, one of the commonest chronic diseases of the upper respiratory tract. Controls were randomly recruited from kindergarten, primary and secondary schools (junior high school & high s

Interventions for children with deafblindness-An integrative review.

BACKGROUND: Deafblindness is a rare condition, and its prevalence has been reported to be approximately 1 in 27 000 new-borns worldwide. For individuals with deafblindness, lifelong interventions and support are needed to be able to develop communication, be active and preserve a good quality of life. Because little is known about what kind of support and interventions can be offered to children with deafblindness, the aim was to summarize and disseminate research findings regarding this topic. METHODS: Integrative review principles were employed. Systematic searches in eight databases and ad

Cumulative trauma in bipolar disorder: An examination of prevalence and outcomes across the lifespan.

BACKGROUND: Trauma is highly prevalent in bipolar disorder, and while considerable research has been undertaken in relation to childhood trauma, little is known about the experience and the impact of exposure to multiple trauma types across the lifespan, otherwise known as cumulative trauma. This study aimed to examine the prevalence of cumulative trauma in bipolar disorder and explore its association with illness and other outcomes. METHODS: Participants were recruited online globally and comprised 114 adults aged 23 to 73 years with BD-I (41.2 %) or BD-II (58.8 %). Participants completed an

Mental health outcomes in patients with a long-term condition: analysis of an Improving Access to Psychological Therapies service.

BACKGROUND: Having a long-term condition (LTC) significantly affects mental health. UK policy requires effective mental health provisions for patients with an LTC, generally provided by Improving Access to Psychological Therapies (IAPT) services. National IAPT data suggest that patients with an LTC typically demonstrate poorer outcomes compared with patients without an LTC. However, exploration of confounding factors and different outcome variables is limited. AIMS: To establish the association of LTC status with demographic and clinical factors, and clinical mental health outcomes. METHOD:

Retrograde Cricopharyngeus Dysfunction: The Jefferson Experience.

OBJECTIVES: To describe our center's experience with the identification and treatment of retrograde cricopharyngeus dysfunction (R-CPD), a syndrome involving the inability to belch previously described by only one institution. Additionally, because all patients initially learned of their condition and sought treatment as a result of social media posts, we queried their source and comfort with this form of medical referral. METHODS: Retrospective chart review of patients who underwent botulism toxin injection into the cricopharyngeus muscle for treatment of R-CPD from 2019 to 2022. Demographic

Impact of a Medical Diagnosis on Decision to Stop Smoking and Successful Smoking Cessation.

INTRODUCTION: Smoking cessation counseling is a central part of the Medicare guidelines for lung cancer screening. With increasing age, many heavy smokers eventually stop smoking, however, factors influencing the decision to stop smoking are poorly understood. We postulated that declining health or physician-diagnosis of a medical condition may be associated with successful smoking cessation. METHODS: A total of 4448 current and former smokers in Phase 2 of the COPD Genetic Epidemiology (COPDGene®) study answered a question about reasons for stopping smoking. Participants were classified as s

Effects of diagnostic disclosure and varying diagnostic terminology on social attitudes to personality disorder: An experimental vignette study.

Personality disorder (PD) diagnosis is currently in flux, with the latest edition of the International Classification of Diseases proposing to overhaul PD classification. The stigma purportedly attached to PD labels is a common concern in debates about PD diagnosis. However, there is a paucity of data on the general public's attitudes to PD diagnoses. The current study used an experimental vignette method to explore (a) whether attitudes to a person displaying undesirable behavior are affected by disclosing a PD diagnosis, and (b) whether the different variants of PD diagnoses present in Diagn

Worry amplifies theory-of-mind reasoning for negatively valenced social stimuli in generalized anxiety disorder.

BACKGROUND: Theory-of-mind (ToM) is the ability to accurately infer others' thoughts and feelings. In generalized anxiety disorder (GAD), cognitive and emotion regulation theories allude to the plausibility that ToM is conditional on the degree of individuals' state worry, a hallmark symptom. GAD and state worry may interact to predict ToM constructs. However, no experiments have directly tested such interactional hypotheses, and used ToM as a framework to advance understanding of social cognition in GAD. This study therefore aimed to address this gap. METHODS: 171 participants (69 GAD, 102 C

Adolescent mental health and behavioural problems, and intergenerational social mobility: A decomposition of health selection effects.

According to the health selection hypothesis, poor mental health and behavioural problems in adolescence limit socioeconomic attainment. But to what extent is health selection driven by prior social causation? This paper quantifies the extent to which health selection - here, restricted or downward intergenerational social class mobility due to poor mental health or behavioural problems - can be attributed to the influence of modifiable childhood risk factors. The UK National Child Development Study provides measures of socioeconomic deprivation and childhood adversities, as well as multiple-i

Psychosocial Impact of Postinflammatory Hyperpigmentation in Patients with Acne Vulgaris.

Background: Acne vulgaris is a common, often socially distressing skin condition primarily seen in young adults. Quality of life studies have shown that people with acne are more introverted with increased social setting anxiety compared to a control group. Unfortunately, patients with acne may have residual postinflammatory hyperpigmentation, amplifying impaired psychosocial effects. Objective: To quantify the impact of postinflammatory hyperpigmentation in patients with acne using a psychometric scale. Design: A clinic-based survey was conducted among US adults with facial acne and postinfla
