Thirty patients suffering from Pityriasis versicolor were treated with fenticonazole in cream or lotion form with two applications a day. At microscopy, Malassezia furfur was encountered in 25 cases and Pityrosporum orbiculare in 5. Disappearance of the yeast was obtained on average in 2 weeks of treatment. Measurement of sebum content with a Sebumeter apparatus did not reveal significant difference (p greater than 0.05) between patients suffering from Pityriasis versicolor and controls and in treated patients, in the course of topical therapy.

We had 170 female patients with presenting symptoms of vaginal itching, dysuria, dyspareunia, burning and vaginal discharge. We performed 200 times vaginal microbial exploration on the said 170 patients, with the repetition of the procedure on 30 out of these 200 patients for the second time. We had a positive result for vulvovaginal candidosis on 60 occasions. These positive results for yeast infection can be related to the incidence of other microbial infections such as mycoplasma-, ureaplasma-, trichomonas-, gonococcal- and chlamydia infections.

In a study involving 104 children hospitalized with diarrhoea, 9% were infected with oocyst Cryptosporidium spp. add 56% with such yeast-fungus as Candida (C. Candida 38%). The manifestations noted in cryptosporidiosis infected children are acute diarrhea, vomiting and hyperthermia. One subject out of five who were tested for antibody to HIV appeared to be antibody positive. The patients immunity from the disease was not checked. A mycological test must be systematically carried out in case of children diarrheal outbreak.

Dental implant research has been mostly concerned with the biocompatibility of materials for implantation. In this study the effects of titanium dioxide and other metallic salts on seven bacterial species commonly found in dental plaque, two which are uncommon, and a yeast, were determined by agar incorporation and diffusion techniques, and compared with the effects of a titanium implant abutment. Neither the titanium dioxide nor the implant abutment demonstrated any inhibitory activity, although other compounds such as cobalt used in dental alloys had some effects.

Because safe, effective treatment for established viral hepatitis is not available, physicians need to be acquainted with recent advances in prophylaxis. Immune globulin (Gamastan, Gammar) is used for both preexposure and postexposure prophylaxis of hepatitis A, and side effects are rare. Two vaccines (Heptavax-B, Recombivax HB) are licensed for hepatitis B, one is a plasma-derived vaccine, the other a yeast-recombinant vaccine. Indirectly, these also control hepatitis D (delta agent), which needs hepatitis B virus to develop.

A 52-year-old man presented with a history of chronic lymphocytic leukemia and Kaposi's sarcoma. Three days after admission for clinical sepsis, yeast forms were noted within monocytes and neutrophils on a routine peripheral blood smear. Blood cultures yielded a pure culture of Candida parapsilosis. Despite antifungal therapy, the patient died 22 days after admission. This case represents the first reported instance of C parapsilosis sepsis diagnosed through a peripheral blood smear.

The erythro-immunoassay, a new serological procedure in which a hybrid antibody conjugate is able to bind erythrocytes, was used for the titration of antibodies against P. brasiliensis in sera from patients with paracoccidioidomycosis. A peptide-polysaccharide and a lyophilized yeast culture filtrate of P. brasiliensis were used as antigens. Absorption with dead Candida albicans whole cells was necessary to decrease cross reactions observed with heterologous sera. A nine year old domestic shorthair cat was presented to the Small Animal Clinic, Ontario Veterinary College, with anorexia, depression and blindness. The animal died despite treatment. Vertebrate immunoglobulin (Ig) mRNAs reveal intraspecies variation in codon usage distinct from that seen with yeast or bacterial genes. Comparison of all available Ig gene sequences shows that %(G + C) in codon position III is consistently lower in variable (V) segments than in constant (C) segments. I find an even lower %(G + C) in the hypervariable domains of V segments. This analysis suggests that base substitution in Ig genes correlates positively with local A + T content.

A granuloma of the skin of one hand, accompanied by supratrochlear lymphadenitis, became evident about 3 months after the patient, an aquarium attendant, had had occupational contact, in Europe, with a bottle-nosed dolphin (Tursiops truncatus). The dolphin, when caught in the Bay of Biscay, had granulomas of the skin: yeast-like organisms, morphologically indistinguishable from Loboa loboi, were found in a biopsy specimen. Identical organisms were present in the attendant's skin lesion and supratrochlear lymph node.

American histoplasmosis, characterized by its small parasitological forms, is a visceral mycosis which though rare, has already been reported in Zaïre. A new case, in a girl of 4 years is reported with bad general condition, fever and general reaction of the reticulo-endothelial system. The microscopic aspects of the yeast are given. A treatment with ketoconazole proved rapidly effective and the patient had apparently recovered when she died of measles which have in Africa and specially in fragile patients a particular severity.

The medium described is a simple yeast extract broth capable of growing large number of Legionella neumophila, the causative organism of Legionnaires disease. Filtration was chosen as a means of sterilization, since medium that was autoclaved did not support growth without the presence of Norite A. The filtered medium gave rapid cell growth and maintained the initial antigen production. The observed generation time was 99 min with a maximum cell population of 2 X 10(2) COLONY-FORMING UNITS PER ML IN APPROXIMATELY 40 H.

Study of the neotype culture of Exophiala werneckii (Cladosporium werneckii), as well as additional isolates, has shown that the yeast-like and hyphal conidiogenous cells are annellides. In a series of 39 cases of cutaneous sporotrichosis, 37 were of the localized cutaneous type and only 2 of the lymphangitic variety. Fungi were identified histologically in every case, most often as asteroid bodies which were found in all but 3 lesions. Cultures were occasionally negative even though asteroids or yeast-like forms were present in tissue sections. A histological diagnosis should be possible in all cases if a sufficient number of serial sections are examined by H & E and the PAS method.

Myxobacters were found to be common inhabitants of the arid soils from the Monterrey, Nuevo Leon, Mexico, area. Thirteen species of the genera Myxococcus, Archangium, Cystobacter, Stigmatella, Polyangium, and Chondromyces were isolated on a mineral salts agar supplemented with bakers' yeast and filter paper. Greater species diversity per soil sample was found in the region receiving 400 to 800 mm of annual rainfall as compared with soils from an area having only 200 to 400 mm of rainfall.

C57BL/6J mice rendered hypersensitive to Blastomyces dermatitidis were protected from the lethal effects of a blastomyces infection. This protection was observed following a lethal intraperitoneal challenge with viable cells 15 days after subcutaneous inoculation with 3.9 x 10(4) viable cells. Delayed hypersensitivity was induced in C57 mice by two injections of Merthiolate-killed cells in adjuvant or by a single injection of viable cells. Development of hypersensitivity was determined at appropriate intervals by footpad injection with killed yeast cells.

Production of precipitating and complement-fixing antibody in rabbits and other animals was induced by immunization with live yeast-phase cells of Histoplasma capsulatum. Results of studies of polysaccharide antigens from three strains of H. capsulatum, by quantitative complement-fixation with human and rabbit antisera, strongly suggest the presence of type specificity. The variations of titer during 11 weeks in one patient with histoplasmosis and the variations of titer among a group of patients with histoplasmosis were studied by use of quantitative complement-fixation tests.
