BACKGROUND: Accelerated silicosis is an aggressive form of pneumoconiosis increasingly observed among young artisanal gold miners. In high tuberculosis (TB) burden settings, its diffuse miliary radiological pattern frequently leads to misdiagnosis as miliary TB, resulting in inappropriate management and delayed supportive care.
CASE PRESENTATION: We present the case of a 24-year-old male artisanal gold miner in Uganda who presented with a five-month history of progressive dyspnea, cachexia, and fevers. A chest radiograph showed a diffuse miliary pattern, leading to a presumptive diagnosis of

BACKGROUND: The development of strategies to accelerate disease resolution and shorten antibiotic therapy is imperative in curbing the global tuberculosis epidemic. Therapeutic application of novel vaccines adjunct to antibiotics represents such a strategy.
METHODS: By using a murine model of pulmonary tuberculosis (TB), we have investigated whether a single respiratory mucosal therapeutic delivery of a novel chimpanzee adenovirus-vectored vaccine expressing Ag85A (AdCh68Ag85A) accelerates TB disease control in conjunction with antibiotics and restricts pulmonary disease rebound after prematu

Warburg effect, as an energy shift from mitochondrial oxidative phosphorylation to aerobic glycolysis, is extensively found in various cancers. Interestingly, increasing researchers show that Warburg effect plays a crucial role in non-tumor diseases. For instance, inhibition of Warburg effect can alleviate pulmonary vascular remodeling in the process of pulmonary hypertension (PH). Interference of Warburg effect improves mitochondrial function and cardiac function in the process of cardiac hypertrophy and heart failure. Additionally, the Warburg effect induces vascular smooth muscle cell proli

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the diagnostic utility of bronchoscopy in solid organ transplant recipients with pulmonary opportunistic infections.
METHODS: From December 2006 to September 2011, 117 cases of bronchoscopy with protected specimen brush and bronchoalveolar lavage were performed in 114 solid organ transplant recipients at Tianjin First Central Hospital. The indication for bronchoscopy was suspected pulmonary infections. The bronchoscopic manifestations were described and the specimens analyzed with regards to bacteriology, cytomegalovirus, P carinii, mycobacterium tuberculosis and other

BACKGROUND: Granulomatous gastritis is a rarely observed pathological diagnosis. This condition often mimics gastric adenocarcinoma clinically, resulting in gastric resection. However, granulomatous gastritis has long been viewed as a benign process not observed in association with adenocarcinoma of the stomach. This article describes a patient with granulomatous gastritis occurring in close proximity to an area of superficially invading gastric adenocarcinoma.
METHODS: Acid-fast stains, fungal stains, standard cultures, tuberculosis cultures, and a VDRL serum test were all obtained. Both upp

We studied treatment for respiratory emergencies over the past 11 years at our hospital, a tertiary emergency center. We supply intermediate management services to a general hospital. A total of 13,667 patients received tertiary emergency medical care (annual mean: 1243). Of these, 1592 had severe respiratory disturbances (11.5% of the total; 971 males, 621 females; annual mean: 143). The most frequently seen conditions were COPD, respiratory failure due to old pulmonary tuberculosis) 35.2%, mortality failure due to old pulmonary tuberculosis (35.2%, mortality rate: 29.7%), bronchial asthma (2

The paper presents the results of a study of the phagocytic activity of leukocytes (PAL) in 98 healthy children, vaccinated with BCG, in different periods after immunization and in 68 children with tuberculous infection (39 children with tuberculosis and 29 Mycobacterium tuberculosis-infected children). An improved procedure for studying PAL was used, in which sheep erythrocytes of two types ("antigenic" and those with a complex of antigen + antibody + antigen), which may differentiate the phase of bacteremia and immune synthesis, were used as an object for phagocytes. In the limited number of

A 54 year-old woman was admitted with cough and high fever. Computed tomographic scan of the chest showed bilateral patchy infiltrates, predominantly in the upper lobes. Eosinophils in the bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (BALF) accounted for 19% of BALF cells. Furthermore, Mycobacterium avium was isolated from a bronchial washing from the upper area of the right lung (S3) and a sample of sputum which had been submitted for microbial examination about 1 month before admission by another clinic. Based on these finding's the diagnosis of eosinophilic pneumonia associated with Mycobacterium avium inf

Objective: To explore the diagnostic performance of CT guided percutaneous lung biopsy (PTLB) with pathology, culture and rapid on-site evaluation (ROSE) in patients with pulmonary infectious diseases. Methods: From January 2016 to June 2018, a retrospective study was implemented in the Department of Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine of the First Affiliated Hospital of Wenzhou Medical University. Patients who received PTLB, suspected with lung infection were included. The basic information, clinical symptoms, imaging findings, diagnostic methods, complications, and changes in treatment of c

BACKGROUND: Loss to follow-up (LTFU) among pulmonary tuberculosis (PTB) patients is a significant challenge for TB control. However, there is a dearth of information about the factors leading to LTFU among marginalized communities. This study highlights the factors associated with LTFU in Saharia, a tribe of Madhya Pradesh having high tuberculosis (TB) prevalence.
METHODS: A qualitative study was carried out during January-April 2020 among twenty-two pulmonary TB patients, recorded as LTFU in NIKSHAY, with ten treatment supporters and ten patient's family members. Semi-structured personal int

We report a case of eosinophilic pneumonia that was successfully treated with suplatast tosilate. A 72-year-old woman with hypertension and diabetes, who did not smoke and did not have pets, consulted a physician with the chief complaints of cough, sputum, and slight fever. Chest X-ray films revealed a permeation shadow in the bilateral upper lobes. She visited a hospital because her symptoms did not improve. Pulmonary tuberculosis was suspected because of an elevated inflammatory reaction, and anti-tuberculosis treatment was started. Afterwards, eosinophilia appeared in the peripheral blood.

TB is a common and serious global infection that is spread exclusively from person to person. The initial infection in most healthy people leads to LTBI 95% of the time, but untreated individuals have a 5% to 10% lifetime risk for reactivating their infection to develop highly infectious cavitary pulmonary TB or extrapulmonary disease. Following primary infection progressive disease is more likely to develop in children younger than 5 years old or those who are immunocompromised, particularly those with HIV infection. The diagnosis of TB in most of the world depends on the presence of a clinic
