[Category loudness scaling to evaluate sound perception in cochlear and retro-cochlear lesions].

Category loudness scaling was used to investigate the loudness perception of 31 patients with a cochlear hearing loss (Group 1) by comparing the results with those found in 15 patients with retro-cochlear hearing loss caused by an acoustic neuroma (Group 2). Narrow-band noise signals at four different frequencies (0.5 to 4.0 kHz) were used. In the cochlear hearing-impaired subjects the slopes of the level-loudness functions tended to increase with increasing hearing loss, indicating positive recruitment, whereas the much shallower slopes associated with retro-cochlear lesions were presumed to

Perceptual consequences of the interactions between spontaneous otoacoustic emissions and external tones. I. Monaural diplacusis and aftertones.

Research into monaural diplacusis has led to the concept of idiotones (tone-like stimuli of cochlea origin). Spontaneous otoacoustic emissions (SOAEs) are tone-like stimuli generated by the cochlea and detected in the ear canal. In diplacusis, the existence of idiotones is inferred from disturbances of the perception of single tones. Spontaneous otoacoustic emissions are measured by placing a small microphone at the entrance to the ear canal. Many of the puzzling properties of the hypothesized idiotones are consistent with measurements of the interaction of SOAEs with external tones. The inter

Cerebrospinal fluid leak management following cerebellopontine angle surgery.

OBJECTIVE: Postoperative cerebrospinal fluid leak (CSF) is a serious complication of the cerebellopontine angle surgery. In the current literature, CSF leak rates vary from 8.1 to 20%. The various options in managing this troublesome complication include conservative treatment or invasive surgical repair. The focus of this report is to retrospectively analyze our experience on this specific topic reviewing the incidence of CSF leak and the outcomes of its treatment in a group of patients who underwent surgery for different pathology of the cerebellopontine angle. METHOD: Eighty-five patients

Sound damage and gentamicin treatment produce different patterns of damage to the efferent innervation of the chick cochlea.

Both sound exposure and gentamicin treatment cause damage to sensory hair cells in the peripheral chick auditory organ, the basilar papilla. This induces a regeneration response which replaces hair cells and restores auditory function. Since functional recovery requires the re-establishment of connections between regenerated hair cells and the central nervous system, we have investigated the effects of sound damage and gentamicin treatment on the neuronal elements within the cochlea. Whole-mount preparations of basilar papillae were labeled with phalloidin to label the actin cytoskeleton and a

Quantitative evaluation of cochlear neurons and computer-aided three-dimensional reconstruction of spiral ganglion cells in humans with a peripheral loss of nerve fibres.

Quantitative data on human cochlear neuronal elements were collected from various regions in five patients with high-tone hearing loss due to presbycusis and in two patients with normal hearing. The number of nerve fibers was assessed in the spiral lamina and in the inner acoustic meatus together with counts of spiral ganglion cells. The results show that the number of neurons decreased peripherally, i.e., with increasing distance from the central nervous system in patients with high-tone hearing loss due to presbycusis. In two patients with normal hearing no significant difference in the numb

Effects of botulinum toxin on vocal tract steadiness in patients with spasmodic dysphonia.

Since laryngeal botulinum toxin (BTX) injections have become the treatment of choice for spasmodic dysphonia, the purpose of this study was to examine its effects on the stability of the upper vocal tract as compared to the effects on glottic stability. Two different acoustic methods were used to analyze voice samples from 16 patients with adductor-type spasmodic dysphonias before and after BTX therapy and from a normal control group. Independent acoustic analyses were used to determine laryngeal and upper vocal tract stability. The results showed significantly higher values for the standard d

[Facial nerve protection during surgery for congenital malformation of the external and middle ear (review of 519 cases)].

The prevention of facial nerve injury in otoplasty for ear malformation is important. This paper analysed 519 cases of ear malformation collected during 10 years from 1985 to 1995. The hearing of 428 cases was improved, of which the hearing of 221 cases did recover to available level. A long-term follow-up of 198 cases showed that 152 cases had kept the same hearing level as that immediately after surgery. In 130 cases with single middle ear malformation the malformation rate of facial nerve was 60.8%(79/130), and that for chorda tympani 5.4% (7/130). In 75 cases of middle ear malformation wit

Cranial and cerebral-ventricular landmarks for accurate stereotaxic approach to hypothalamic nuclei in the goat brain.

