BACKGROUND: The view obtained during direct laryngoscopy is only seen by a single anesthesiologist. The inability of instructors to observe the view poses problems for teaching the technique. The anatomic interactions affecting laryngoscopy are largely internal, hampering efforts to understand why some patients are unexpectedly difficult to intubate. In response, we have constructed a full scale, adjustable, two-dimensional model showing the head and neck in the sagittal plane. In this article, we validate the mannequin and test how various conditions or changes in equipment affect the laryngo…

Historically, children with hearing loss (HL) are often poor readers. In this article, the authors present two divergent groups of children with HL who have better than average literacy outcomes, children with Pervasive Exposure to Sign Language (PESL) and children who are Auditory-Verbal Communicators (AVCs). Outside-in and inside-in factors contributing to literacy development in the two groups of children are discussed with an emergent literacy perspective. Effective intervention strategies that can be used with all children with HL are highlighted.

The purpose of this study was to examine the efficacy of a method to improve reading fluency in children with dyslexia. The method, which we named "subsyllabic," was aimed at automatizing the recognition of syllables within words in connected texts, presented by ad hoc software. Two versions of this method--one self-paced and the other one with automatic syllable identification-were compared to a method based on phonemic awareness, assisted reading, and other psycholinguistic exercises. The efficacy of the two versions of the subsyllabic method was further studied by repeating the first versio

OBJECTIVE: To detect the screening efficiency of general ophthalmologists (ophthalmic residents) as well as non-ophthalmologists (pediatric residents and nurses posted in neonatal intensive care unit) in screening (ROP) retinopathy of prematurity on the basis of posterior pole vascular changes.
METHODS: Prospective consecutive review in a tertiary care hospital setting. Five groups (each comprising of one ophthalmic resident, one pediatric resident and a nurse) examined the posterior pole vessels of 200 eyes of ROP with a direct ophthalmoscope and compared with an ROP specialist using indirec

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to measure and train auditory temporal processing in children with dyslexia and to examine whether there was a transfer of improved auditory temporal processing to reading and spelling skills.
METHODS: Computer-based procedures to measure and train temporal processing of sound and phoneme stimuli were developed. Test-scores for a normal control group consisting of 8-year-olds were established. Second graders with dyslexia were included in the training condition and divided into three groups: a control group, a group specifically trained in sound processing

OBJECTIVE: The objective was to investigate the impact of a verbal memory training task on psychiatric symptoms and cognition in schizophrenia.
METHOD: As part of a larger, 6-month cognitive remediation program, 57 patients with schizophrenia were randomly assigned to receive performance-based, hierarchical training on a verbal memory task based on a dichotic listening (DL) with distracter paradigm. These patients were compared with 68 patients who had been randomly assigned to a control condition.
RESULTS: Training on the DL task was not associated with changes in general psychopathology or

A recent trend in the study of reading difficulties promotes multidimensional intervention, focusing on the reciprocal influences exerted by cognitive and emotional-motivational variables. This study evaluated improvements in reading performance as a function of metacognitive training in 36 children (M age = 8.7 yr.) with different representations of intelligence. Posttest evaluations show significantly more improvement in reading comprehension in children with an incremental theory of intelligence. These results indicate the importance of treatment programmes that take into account both the s

BACKGROUND: The ability of medical students to recognize heart murmurs is poor (20%), and does not improve with subsequent years of training. A teaching method to improve this skill would be useful.
STUDY OBJECTIVES: To determine whether intensive repetition of four basic cardiac murmurs improves auscultatory proficiency in medical students.
DESIGN: Controlled intervention study.
SUBJECTS: Fifty-one second-year medical students in an east coast medical school.
INTERVENTIONS: Subjects were classified into three groups: (1) a monitored group, who listened to 500 repetitions of each murmur in…

Body weight is crucial to eating disorders. Beyond gender, age, and height it is determined by anthropometric features of physique, i. e. somatotypes. We investigated their impact on the anthropometric and metabolic assessment of nutritional status, psychometrics, and other clinical aspects of eating disorders. In 133 eating disordered girls (ICD-10 & DSM-IV criteria) of well-recorded catamneses, various somatometric measures (n = 133), serum leptin (n = 30), plasma tryptophan (n = 108), and psychometric scales (n = 119; EDI-64 & EAT-40) were examined, preferably on repeated occasions of their

This special issue of Memory spotlights research that uses a functional approach to investigate autobiographical memory (AM) in everyday life. This approach relies on studying cognition, in this case AM, taking into account the psychological, social, or cultural-historic context in which it occurs. Areas of interest include understanding to what ends AM is used by individuals and in social relationships, how it is related to other cognitive abilities and emotional states, and how memory represents our inner and outer world. One insight gained by taking this approach is that levels and types of

Children in Grades K-5, selected for reading and behavior problems, received individual tutoring in a program which aimed to detail a hierarchy of reading skills, locate the point on the hierarchy at which each child should work, and provide enthusiastic social reinforcement for successes. Children were randomly assigned to higher or lower frequency tutoring (one 45-min. session every 1.6 days vs every 8.3 days). The higher frequency group progressed significantly faster in reading than the lower frequency group. Both groups progressed much faster during the time of the intervention than they

OBJECTIVE: Teachers' expectations about the effects of physical and emotional abuse on children's classroom behaviors were examined in this study. Not only do teachers have to decide if a particular child is the victim of abuse, they may also have to contend with changes in that child's classroom behavior.
METHOD: Teachers generated what they thought were typical outcomes of physical and emotional abuse on children's classroom behavior.
RESULTS: Responses generally fell into the following categories: lowered self-esteem, heightened aggression, academic difficulties, and poor social interacti

This study of clubhouse-based transitional employment (TE) examined the ability of demographic data, diagnosis, and data on TE participation to predict TE tenure and a one-year competitive employment outcome following TE among clubhouse members. Baseline data on 138 club members who participated in TE over a 6-year period were retrospectively retrieved from a computerized database and written records. Most of the jobs held by members were maintenance or production jobs; members' average tenure on TE was 131.26 days. Older members, those with a longer club membership before their last TE job, a

Narrative format, in the form of an invented short story, is used to convey several essential truths in a didactic essay in Neuropsychiatry. Messages, in memorable form, emerge at several levels. Narrative format is essential in biographical medicine and it could be attractive to students at various levels of learning. There are great values and some dangers in biographical science.

The most important implication of the double-deficit hypothesis (Wolf & Bowers, in this issue) concerns a new emphasis on fluency and automaticity in intervention for children with developmental reading disabilities. The RAVE-O (Retrieval, Automaticity, Vocabulary Elaboration, Orthography) program is an experimental, fluency-based approach to reading intervention that is designed to accompany a phonological analysis program. In an effort to address multiple possible sources of dysfluency in readers with disabilities, the program involves comprehensive emphases both on fluency in word attack, w

The paper analyzes voice disturbances, their causes and specific features in teachers based on the questionnaires filled by 934 general educational school teachers. The teachers have been found to associate voice disturbances not only with changes in the voice timbre, but with different subjective feelings that make their professional activity difficult. The major factors that cause voice disturbances are the voice overloads that differ in teachers of different specialities, their inability to use the voice, psychoemotional stresses, and frequent colds, as well as a combination of several fact
