Does Schistosoma Mansoni Facilitate Carcinogenesis?

Schistosomiasis is one of the most prominent parasite-induced infectious diseases, causing tremendous medical and socioeconomic problems. Current studies have reported on the spread of endemic regions and the fear of development of resistance against praziquantel, the only effective drug available. Among the Schistosoma species, only S. haematobium is classified as a Group 1 carcinogen (definitely cancerogenic to humans), causing squamous cell carcinoma of the bladder, whereas infection with S. mansoni is included in Group 3 of carcinogenic hazards to humans by the International Agency for Res

Do not Forget Burkitt´s Lymphoma! Unusual Case of Primary Malignant Lymphoma of the Prostate in a Young Patient.

Primary Burkitt´s lymphoma (BL) of the prostate is rare in the adolescent population. The etiology remains poorly understood. There has been some proposed associations to Epstein-Barr virus and HIV. Clinical and histopathologic data of a 17-year-old patient who underwent transurethral resection of the prostate was obtained. We report the first case of primary malignant BL of the prostate in a 17-year-old Caucasian male who presented with hematuria, lower urinary tract symptoms. Differential diagnosis of a prostatic mass in adolescent patients must be primary or secondary lymphoma of the prosta

Urinary schistosomiasis presented as bladder malignancy with pulmonary metastases: a case report.

Schistosoma haematobium is the species primarily responsible for the manifestation of schistosomiasis in the genitourinary tract. It is a parasitic disease caused by flukes (trematodes) of the genus Schistosoma, which can result in acute and chronic manifestation. We report a case of urinary schistosomiasis that initially presented as advanced bladder cancer with pulmonary metastasis on initial computed tomography scan. Further investigations revealed no cancer and pulmonary changes resolved with treatment. The involvement of bladder is the hallmark of S. haematobium infection and it is unusua

Transperineal cryotherapy for unresectable muscle invasive bladder cancer: preliminary experience with 7 male patients.

BACKGROUND: Radical cystectomy (RC) with pelvic lymph node dissection (PLND) and urinary diversion (UD) is considered the standard treatment for muscle invasive bladder cancer (MIBC). In a part of patients, RC procedure is aborted due to unresectable disease, other followed treatment like systemic chemotherapy, radiotherapy or cryotherapy may be a better option. The aim of present study was to report the preliminary results of transperineal cryotherapy for unresectable muscle invasive bladder cancer. METHODS: From January 2011 to August 2013, 7 male patients with pT4b unresectable bladder can

FOXP3+ regulatory T cells in normal prostate tissue, postatrophic hyperplasia, prostatic intraepithelial neoplasia, and tumor histological lesions in men with and without prostate cancer.

BACKGROUND: The tumor promoting or counteracting effects of the immune response to cancer development are thought to be mediated to some extent by the infiltration of regulatory T cells (Tregs ). In the present study we evaluated the prevalence of Treg populations in stromal and epithelial compartments of normal, post atrophic hyperplasia (PAH), prostatic intraepithelial neoplasia (PIN), and tumor lesions in men with and without prostate cancer. METHODS: Study subjects were 102 men consecutively diagnosed with localized prostate cancer undergoing radical prostatectomy and 38 men diagnosed wit

[A Case of Bladder Metastasis from Breast Cancer].

A 64-year-old woman visited hospital with a chief complaint of a nodule at the left neck skin. Skin biopsy revealed adenocarcinoma, and the diagnosis was skin metastasis of unknown primary origin. Positron emission tomography and computed tomography showed multiple bone and lymph node metastasis, left breast tumor, bladder tumor, and hydronephrosis. A needle biopsy of breast revealed invasive ductal carcinoma, and transurethral biopsy of bladder revealed adenocarcinoma. The findings were similar to those for the breast and the expression pattern of estrogen-receptor was the same. We diagnosed

Metastatic Urothelial Carcinoma to the Uterine Cervix: A Case Report of a Rare Entity and Review of the Diagnostic Differential.

Urothelial carcinoma (UC) rarely metastasizes to the gynecologic tract, occurring in descending order of frequency, within the vagina, uterus, ovaries, and cervix. Significant morphologic overlap exists between primary gynecologic squamous lesions (both benign and malignant) and metastatic UC, thus potentially hindering a timely and accurate diagnosis. We present a case of UC metastatic to the uterine cervix in a 69-year-old female initially found to have noninvasive high-grade papillary UC of the bladder. Complaints of vaginal spotting lead to identification and biopsy of a mass in the uterin

Comparing the short-term outcomes and complications of monopolar and bipolar transurethral resection of non-muscle invasive bladder cancers: a prospective, randomized, controlled study.

OBJECTIVES: To compare perioperative outcomes and complications of plasmakinetic bipolar and monopolar transurethral resection of bladder tumors (TURBT) in patients with non-muscle invasive bladder cancer (NMIBC). METHODS: Between March and December 2015, a total of 130 consecutive patients underwent TURBT for NMIBC. Patients were equally randomized into monopolar TURBT (M-TURBT) and bipolar TURBT (B-TURBT) groups. Primary outcome of this study was safety of the procedures including obturator jerk, bladder perforation, clot retention, febrile urinary tract infection and TUR syndrome. The seco

[Three Successful TUR Treatments of Urinary Bladder Recurrence of Colorectal Carcinoma].

We analyzed whether TUR was feasible in 4 cases of urinary bladder recurrence of sigmoid colon cancer that invaded into the bladder. Case No. 1 involved a 66-year-old male who presented with sigmoid colon cancer that had invaded the urinary bladder; he underwent sigmoidectomy with partial bladder resection. Six months after the operation, a small, protruded lesion in his urinary bladder was detected and TUR was performed. He has been cancer free for 10 years. Case No. 2 involved a 53- year-old female who underwent sigmoidectomy and hepatectomy for her sigmoid colon cancer and liver metastasis.

A prospective multicenter study on bladder cancer: the COBLAnCE cohort.

BACKGROUND: Bladder cancer is a very heterogeneous disease as regards natural history. Environmental exposures, constitutional genetic and/or epigenetic background may affect not only the likelihood of bladder tumor occurrence, but also the histologic type of cancer and its outcome. Currently, only a few data are available to study the prognostic role of genetic and environmental factors. Likewise, data on the economic burden of bladder cancer and the longitudinal impact of the disease and the treatments on patient quality of life are scarce. METHODS: COBLAnCE is a large French-based clinical

[Rectal prolapse revealing a tumor: The role of abdominal ultrasound].

Rectal prolapse is rare in children and usually benign. However, there are various diseases that can be associated with it, such as cystic fibrosis or other causes of increased abdominal pressure. Here, we review the various underlying conditions that pediatricians or pediatric gastroenterologists should consider in the case of rectal prolapse. We report on three cases of children with a rectal prolapse and intra-abdominal tumors. Current recommendations and practice do not include a systematic check via abdominal imaging in cases of rectal prolapse. However, in some situations, imaging is ind

Intravesical therapy for bladder cancer.

INTRODUCTION: Transurethral resection of bladder tumor (TURBT) is the gold standard initial diagnostic intervention for bladder cancer and provides diagnostic, therapeutic and prognostic benefit in non-muscle-invasive bladder cancer (NMIBC). However, TURBT alone is inadequate for optimal management of NMIBC, as patients will experience recurrence or progression depending on tumor characteristics. Adjuvant intravesical therapy with either immunotherapy or chemotherapy has been shown to reduce recurrence and/or progression in appropriately selected patients through immunostimulation or direct ce
