The psychological sequelae of miscarriage: a critical review of the literature.

Miscarriage, although a common event in pregnancy, has been frequently overlooked in psychological research. This paper reviews the literature on the psychological sequelae of miscarriage, including the shortcomings of that literature. Best understood against the background of psychological changes in early pregnancy, the literature reveals aspects of grief specific to miscarriage. Important components of this grief comprise high levels of guilt, the loss of part of the self and a large impact upon personal identity. The psychological sequelae impact upon other family members, including partne

The lifetime prevalence of anxiety disorders in Iceland as estimated by the US National Institute of Mental Health Diagnostic Interview Schedule.

The lifetime prevalence of anxiety disorders was estimated in a study of the prevalence of mental disorders in Iceland. The survey instrument was an Icelandic translation of the US National Institute of Mental Health Diagnostic Interview Schedule. The cohort consisted of one half of those born in the year 1931. The participation rate was 79.3%. The overall prevalence of anxiety disorders was 44%, with phobia effecting 18%. The most common anxiety disorder was generalized anxiety, which had a prevalence of 22% and was more common among women. Simple phobia was the most common of the phobic diso

Circadian instability following mass trauma predicts PTSD risk.

Trauma exposure can lead to posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) in a subset of vulnerable individuals. Circadian rhythm disturbances have emerged as a candidate pathway of vulnerability, yet mean circadian levels often show limited discriminability. We tested whether circadian instability at trauma aftermath prospectively predicts long-term PTSD risk, and what behavioral and physiological indices are most predictive. For that, 211 survivors of the Supernova music festival mass-trauma event and 113 matched comparison participants were monitored in real-world settings for one-month, two-to-six

Threat processing and PTSD symptom progression over repeated combat deployments.

Background: Psychological reaction to traumatic exposure is heterogeneous and is typically reflected in distinct longitudinal patterns of symptoms development. Various pre-deployment factors have been found to play a role in determining subsequent PTSD symptom trajectories. Objective: Here we delineate the role of threat-related information processing in predicting trajectories of trauma-related PTSD symptom scores conditional on endorsed exposure among combat-deployed infantry soldiers. Methods: A cohort of infantry soldiers (N = 596) was followed over multiple combat deployments to assess the

Quantifying the spatiotemporal associations of flooding on mental health using telehealth call data.

Floods have increased in both frequency and severity in recent decades. National surveys within England have linked flooding to elevated anxiety, depression, and Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). This study analyses daily telephone helpline calls related to mental health problems to assess the spatiotemporal patterns of flood risk and the 2015/2016 winter floods. Spatial analysis categorised postcode districts by flood risk (High, Medium, Low, Very Low) and proximity (Flood, <1 km, 1-5 km, 5-10 km). Interrupted time series and generalised linear models evaluated trends, adjusting for conf

Case Report on the Augmentation of Cognitive Processing Therapy with Spiritual Counseling to Address Faith-Based Concerns for an Operator with High Religiosity.

This case report describes treatment of a Special Operations Forces (SOF) Operator with high religiosity experiencing posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and moral injury after exposure to indirect combat-related trauma via real-time audiovisual drone feed. The patient completed virtual massed cognitive processing therapy (CPT) augmented by a single spiritual counseling session to address faith-based concerns interfering with trauma processing. Initial symptom exacerbation occurred early during CPT, but following spiritual counseling, the patient engaged more fully in therapy, leading to a si

From trigger to response: an ecological momentary study of intrusive memory sequences in PTSD and complex PTSD.

Background: Intrusive trauma memories are a hallmark symptom of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and contribute substantially to its persistence. However, the sequential unfolding of intrusions, from pre-intrusion states to post-intrusion responses, remains insufficiently understood.Method: In a pre-registered Ecological Momentary Assessment study, we examined 553 intrusions reported by 51 individuals diagnosed with PTSD or complex PTSD (cPTSD), capturing key features of the intrusion sequence, including content, modality, triggers, and responses. Results: Results showed high within-person

Trauma disclosure and willingness to involve close others in therapy across two exposure-based treatments for PTSD.

Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) occurs in an interpersonal context. Little is known about veterans' communication with their loved ones regarding their trauma. Even less is known about how their attitudes (e.g., willingness to include a family member (FM) in treatment) and behaviors (e.g., trauma disclosure) evolve during and after trauma-focused treatment. The study explored these attitudes and behaviors among veterans diagnosed with PTSD (N = 167) who were randomized (1:1) to Prolonged Exposure (PE) or Written Exposure Therapy (WET). Results revealed that both willingness to involve a F

The role of short-chain fatty acids and neuroinflammation in PTSD pathogenesis: A gut microbial perspective.

