The widespread use of antibiotics in humans and animals raises significant environmental concerns. However, few approaches can simultaneously quantify their transfer from humans and animals and track their fate in soils and rivers. In this study, we developed the MARINA-Antibiotics model (Model to Assess River Inputs of pollutaNts to seAs for Antibiotics) to quantify the sources and concentrations of 30 widely used antibiotics, as well as assess their associated environmental risks, and implemented this model in the Three Gorges Reservoir Area in 2020. The risk of antimicrobial resistance was

Phytoplankton are traditionally viewed as simple bioaccumulators and key entry points for mercury (Hg) into aquatic trophic chain. However the more recent findings suggest that they can function as dynamic biological systems capable of enhancing Hg cycling reactivity and altering its speciation. Nevertheless, the role of phytoplankton species in mercury transformations remains largely overlooked. The present study examined inorganic mercury (Hg(II)) methylation, monomethylmercury (MeHg) demethylation, and the production of dissolved gaseous mercury (Hg(0)) following exposure to sub-nanomolar c

Cr(VI) is widely used in industry and has high toxicity, making it one of the most common environmental pollutants. Long-term exposure to Cr(VI) can cause metabolic disorders and tissue damage. However, the effects of Cr(VI) on liver and gut microbes in fish have rarely been reported. In this study, 240 fish were randomly divided into 3 groups: the control group, low-dose Cr(VI) group (0.5 mg/L), and high-dose Cr(VI) group (2 mg/L). The mechanism by which Cr(VI) affects the enterohepatic axis of common carp was elucidated via multiomic analysis, serology, histomorphology, and physiological and

Aromatic disinfection byproducts (DBPs) were suggested to exhibit greater ecotoxicity and developmental toxicity than regulated DBPs. However, a systematic comparison of ecotoxicity/developmental toxicity between aromatic and aliphatic DBPs remains lacking. Herein, we aim to provide a comprehensive evaluation of the ecotoxicity and developmental toxicity of DBPs by analyzing epidemiological evidence, aquatic toxicity data (EC50), TIC-Tox calculations, and quantitative structure-activity relationship (QSAR) modelling. Epidemiological evidence suggests that DBP exposures are associated with low

The origin of the bioaccumulative neurotoxin methylmercury (MeHg) in the ocean remains elusive. The current paradigm suggests that the microbial methylation of inorganic Hg within the oceanic water column produces monomethylmercury (MMHg) and potentially dimethylmercury (DMHg). Reaction rates and main drivers governing MeHg levels (sum of MMHg and DMHg) are poorly constrained. We conducted ambient Hg species measurements and enriched isotopic tracer experiments in waters of two contrasting marine environments: the oligotrophic Mediterranean Sea (MED) and the mesotrophic Atlantic Ocean (ATL). M

Mercury (Hg) is a global pollutant and its transformation to the highly toxic methylmercury (MeHg) is mediated by anaerobic microbes carrying hgcA gene, which can affect human health risk through fish consumption. The Pearl River Estuary in southern China is productive but suffers from increasing anthropogenic stresses. However, it remains poorly known regarding the environmental response of hgcA+ microorganisms to climatic variations. We demonstrated that saltwater intrusion driven by prolonged drought led to elevated sedimentary MeHg concentrations, particularly in the nearshore zone, compar

The Helmholtz Centre for Environmental Research (UFZ) conducted a monitoring study of small lowland streams (in German, Kleingewässermonitoring, KGM) in Germany during the 2018 and 2019 growing seasons that included collecting water samples for pesticides and urban contaminants. This study was commissioned and funded by the German Environmental Agency (Umweltbundesamt). A publication by Liess and co-authors in 2021 concluded that 83% of agricultural streams included in the monitoring study were in an unacceptable ecological condition. This conclusion was based on a comparison of benthic macroi

A novel chitosan-biochar biocomposite was engineered as a synergistic and sustainable sorbent phase for the extraction of carbamazepine and its metabolites from environmental waters. The material was prepared using citric acid as a green crosslinker and glycerol as a plasticizer. Its formulation was optimized through experimental design. Compared with crosslinked chitosan and biochar, the biocomposite exhibited superior extraction performance. Mathematical modeling, together with complementary characterization analyses, corroborated this enhancement, which revealed a synergistic hybrid effect

This study examined the removal and toxicity reduction of mixed pharmaceutically active compounds (PhACs), including carbamazepine, erythromycin, gemfibrozil, and diclofenac, in the UV/H2O2 tandem with biologically activated carbon (UV/H2O2-BAC) process and explored potential detoxification mechanisms. Results indicated that the combined process effectively removed the mixed PhACs, with the UV/H2O2 segment being the primary contributor. As distinct from concentration removal, the effluent toxicity significantly increased after UV/H2O2 treatment. Multi-parameter toxicity assessments indicated t