This paper describes a new stereotaxic coordinate system for the goat brain based on cranial landmarks. An osseous triangle (a-b-c) formed by the point of junction of the crista galli with the caudal ventral part of the frontal sinus septum (a), the external occipital protuberance (b), and the midsagittal projection of the external acoustic meatus (c), was measured using lateral radiographs and ventriculographs and showed a constant mathematical relation. The rostral angle was 20.3 +/- 1.0 (mean +/- SD) degree in 23 goats studied regardless of their cranial size which varied considerably from

[Ultrasonics in the diagnosis of hyperplastic cholecystoses of focal and segmental extension type].

The authors describe the sonographic (US) patterns of hyperplastic cholecystoses observed from January 1983 to April 1987 - 39 cases of focal extension and 12 of segmental extension--and confirm the higher sensibility of US versus oral cholecystography. Sonography (SG) allows a straight visualization of the gallbladder wall and its lesions, both in case of limited thickening of the wall (focal cholecystosis) and in case of more extensive thickening (segmental cholecystosis). To cholecystographic findings of focal lesions, SG gives additional information, adding a fundamental diagnostic element

Sex hormone receptors in intracranial tumours and normal brain.

Fifty-four intracranial neoplasms (29 meningiomas, 16 gliomas, seven acoustic neuromas and two cerebral metastases) and nine specimens of normal brain were evaluated for specific progesterone and oestrogen receptor proteins using a dextran-coated charcoal assay and Scatchard plot analysis. Sixteen meningiomas (55%) were progesterone receptor (PgR) positive (median 52; mean 120; range 10-486 fmol mg-1 cytosol protein), whilst all were oestrogen receptor negative (ER-). Two (28%) of the acoustic neuromas contained small amounts of PgR protein, but all seven were ER-. None of the gliomas, cerebra

Auditory brain stem responses in the mentally retarded: audiometric correlates.

In previous reports we have suggested that the auditory brain-stem responses (ABRs) of adults with Down's syndrome exhibit two abnormalities unique to that population: a shortened central conduction time and an insensitivity of peak latencies to increases in stimulation rate. The current experiment assessed the possibility that these abnormalities were caused by hearing deficit rather than central auditory dysfunction. The ABRs of a group of adults with Down's syndrome were compared with those of a group of non-Down retarded and a control group of nonretarded adults. An audiometric examination

Baclofen reduces tone-evoked activity of cochlear nucleus neurons.

Recent evidence suggests that an excitant amino acid may be a neurotransmitter at acoustic nerve synapses in cochlear nucleus (CN). Release of excitant amino acids is reportedly reduced by baclofen, a lipophilic GABA-mimetic used to treat the spasticity of multiple sclerosis and spinal injury. Microiontophoresis of (-)baclofen suppressed spontaneous and tone-evoked activity in CN neurons. GABA inhibited the responses of most neurons responsive to (-)baclofen. However, iontophoresis of these two substances onto the same CN neuron resulted in dramatic differences in time course to maximum effect

Some ECMR properties in relation to other signals from the auditory periphery.

Some basic characteristics of monkey and human acoustic emissions are reviewed and some new data presented. These characteristics are discussed in relation to the sensorineural output of the cochlea. Input--output functions and the frequency dispersal in the waveform of acoustic emissions (AE) from monkeys are described. New findings include changes in the human AE during trains of clicks and sustained suppression of the AE after short bursts of noise of moderate intensity. The similarly of click-evoked AE latencies and whole-nerve action potential (AP) latencies for low stimulus level tonebur

Generative AI-driven synthetic media risks in digital health: implications for telemedicine and teledentistry.

Advances in diffusion-based and neural rendering architectures have enabled the creation of synthetic audiovisual content that closely replicates natural facial dynamics, speech production, and environmental context. These developments pose a growing risk to clinical medicine and dentistry, where authentic audiovisual data support remote clinical assessment, communication, and medico-legal documentation. This study introduces an interpretable multimodal framework for deepfake detection that integrates visual, acoustic, and cross-modal coherence features, with decision thresholds derived exclus

AI-powered speech analysis for early prediction of Parkinson's disease:: [Quantitative hypokinetic dysarthria as a biomarker for early Parkinson's detection: A machine learning approach].

OBJECTIVE: Parkinson's disease (PD) is a progressive neurodegenerative disorder in which early diagnosis remains difficult due to subtle and heterogeneous symptoms. Speech impairments, particularly hypokinetic dysarthria, often appear early and offer promise as non-invasive biomarkers for detection. This study investigates whether quantitative speech-derived acoustic features can serve as reliable, non-invasive biomarkers for early detection of PD by analysing dysphonia measures extracted from sustained phonation recordings. METHOD: A two-pronged analytical framework was used. First, explorat