Exposure to severe psychological trauma is a recognized etiological precursor to post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), a potentially debilitating psychiatric condition. Increasing evidence indicates a strong connection between mental disorders and the metabolic system, in which the gut microbiota, as a key component, exerts significant influence on psychiatric health. The gut is often referred to as the "second brain", the gut engages in bidirectional communication with the central nervous system to maintain physiological homeostasis. Trauma affecting the nervous system and cognitive function

Differential contributions of PTSD symptom clusters and their associations with resilience in traumatized individuals with a refugee background.

Background: Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is highly prevalent among refugees due to their exposure to traumatic events; however, many demonstrate resilience that mitigates its impact. Given the ethnocultural diversity of refugee populations, questions remain regarding whether their symptom presentation aligns with diagnostic and therapeutic frameworks developed in Western contexts. Furthermore, evidence is limited on how resilience relates to PTSD symptom clusters. Objective: We examined (a) the contribution of PTSD symptom clusters to the overall PTSD construct in traumatized individua

Preintake attrition among children and adults waiting for trauma-focused treatment.

Exposure to trauma is a pervasive stressor that globally impacts millions of children and adults and can lead to severe adjustment problems. Although receiving evidence-based trauma-focused mental health treatment can effectively reduce distress associated with exposure to trauma, over half of those who schedule an intake session fail to attend, known as preintake attrition. Understanding factors that predict preintake attrition is essential for improving clinical care and triaging the allocation of clinic resources. This study examined clinic archival data sourced from an outpatient training

Molecular pathways of ketamine: A systematic review of immediate and sustained effects on PTSD.

RATIONALE: Existing studies predominantly focus on the molecular and neurobiological mechanisms underlying Ketamine's acute treatment effects on post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). This emphasis has largely overlooked its sustained therapeutic effects, which hold significant potential for the development of targeted interventions. OBJECTIVES: This systematic review examines the pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic effects of ketamine on PTSD, differentiating between immediate and sustained molecular effects. METHOD: A comprehensive search across databases (Web of Science, Scopus, Global He

Targeting mental health and wellbeing in women who have experienced gender-based violence through moderate-vigorous physical activity: a systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Gender-based violence (GBV) is associated with high rates of psychopathology (i.e., depression, anxiety, post-traumatic stress disorder) in victim-survivors. Existing research has demonstrated that physical activity is beneficial for mental health and wellbeing across various populations. However, it is currently unclear whether moderate-vigorous physical activity (MVPA) is efficacious for victim-survivors of GBV. Therefore, this systematic review aims to understand 1) the acceptability and feasibility of leisure-time MVPA interventions for victim-survivors of GBV, 2) the efficacy

Revictimisation Across Types of Interpersonal Violence: A Meta-Regression Analysis of PTSD and Associated Factors.

The literature has consistently demonstrated that being the victim of interpersonal violence increases the risk of future interpersonal violence (i.e., revictimisation). In this context, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is highly important since it has been investigated as a risk factor and consequence of revictimisation. The aim of the current study was to (a) compute a rate of revictimisation across types of interpersonal violence, and (b) examine which factors are associated with observed rates of revictimisation. We conducted a pre-registered systematic search in PubMed, APA PsycInfo,

Recognising occupational PTSD as a statutory occupational disease: a step forward for emergency responders' mental health in China.

ABSTRACTThis commentary discusses China's recognition of occupational post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) as a statutory occupational disease, a landmark advancement in mental health support for emergency responders. The policy mandates legal protections, including access to diagnosis, treatment, and compensation, for workers affected by occupational trauma. However, the framework is currently limited to specific professions, such as police officers, healthcare workers, firefighters, and rescue personnel. Additionally, it requires documented trauma exposure during duty, which may exclude wor

Efficacy of stimulus discrimination training for reducing unwanted memories in student journalists.

Background: Journalists are frequently exposed to traumatic images and events, which may contribute to poor mental health, especially in those starting in the profession. Evidence-based preventative tools are needed to reduce the effects of exposure to these occupational stressors. Previous research demonstrates that the strategy journalists most commonly apply to traumatic images is suppression. Objective: This experiment investigated whether stimulus discrimination, a technique used in cognitive therapy for PTSD (CT-PTSD; Ehlers et al., 2005.