Nitrate pollution in aquatic ecosystems is a pervasive and growing problem globally, which can pose a substantial threat to amphibian survival. The shift in amphibian locomotive behaviors, specifically from tadpole tail swimming to adult limbs movement, are essential for facilitating physiological adaptations required for terrestrial survival. However, there is a question as to whether nitrate exposure affects amphibian motor systems. For this purpose, morphological, histological, transmission electron microscopic and transcriptomic analyses were performed on the hindlimb bones and muscles of

Fentin chloride (TPTC) is an organotin compound used extensively in hull construction due to its excellent resistance to corrosion. To explore the biotoxicity of TPTC, In this study, the molecular mechanism of TPTC-induced scoliosis was investigated in the zebrafish model by combining metabolomics and network pharmacology. TPTC exposure causes scoliosis and neurotoxicity in zebrafish, and leads to increasing curvature angles with the increase in concentration. Metabolomic analysis identified 366 significant differential metabolites associated with TPTC-induced scoliosis. Network pharmacology r

Fluoride is a naturally occurring element found in the environment. However, excessive exposure to fluoride can lead to fluoride toxicity, posing serious risk to human health, plant growth, aquatic animals, and microorganisms. Prolonged exposure to high levels of fluoride can cause dental and skeletal fluorosis, causing brittle bones, joint pain, and damaged enamel. In plants, fluoride accumulation causes stunted growth, chlorosis, and reduced photosynthesis, significantly affecting crop yields and ecosystem health. Bioremediation has emerged as a sustainable eco-friendly approach to mitigatin

Glyphosate-based herbicides, like Roundup WG® (RWG) used for a range of crops, such as corn, soybean, coffee, sugarcane, rice, apple, and citrus, can reach aquatic ecosystems and impact non-target organisms like fish. Thus, the fish were exposed to three RWG concentrations plus one negative control, which represents the concentration allowed for inland Brazilian waters and concentrations found in surface water worldwide (0.0, 0.065, 0.65, and 6.5 mg a.i./L) for 7 and 15 days. Morphological analysis revealed significant alterations in the testicular structure, particularly in Sertoli cell exten

Malachite green (MG) is widely used in aquaculture as a parasiticide. It has generated much concern due to its carcinogenesis, mutagenesis, chromosomal fractures, teratogenicity, and respiratory toxicity. Effective methods for removing MG from water or other media are highly needed. Here, liquid metal (LM) is embedded into the magnetic hydrogel to create magnetic LM hydrogel beads with high adsorption capacity. The morphology and physical properties of the LM-embedded magnetic hydrogel beads are characterized using scanning electron microscopy, optical microscopy, and texture analysis methods.

Bacteria assume a pivotal role in mitigating environmental issues associated with heavy metals, microplastics, and pesticides. Within the domain of heavy metals, bacteria exhibit a wide range of processes for bioremediation, encompassing biosorption, bioaccumulation, and biotransformation. Toxigenic metal ions can be effectively sequestered, transformed, and immobilized, hence reducing their adverse environmental effects. Furthermore, bacteria are increasingly recognized as significant contributors to the process of biodegradation of microplastics, which are becoming increasingly prevalent as

The presence of microplastics (MPs) in aquatic ecosystem has become a pressing global concern. MPs pose a significant threat to aquatic ecosystems, with devastating consequences for both aquatic life and human health. Notably, freshwater ecosystems are particularly vulnerable to MPs pollution. MPs, characterized by their small size (< 5 mm), have emerged as a ubiquitous environmental pollutant. They exhibit diverse characteristics, including varying sizes, forms, polymer types, and colors. Two distinct categories of MPs exist: primary and secondary. Primary MPs are incorporated into industrial

Rain gardens, a type of green infrastructure (GI), have been recognized for mitigating flooding and improving water quality from minor storms by trapping stormwater pollutants. Yet, the capability of these systems to retain microplastics (MPs) from stormwater, especially in size <125 μm, remains inadequately understood. This study investigated the spatial and temporal distributions of MPs in three rain gardens located in Newark, New Jersey, USA. The rain gardens have been in operation for ∼7 years and located in different land uses: low-density residential (Site 1), commercial (Site 2), and hi

Deep-sea habitats are currently recognized as a hot spot for mercury (Hg) accumulation from anthropogenic sources, resulting in elevated concentrations of total mercury (THg) in deep-sea megafauna. Among them, deep-sea sharks (Class Chondrichthyes) are characterized by high trophic position and extended longevity and are, therefore, at high risk for mercury contamination. Despite this, sharks are overexploited by fishing activity in increasingly deeper water, worldwide, imposing health risks to human consumption. While it is imperative to better understand long-term mercury contamination in de

Granular activated carbon (GAC) is widely used to treat contaminated per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) waste streams, resulting in the accumulation of large quantities of spent GAC that need to be landfilled or regenerated. A novel modified supercritical CO2 (scCO2) extraction for regeneration of spent GAC is developed. With the addition of organic solvents and acid modifiers, the procedure yielded >99% perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) desorption after a 60-min treatment in a continuous flow reactor. The mild extraction conditions at T ∼100 °C do not trigger the formation of volatile org
