Vagal techniques for termination of paroxysmal supraventricular tachycardia.

Maneuvers that reflexly increase vagal tone were deployed to terminate the tachycardia in 68 consecutive patients with paroxysmal supraventricular tachycardia. The order and success rate of the protocol was as follows: 57 episodes were terminated with carotid sinus pressure alone or after pretreatment with edrophonium, 5 were terminated with the Valsalva maneuvers and 6 were terminated with phenylephrine. Potency testing showed that phenylephrine evoked the greatest increase in vagal tone. All cases demonstrated slowing of tachycardia ranging from 40 to 220 ms +/- standard error of the mean (m

Increased hypothalamic noradrenergic activity in one-kidney, one-clip renovascular hypertensive rats.

To further define central and peripheral sympathetic nerve activity in the one-kidney and two-kidney, one-clip models of renovascular hypertension, plasma catecholamines and regional brain norepinephrine of these models were compared with the activities of their brain biosynthetic enzymes: tyrosine hydroxylase (TYH) and dopamine-beta-hydroxylase (DBH). Findings in the groups of 20 one-kidney and 17 two-kidney female Wistar rats were compared with those in 10 sham-operated rats. Systolic blood pressure, measured indirectly, and the mean arterial pressure, measured directly from the femoral arte

The influence of delta 9-tetrahydrocannabinol on intraocular pressure in the anaesthetized cat.

delta 9-Tetrahydrocannabinol (delta 9-THC) was injected both intravenously and into the brain stem via the left vertebral artery. Contrary to results obtained with clonidine, neither the fall in intraocular pressure (IOP), nor the arterial hypotension induced by delta 9-THC, were enhanced after the 'central' administration of the drug. For clonidine, a central mechanism underlying the ocular hypotensive effect has recently been proposed. This suggestion is based upon the enhanced fall in IOP after 'central' administration of clonidine. The pontomedullary area is considered to be the main initi

beta-Bungarotoxin and parasympathetic nerve blocking action.

Autonomic effects of beta-bungarotoxin (beta-BuTX), a presynaptic blocking agent at the neuromuscular junction, were examined with parasympathetic (vagus), sympathetic nerve-atrial preparations isolated from guinea pigs. beta-BuTX in concentrations ranging from 0.01 to 10 micrograms/ml abolished the negative inotropic and chronotropic responses to electrical stimulation of the preganglionic trunks of the vagus nerve. This effect was time- and dose-related and was not restored by repeated washings. Such blocking action of beta-BuTX was also obtained when post-ganglionic stimulation was applied.

Mechanism of carotid-occlusion diuresis.

In anaesthesized dogs given large doses of ADH and DOC and subjected to acute left renal denervation, urine flow (V) and sodium excretion (UNaV) rose significantly in response to bilateral carotid artery clamping in both the intact (p less than 0.05) and the denervated kidney (p less than 0.001). This was associated with significant (p less than 0.05) increases of the tubular rejection fraction of sodium (TRFNa) while creatinine clearance (Ccr) remained unchanged. Following a second control period, carotid occlusion was repeated, while perfusion pressure in the left kidney was kept constant by

Management of intractable pain: the scope and role of nerve blocks: review of one year's experience.

This paper presents the first one year's experience of nerve blocking procedures carried out for the relief of intractable pain. The control of pain is complex and has led to the development of Pain Clinics employing the skills of different specialties. The scope and organisation of such a clinic developed at Auckland Hospital is outlined. Some 103 patients were referred with intractable pain from cancer, musculo-skeletal disorders, neurogenic causes and ischaemic causes and ischaemic problems. Of these, 55 percent derived complete relief. Breakdown of results demonstrate that over 70 percent

Types of nervous activity which may be recorded from the carotid sinus nerve in the sheep foetus.

1. In the sinus nerve of mature foetal sheep (120-147 days gestational age) three types of nerve activity have been demonstrated: (a) baroreceptor afferent, in which the nerve activity was synchronous with the pulse pressure wave and which followed pressure changes in the carotid sinus including those caused by compressing the umbilical cord. The discharge of nine out of twelve baroreceptor afferents increased with sympathetic stimulation, (b) a subtype of (a) in which there was irregular activity from pressure receptors which most probably represented baroreceptors discharging at or about thr

The AT-1 Angiotensin Receptor is Involved in the Autonomic and Neuroendocrine Responses to Acute Restraint Stress in Male Rats.

The renin-angiotensin system (RAS) is involved in cardiovascular and hydroelectrolytic control, being associated with the development of hypertension. The restraint stress (RS) model is an aversive situation, which promotes a sustained increase in blood pressure and heart rate, and stimulation of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis. Stress leads to an increase of angiotensin-II contents both in the circulation and the central nervous system (CNS), as well as an increased expression of AT-1 receptors in CNS structures related to stress. Stressful stimuli are associated with the modulation o

Autonomic Function in Fragile X Syndrome: A Systematic Review.

BACKGROUND: Fragile X syndrome (FXS) is a monogenic X-linked cause of intellectual disability and autism. Individuals with FXS often have hi … enotype in FXS across the lifespan. Future work is required to define whether overactivation of the sympathetic nervous system, as indicated by hyperarousal in FXS, can be linked to clinical symptoms. Variations in sample demographics as well as in methodological approaches to measuring autonomic function both hinder accurate comparison of the results from included studies.

Neuro-immune dysregulation after traumatic brain injury: immunomodulatory strategies to prevent infectious complications.

Traumatic brain injury (TBI) induces a dynamic immune response that increases susceptibility to infectious complications, particularly ventilator-associated pneumonia, bloodstream infections, and central nervous system infections. These infections prolong mechanical ventilation and intensive care unit stay and may adversely affect neurological recovery. This vulnerability is driven by brain injury-induced immune suppression, characterized by a coexisting inflammatory response and a compensatory immunodepression, including lymphopenia, impaired antigen presentation, monocyte and neutrophil dysf

Autonomic dysfunction and vasoregulation in long COVID-19 are linked to anti-GPCR autoantibodies.

BACKGROUND: Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2-triggered autoantibodies (AABs) targeting G protein-coupled receptors have been … cyte contraction in vitro. CONCLUSIONS: These findings suggest that AABs play a modulatory role in sympathetic nervous system-mediated regulation of cardiac rhythm and vascular function in PCS. AAB levels did not correlate with BCR and TCR repertoire metrics or T-cell receptor beta variable gene usage.

Interstitial Cells of Cajal Are Required for Different Intestinal Motility Responses Induced by Acupuncture.

BACKGROUND: The movement of intestinal smooth muscle is regulated by the external autonomic nervous system (ANS) and its internal enteric nervous system (ENS). Previous studies have shown that acupuncture has a bidirectional regulating effect on intestinal motility through the sympathetic and vagal ANSs. ENS can independently regulate the sensory, secretory, and motor functions of the intestine. The interstitial cells of Cajal (ICC), the pacemaker cells in ENS, play a key role in maintaining gastrointestinal motility. However, studies on the role and mechanism of ICC in the regulation of intes

A new analysis of heart rate variability in the assessment of fetal parasympathetic activity: An experimental study in a fetal sheep model.

Analysis of heart rate variability (HRV) is a recognized tool in the assessment of autonomic nervous system (ANS) activity. Indeed, both tim … HF were not significantly different, confirming the fact that those indexes are specific to the parasympathetic nervous system. In conclusion, our method appeared to be effective in detecting parasympathetic inhibition. Moreover, inter-subject variability was much lower, and effect size higher, with our method compared to other HRV analysis methods.
