Facilitation of neurological recovery in a complete spinal cord injury with NeuroAiD: case report.

INTRODUCTION: NeuroAiD (MLC601 & MLC901)'s neuroprotective capabilities include limiting exaggerated calcium influx, decreasing excitotoxicity, reducing oxidative stress, and preventing glutamate-induced cell death. It has also been shown to facilitate synaptogenesis, neurogenesis, and neuroplasticity. However, its clinical efficacy has primarily been studied in the context of brain injuries, particularly stroke. NeuroAiD's potential application in SCI remains largely untapped. CASE PRESENTATION: A 34-year-old male presented with C4 complete tetraplegia. Following surgical decompression and i

C1-2 hypermobility and its impact on the spinal cord: a finite element analysis.

OBJECTIVE: The authors present a finite element analysis (FEA) evaluating the mechanical impact of C1-2 hypermobility on the spinal cord. METHODS: The Code_Aster program was used to perform an FEA to determine the mechanical impact of C1-2 hypermobility on the spinal cord. Normative values of Young's modulus were applied to the various components of the model, including bone, ligaments, and gray and white matter. Two models were created: 25° and 50° of C1-on-C2 rotation, and 2.5 and 5 mm of C1-on-C2 lateral translation. Maximum von Mises stress (VMS) throughout the cervicomedullary junction w…

Delayed Diagnosis of Spinal Cord Injury in a Patient With Intellectual Disability: A Case Report.

Spinal cord injury (SCI) can cause neurogenic shock accompanied by bradycardia and hypotension. If no preceding traumatic episodes are apparent and the neurological examination is complicated by the patient's intellectual disability, SCI is likely to be overlooked. A 63-year-old man with intellectual disability presented to our hospital. The patient had fallen on the floor; however, no apparent head or neck trauma was observed. The patient returned home after confirming the absence of intracranial hematoma on computed tomography. However, the patient was re-admitted because of hypotension and …

Acceptance of Early Surgery for Treatment of Spinal Cord Cavernous Malformation in Contemporary Japan.

OBJECTIVE: Spinal cord cavernous malformation (CM) is an intramedullary vascular lesion that may present with progressive symptoms. Surgery is recommended for symptomatic patients, but optimal timing of surgery is debatable. Some advocate waiting until plateau of neurological recovery and others support emergency surgery. There is no statistic on how commonly these strategies are utilized. We aimed to find contemporary practice pattern among neurosurgical spine centers in Japan. METHODS: A database of intramedullary spinal cord tumors assembled by Neurospinal Society of Japan was surveyed and…

Using the MouseWalker to Quantify Locomotor Dysfunction in a Mouse Model of Spinal Cord Injury.

The execution of complex and highly coordinated motor programs, such as walking and running, is dependent on the rhythmic activation of spinal and supra-spinal circuits. After a thoracic spinal cord injury, communication with upstream circuits is impaired. This, in turn, leads to a loss of coordination, with limited recovery potential. Hence, to better evaluate the degree of recovery after the administration of drugs or therapies, there is a necessity for new, more detailed, and accurate tools to quantify gait, limb coordination, and other fine aspects of locomotor behavior in animal models of…

Comorbidity of cardiorespiratory and locomotor dysfunction following cervical spinal cord injury in the rat.

Cervical spinal cord injury interrupts supraspinal pathways innervating thoracic sympathetic preganglionic neurons and results in cardiovascular dysfunction. Both respiratory and locomotor functions were also impaired due to damages of motoneuron pools controlling respiratory and forelimb muscles, respectively. However, no study has investigated autonomic and somatic motor functions in the same animal model. The present study aimed to establish a cervical spinal cord injury model to evaluate cardiorespiratory response and locomotor activity in unanesthetized rats. Cardiovascular response and r…

Diagnosis and Management of Cardiovascular Risk in Individuals With Spinal Cord Injury: A Narrative Review.

More than 16 000 Americans experience spinal cord injury (SCI), resulting in chronic disability and other secondary sequelae, each year. Improvements in acute medical management have increased life expectancy. Cardiovascular disease is a leading cause of death in this population, and seems to occur earlier in individuals with SCI compared with the general population. People with SCI experience a high burden of traditional cardiovascular disease risk factors, including dyslipidemia and diabetes, and demonstrate anatomic, metabolic, and physiologic changes alongside stark reductions in physical …

A case report of the treatment and care of decubitus ulcers in macaques with spinal cord injury.

Decubitus ulcers are a common spinal cord injury (SCI) complication that puts patients' lives in danger and has emerged as a more prevalent issue in modern clinical rehabilitation and care. Decubitus ulcers in humans can currently be treated in a number of different ways, but there are fewer studies on how to treat and care for decubitus ulcers in macaques. To treat a 20-year-old adult male macaque monkey with SCI and decubitus ulcers after a quarter transection of the thoracic spinal cord, a number of scientific care procedures and pharmaceutical treatments, such as dietary changes and topica…
