Mitigating Feeding Disorders and Malnutrition in Children with Developmental Disabilities: A Narrative Review.

CONTEXT: Pediatric feeding disorder (PFD) is characterized by age-inappropriate oral intake associated with dysfunction in feeding skills, medical, nutritional, or psychosocial domains. Children with developmental disabilities (DD), such as cerebral palsy (CP), often meet the criteria for PFD due to underlying neurological, motor, and sensory impairments, compounded by psychosocial stressors. These challenges contribute to undernutrition, poor growth, and adverse developmental outcomes, but remain undiagnosed. This review evaluates the burden and spectrum of feeding problems in children with d

Application of population pharmacokinetic modeling of SVG-101 to evaluate proper dose selection.

Everolimus, an inhibitor of the mammalian target of the rapamycin signaling pathway, is used to treat tuberous sclerosis complex (TSC), certain cancers, and organ transplantation. Although a dispersible formulation has been approved for pediatric patients with TSC-associated seizures, no dispersible everolimus formulation has been approved for adults with swallowing difficulties. This study aimed to evaluate the pharmacokinetics (PK) of a newly developed dispersible everolimus tablet (SVG101) in healthy adult males and determine an optimal dosing regimen to achieve therapeutic trough concentra

Whole-body muscle MRI in patients with spinal muscular atrophy.

BACKGROUND: Spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) is a motor neuron disease with loss of musculature, which is replaced by fat. Previous magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) studies have focused on imaging muscles either in lower or upper extremities, but whole-body MRI can provide additional information on the involvement pattern. This study examined whole-body muscle fat replacement and the relationship between muscle structure, function, and bulbar symptoms. METHOD: We conducted a descriptive, cross-sectional study. We assessed the fat replacement in skeletal muscles using whole-body MRI, the muscle f

Dental Factors Associated With Oropharyngeal Dysphagia in Institutionalised Older Adults: A Systematic Review.

BACKGROUND: Aging is associated with a decline in physiological functions. Dysphagia, a disorder among older adults, impairs feeding and is related to morphological and functional changes in the stomatognathic system, which worsen with age-related physiological decline, particularly among institutionalised older adults. OBJECTIVE: To systematically review the association between oral health conditions, dental status, xerostomia, and dysphagia among institutionalised older adults. METHODS: This systematic review followed PRISMA guidelines and included a search of PubMed/MEDLINE and Embase for

Associations of sex, age, and number of remaining teeth with performance on oral hypofunction tests.

INTRODUCTION: Oral hypofunction comprises seven aspects of oral condition, including oral hygiene, oral dryness, bite strength, tongue-lip motor function, tongue pressure, masticatory function, and swallowing function. Each of these seven has a single diagnostic criterion; however, the use of a single indicator without consideration of sex, age, or other factors is controversial. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the association between the oral hypofunction test and sex, age, and number of remaining teeth. METHODS: The study was conducted at 12 facilities by the members of the Japane

Time-restricted ketogenic diet in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis: a case study.

Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is an incurable neurodegenerative disorder. The most devastating variant is bulbar-onset ALS, which portends a median survival of 24 months from the onset of symptoms. Abundant evidence indicates that neuron metabolism and mitochondrial function are impaired in ALS. Metabolic strategies, particularly fasting and ketogenic diet protocols, alter neuron metabolism and mitochondria function in a manner that may mitigate the symptoms of this disorder. We report the case of a 64-year-old man with a 21-month history of progressive, deteriorating bulbar-onset ALS, w

Feasibility of a screening and prevention procedure for risks associated with dysphagia in older patients in geriatric units: the DYSPHAGING pilot study protocol.

BACKGROUND: Dysphagia, particularly sarcopenic dysphagia, is frequent in frail older patients. Sarcopenic dysphagia is a swallowing disorder caused by sarcopenia, corresponding to a loss of muscle mass and strength. It frequently leads to inhalation and to the decrease of food intake, leading the patient to enter a vicious circle of chronic malnutrition and frailty. The awareness of the major health impacts of sarcopenic dysphagia is recent, explaining a low rate of screening in the population at risk. In this context, methods of prevention, evaluation and intervention of sarcopenic dysphagia
