Racial Disparities in Sleep Among Diverse Young Adults During the First Semester of College.

This study investigated patterns of disparities in sleep during the first semester of college, focusing on several dimensions of sleep and using multiple methods. Ethnically and racially diverse first-year college students (n = 635; Asian = 20%, Black = 12%, Latinx = 20%, multiracial = 23%, White = 25%; female = 73%, male = 25%, non-binary = 2%) completed a baseline survey, 14 daily diaries, and wore wrist actigraphs in their first semester at college. Across all three methodologies, White students had the longest sleep duration, whereas Black students had the shortest. Across surveys and dail

Shedding light on microsleep episodes for comprehensive sleepiness assessment: a narrative review.

Excessive daytime sleepiness is a consistent and common symptom in sleep medicine. It represents a major public health problem due to its association with significant impairments in quality of life, work productivity, and driving ability. Objective clinical tests for assessing excessive daytime sleepiness follow the universal American academy of sleep medicine scoring classification, which overlooks short intrusions of sleep during wake states, known as microsleep episodes. This narrative review provides a comprehensive summary of the existing literature concerning microsleep episodes, highlig

Leveraging virucidal potential of an anti-microbial coating agent to mitigate fomite transmission of respiratory viruses.

In the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, respiratory tract infections have emerged as a significant global threat, yet their impact on public health was previously underappreciated. This study investigated the antiviral efficacy of the nano-coating agent BARRIER90, composed of silicon-quaternary ammonium compound and a naturally derived biopolymer, against three distinct respiratory viruses: Influenza A (H1N1), Adenovirus Type 1, and Enterovirus-Coxsackie B1. BARRIER90 exhibited robust and sustained virucidal activity, persisting up to 90 days post-coating, against the enveloped virus, Influenza

Association of clinical indicators in TMJ, craniofacial, occlusal, and upper airway changes with symptoms of pediatric obstructive sleep apnea and mouth-breathing.

OBJECTIVE: To assess the association between self-reported symptoms of pediatric OSA and clinical signs in MB children. METHODS: Seventy-three MB children aged 7-14 years answered an interview questionnaire on OSA symptoms in childhood, focusing on chewing, nasal, and sleep disturbances. MB children were checked for changes on the craniofacial, occlusion, TMJ, upper airway, and body posture by a multi-disciplinary team, consisting of medical residents, dental, and psychology postgraduate students. Multiple logistic regression analysis verified the association between clinical signs and self-r

Migraine prodromes and migraine triggers.

Migraine is characterized by a well-defined premonitory phase occurring hours or even days before the headache. Also, many migraineurs report typical triggers for their headaches. Triggers, however, are not consistent in their ability to precipitate migraine headaches. When looking at the clinical characteristics of both premonitory symptoms and triggers, a shared pathophysiological basis seems evident. Both seem to have their origin in basic homeostatic networks such as the feeding/fasting, the sleeping/waking, and the stress response network, all of which strongly rely on the hypothalamus as

"I AM NOT A VIRUS": COVID-19, Anti-Asian Hate, and Comics as Counternarratives.

Ever since the global spread of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, East Asians across the globe have been ostracized, othered, pathologized, and subjected to numerous anti-Asian hate crimes. Despite contemporary China's rapid modernization, the country is still perceived as an Oriental and primitive site. Taking these cues, the current article aims to investigate the Sinophobic attitudes in the wake of COVID-19 through a detailed analysis of sequential comics and cartoons by artists of East Asian descent, such as Laura Gao and Lisa Wool-Rim Sjöblom. Drawing theoretical insights from Alexandre Whit

Differential cortical network engagement during states of un/consciousness in humans.

