Childhood adversity and social exclusion among African immigrants: The mediating and moderating role of emotional distress.

OBJECTIVES: Despite the wealth of research examining detrimental consequences of adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) on adulthood, little is known about the effects of ACEs on African immigrant health and integration. This study examined the impact of ACEs on various social exclusion domains including sociocultural, economic, and structural exclusion, and explored the mediation and/or moderating role of depression and anxiety symptoms on this relationship. Additionally, the study also assessed the prevalence of ACEs by sociodemographic categories among this population. METHOD: Self-report da

Structural characteristics of alcohol venues are associated with testing positive for HIV in rural Kwazulu-Natal, South Africa.

The HIV epidemic in South Africa is one of the largest globally, with a 20% prevalence among adults. The South African National Strategic Plan recognizes the need to address social and structural barriers to HIV prevention, as well as behavioral drivers, including alcohol abuse. Nested within a rural community-based HIV testing initiative, including at alcohol venues (AVs), we explored whether structural features of AVs were associated with HIV seropositivity. Of the 488 individuals tested at 46 AVs, 43 (8.8%) were seropositive. The majority of AVs were rural, unregistered, informal, lacked a

Combining functional, structural, and morphological networks for multimodal classification of developing autistic brains.

Accumulating neuroimaging evidence suggests that abnormal functional and structural brain connectivity plays a cardinal role in the pathophysiology of autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Here, we constructed brain networks of functional, structural, and morphological connectivity using data from functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), diffusion tensor imaging (DTI), and structural magnetic resonance imaging (sMRI), respectively. The neuroimaging data from a cohort of 50 individuals with ASD and 47 age-, gender- and handedness-matched TDC (age range: 5-18 years) were selected from the Autism

Enhancing ultrasound education in obstetrics and gynecology in Germany: insights and innovations from postgraduate training.

BACKGROUND: Ultrasound (US) has become integral to obstetrics and gynecology (Ob/Gyn), necessitating proficient training during residency. Despite its clinical importance, there is a perceived gap in the quality and structure of postgraduate ultrasound education in Germany. METHODS: A cross-sectional survey was conducted among Ob/Gyn residents in Germany from October 2023 to March 2024, using the LimeSurvey platform. The survey, distributed via email, social media, and physical flyers, garnered 211 participants, with 115 completing all sections. The questionnaire covered demographic details,

The Impact of Patient-Centered, Structured Interdisciplinary Bedside Rounds on Medical Staff Satisfaction, Education, and Experience.

Background Daily interdisciplinary rounds in hospitals are becoming standardized to maximize the multidisciplinary approach to hospitalized patient care. We hypothesize that structured Interdisciplinary Bedside Rounds (IDRs) increase the satisfaction, education, and experience of medical staff and thus detail actionable recommendations for IDR implementation or delineate measurable long-term impacts. Methods This observational study was performed in a 300-bed community hospital. Participants included internal medicine physicians, nurses, case managers, social workers, physical therapists, clin

Structural-visual approach for dental examination in children with autism spectrum disorder: A systematic review.

INTRODUCTION: Conducting Dental examination in children with autism is challenging due to the limitation in cooperativeness that is caused by impairment of communication, social interaction, and sensory sensitivities. AIMS: This study aims to provide evidence base for the structural-visual approach in reducing uncooperativeness behavior to dental care in children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). METHODS: Searches were conducted in the electronic databases PubMed, PsycINFO, and Cochrane from inception to October 2021 (CRD42022383409). Randomized controlled trials (RCTs), non-RCTs, and pre

The role of educational attainment and brain morphology in major depressive disorder: Findings from the ENIGMA major depressive disorder consortium.

Brain structural abnormalities and low educational attainment are consistently associated with major depressive disorder (MDD), yet there has been little research investigating the complex interaction of these factors. Brain structural alterations may represent a vulnerability or differential susceptibility marker, and in the context of low educational attainment, predict MDD. We tested this moderation model in a large multisite sample of 1958 adults with MDD and 2921 controls (aged 18 to 86) from the ENIGMA MDD working group. Using generalized linear mixed models and within-sample split-half

More than Addiction-The Nucleus Accumbens Contribution to Development of Mental Disorders and Neurodegenerative Diseases.

Stress and negative emotions evoked by social relationships and working conditions, frequently accompanied by the consumption of addictive substances, and metabolic and/or genetic predispositions, negatively affect brain function. One of the affected structures is nucleus accumbens (NAc). Although its function is commonly known to be associated with brain reward responses and addiction, a growing body of evidence also suggests its role in some mental disorders, such as depression and schizophrenia, as well as neurodegenerative diseases, such as Alzheimer's, Huntington's, and Parkinson's. This

Narcissistic personality traits and prefrontal brain structure.

Narcissistic traits have been linked to structural and functional brain networks, including the insular cortex, however, with inconsistent findings. In this study, we tested the hypothesis that subclinical narcissism is associated with variations in regional brain volumes in insular and prefrontal areas. We studied 103 clinically healthy subjects, who were assessed for narcissistic traits using the Narcissistic Personality Inventory (NPI, 40-item version) and received high-resolution structural magnetic resonance imaging. Voxel-based morphometry was used to analyse MRI scans and multiple regre

Stria terminalis, amygdala, and temporoparietal junction networks facilitate efficient emotion processing under expectations.

