The aerobic reactions of nitric oxide with cytochrome c were analysed. Nitric oxide (NO) reacts with ferrocytochrome c at a rate of 200 M-1 s-1 to form ferricytochrome c and nitroxyl anion (NO-). Ferricytochrome c was detected by optical spectroscopy; NO- was detected by trapping with metmyoglobin (Mb3+) to form the EPR-detectable Mb-nitrosyl complex, and by the formation of dimers in yeast ferrocytochrome c via cross-linking of the free cysteine residue. The oxidation state of intracellular chromium has been determined directly in mammalian lung cells exposed to mutagenic and carcinogenic chromium compounds. Microprobe X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) experiments on single V79 Chinese hamster lung cells showed that Cr(VI) and Cr(V) complexes were reduced completely (>90%) to Cr(III) within 4 h of exposure of the cells. This result provides direct evidence for the hypothesis that these genotoxic oxidants react rapidly with intracellular reductants.

The vibronic theory of chemical activation and quantum chemical calculations are applied to calculate the stretching vibrational frequency of cyanide, coordinated by the complex of ferric porphyrin with imidazole. Organs from 10 sledgedogs fed methyl mercury-containing organs and meat from predatory marine animals also eaten by humans in the Thule district of Greenland, were examined histochemically for cellular distribution of mercury, and the organ concentrations of mercury were quantified by atomic absorption spectrometry (total Hg).