What happens in the human brain when we are unconscious? Despite substantial work, we are still unsure which brain regions are involved and how they are impacted when consciousness is disrupted. Using intracranial recordings and direct electrical stimulation, we mapped global, network, and regional involvement during wake vs. arousable unconsciousness (sleep) vs. non-arousable unconsciousness (propofol-induced general anesthesia). Information integration and complex processing we`re reduced, while variability increased in any type of unconscious state. These changes were more pronounced during

Autonomic Dysfunction in Sleep Disorders: From Neurobiological Basis to Potential Therapeutic Approaches.

Sleep disorder has been portrayed as merely a common dissatisfaction with sleep quality and quantity. However, sleep disorder is actually a medical condition characterized by inconsistent sleep patterns that interfere with emotional dynamics, cognitive functioning, and even physical performance. This is consistent with sleep abnormalities being more common in patients with autonomic dysfunction than in the general population. The autonomic nervous system coordinates various visceral functions ranging from respiration to neuroendocrine secretion in order to maintain homeostasis of the body. Bec

A variant in orexin receptor-2 is associated with self-reported daytime sleepiness in the Japanese population.

Excessive daytime sleepiness is characterized by a persistent feeling of having trouble staying awake, typically with inappropriate sleep episodes. Orexin (hypocretin) is a neuropeptide that regulates sleep-wake cycles and rapid eye movement sleep. Several large-scale genome-wide association studies (GWASs) in European populations have found genetic variants in orexin receptor-1 (OX1R) and -2 (OX2R) that are associated with sleep traits including daytime sleepiness. To identify genetic variants associated with daytime sleepiness, we performed an association study of genetic variants in prepro-

Lower Limb Weakness due to Spinal Venous Congestion in Chronic Inferior Vena Cava Occlusion: A Case Report.

CASE REPORT: A 31 year-old male presented with a long history of reduced sensation and motor function in his lower limbs upon waking every morning, lasting 30-50 minutes during which he was unable to ambulate. He was involved in a severe road traffic accident as a child, and was born prematurely requiring prolonged neonatal hospitalisation. Both duplex ultrasonography and magnetic resonance venography identified an occlusion of the IVC, with patent common femoral and iliac veins draining into large spinal collaterals. No other cause was identified for his symptoms. After appropriate multidisci

Subglottic stenosis imitating the carina - a case report of airway mimicry.

We present a case of awake tracheal intubation with flexible bronchoscopy which resulted in incorrect tracheal tube placement. The presence of a stenotic subglottic lesion with an appearance similar to the carina led to the tube being positioned with only the tip within the trachea whilst the cuff was located between the vocal cords. A capnography trace was identified before induction of anaesthesia; however, visual confirmation of the carina was undertaken in a rushed manner due to the patient becoming agitated. Once the incorrect tracheal tube placement was identified, the decision was made

Orexin receptors 1 and 2 in serotonergic neurons differentially regulate peripheral glucose metabolism in obesity.

The wake-active orexin system plays a central role in the dynamic regulation of glucose homeostasis. Here we show orexin receptor type 1 and 2 are predominantly expressed in dorsal raphe nucleus-dorsal and -ventral, respectively. Serotonergic neurons in ventral median raphe nucleus and raphe pallidus selectively express orexin receptor type 1. Inactivation of orexin receptor type 1 in serotonin transporter-expressing cells of mice reduced insulin sensitivity in diet-induced obesity, mainly by decreasing glucose utilization in brown adipose tissue and skeletal muscle. Selective inactivation of

The Repression of the HMGB1-TLR4-NF-κB Signaling Pathway by Safflower Yellow May Improve Spinal Cord Injury.

Spinal cord injury (SCI) often results in abnormal sensory and motor functions. Current interventions for SCI in the clinical setting are not effective partly due to the complexity concerning its pathophysiological mechanism. In the wake of SCI, considerable inflammatory cells assemble around the injured area that induces a series of inflammatory reactions and aggravates tissue lesions, thereby affecting the recovery of the damaged nerve tissue. Therefore, the inhibition of inflammatory responses can improve the repair of the injured spinal cord tissue. Safflower Yellow (SY) is the main active