Rapid emotion processing is an ecologically essential ability for survival in social environments in which threatening or advantageous encounters dynamically and rapidly occur. Efficient emotion recognition is subserved by different processes, depending on one's expectations; however, the underlying functional and structural circuitry is still poorly understood. In this study, we delineate brain networks that subserve fast recognition of emotion in situations either congruent or incongruent with prior expectations. For this purpose, we used multimodal neuroimaging and investigated performance

Limbic and prefrontal neural volume modulate social anxiety in children at temperamental risk.

BACKGROUND: Clinical levels of a social anxiety disorder (SAD) often appear during childhood and rise to a peak during late adolescence. The temperament trait behavioral inhibition (BI), evident early in childhood, has been linked to increased risk for SAD. Functional and structural variations in brain regions associated with the identification of, and response to, fear may support the BI-SAD relation. Whereas relevant functional studies are emerging, the few extant structural studies have focused on adult samples with mixed findings. METHODS: A moderated-mediation model was used to examine t

SALMANTICOR study. Rationale and design of a population-based study to identify structural heart disease abnormalities: a spatial and machine learning analysis.

INTRODUCTION: This study aims to obtain data on the prevalence and incidence of structural heart disease in a population setting and, to analyse and present those data on the application of spatial and machine learning methods that, although known to geography and statistics, need to become used for healthcare research and for political commitment to obtain resources and support effective public health programme implementation. METHODS AND ANALYSIS: We will perform a cross-sectional survey of randomly selected residents of Salamanca (Spain). 2400 individuals stratified by age and sex and by p

Sense of Smell: Structural, Functional, Mechanistic Advancements and Challenges in Human Olfactory Research.

Olfaction, the sense of smell detects and discriminate odors as well as social cues which influence our innate responses. The olfactory system in human beings is found to be weak as compared to other animals; however, it seems to be very precise. It can detect and discriminate millions of chemical moieties (odorants) even in minuscule quantities. The process initiates with the binding of odorants to specialized olfactory receptors, encoded by a large family of Olfactory Receptor (OR) genes belonging to the G-protein-coupled receptor superfamily. Stimulation of ORs converts the chemical informa

Women's health and use of crack cocaine in context: structural and 'everyday' violence.

BACKGROUND: There is increasing public health evidence that women who use crack cocaine and are street-involved experience significant health problems and are more isolated with regards to accessing harm reduction and other health-related services. Simultaneously, there is growing acknowledgement that structural and 'everyday' violence are significant factors influencing the health of women who use illegal drugs. Little research has examined how these social processes play out for women who use crack cocaine. METHODS: A critical ethnography informed by the theoretical constructs of structural

Are gay communities dying or just in transition? Results from an international consultation examining possible structural change in gay communities.

This study sought to identify how urban gay communities are undergoing structural change, reasons for that change, and implications for HIV prevention planning. Key informants (N=29) at the AIDS Impact Conference from 17 cities in 14 countries completed surveys and participated in a facilitated structured dialog about if gay communities are changing, and if so, how they are changing. In all cities, the virtual gay community was identified as currently larger than the offline physical community. Most cities identified that while the gay population in their cities appeared stable or growing, the

[Medico-sociologic analyses of the effectiveness of psychiatric consultation (author's transl)].

Certain observations led us to test the validity of the general assumption that hysterical syndromes occur more frequently among those inpatients who are refered to us from other departments of our faculty than among the psychiatric outpatients referred by private physicians. Such an assumption was verified in both hysterical neurotics and hysterical personality structures. Moreover, phobic neurotics, and depressive as well as infantile personality structures were underrepresented among the nonpsychiatric inpatients. These findings revealed a selection in psychiatric consultation. The social e

Not just what is taught, but how it is lived: socially accountable education in health professions education.

Social accountability (SA) is a defining institutional mandate in health professions education (HPE), yet how educational approaches associated with SA are experienced in practice remains insufficiently understood. Rather than examining what these approaches aim to achieve, this study explores how they are encountered, interpreted, and made meaningful by those directly involved. We conducted an interpretive descriptive study using rich picture interviews combined with semi-structured interviews with 46 participants, including learners, clinical teachers, community organization members, patient

Association of Non-Medical Drivers of Health with Completion of Penicillin Allergy Evaluation.

BACKGROUND: Social vulnerability has been shown to influence penicillin allergy delabeling rates; however, the influence of individual non-medical drivers of health (NMDoH) on penicillin allergy delabeling within protocolized frameworks is unclear. OBJECTIVE: We sought to determine the association between NMDoH and completion of penicillin allergy evaluation in a safety-net hospital system. METHODS: We performed a retrospective cohort study of patients with penicillin allergy labels referred for inpatient or outpatient evaluation within a protocolized pharmacist-driven program between March
