Adolescent experiences of mistreatment during childbirth in health facilities: secondary analysis of a community-based survey in four countries.

INTRODUCTION: Pregnancy and childbearing among adolescents-especially younger adolescents-is associated with health complications and lost opportunities for education and personal development. In addition to established challenges adolescents and young women face in sexual and reproductive healthcare, evidence suggests that they also face mistreatment during childbirth. METHODS: This is a secondary analysis of the WHO study 'How women are treated during facility-based childbirth' cross-sectional community survey in Ghana, Guinea, Myanmar and Nigeria. We used descriptive analysis to assess exp

The transition from pediatric to adult care for youth with epilepsy: Basic biological, sociological, and psychological issues.

Transition from pediatric to adult health care for adolescents with epilepsy is challenging for the patient, family, and health care workers. This paper is the first of three that summarize the main findings from the 2nd Symposium on Transition in Epilepsies, held in Paris from June 14-25, 2016. In this paper we describe five basic themes that have an important effect on transition. First, there are important brain changes in adolescence that leave an imbalance between risk taking and pleasure seeking behaviors and frontal executive function compared with adults. Second, puberty is a major cha

A European Society of Paediatric and Neonatal Intensive Care (ESPNIC) survey of European critical care management of young people.

UNLABELLED: Adolescents have specific healthcare needs distinct from adults or younger children secondary to anatomical, physiological and socio-behavioural differences. Healthcare providers have been slow to address this, leading the UK Department of Health (2011) to publish 'You're Welcome' quality criteria for services for young people. (In the UK, the term young people is preferred to adolescent.) These generic criteria poorly fit the critical care environment, omitting key issues whilst insisting upon irrelevant standards. But as young people are infrequent patients for any individual uni

"Friending" teens: systematic review of social media in adolescent and young adult health care.

BACKGROUND: Social media has emerged as a potentially powerful medium for communication with adolescents and young adults around their health choices. OBJECTIVE: The goal of this systematic review is to identify research on the use of social media for interacting with adolescents and young adults in order to achieve positive health outcomes. METHODS: A MEDLINE/PubMed electronic database search was performed between January 1, 2002 and October 1, 2013, using terms to identify peer-reviewed research in which social media and other Web 2.0 technologies were an important feature. We used a syste

Height and body-mass index trajectories of school-aged children and adolescents from 1985 to 2019 in 200 countries and territories: a pooled analysis of 2181 population-based studies with 65 million participants.

BACKGROUND: Comparable global data on health and nutrition of school-aged children and adolescents are scarce. We aimed to estimate age trajectories and time trends in mean height and mean body-mass index (BMI), which measures weight gain beyond what is expected from height gain, for school-aged children and adolescents. METHODS: For this pooled analysis, we used a database of cardiometabolic risk factors collated by the Non-Communicable Disease Risk Factor Collaboration. We applied a Bayesian hierarchical model to estimate trends from 1985 to 2019 in mean height and mean BMI in 1-year age gr

A multivariate multilevel analysis of youth motor competence. The Peruvian Health and Optimist Growth Study.

We use a multivariate multilevel model to study the links between physical fitness (PF) and gross motor coordination (GMC) and investigate the influence of predictors affecting their levels across age. We sampled 7918 Peruvians, aged 6-15 years, from sea-level, Amazon region and high-altitude. Composite markers of GMC and PF were derived (GMCz and PFz , respectively). BMI, biological maturation, and stunting were assessed. School characteristics were obtained via an objective audit. School contexts explained 35% of the associations between PFz and GMCz , whereas children's characteristics expl

Longitudinal associations among posttraumatic stress symptoms, intolerance of uncertainty and internet gaming disorder symptoms among disaster-exposed adolescents.

Disaster-exposed adolescents face elevated risks for developing posttraumatic stress symptoms (PTSS) and maladaptive coping behaviors, including internet gaming disorder (IGD). However, the longitudinal mechanisms underlying these relationships remain unclear, particularly the role of intolerance of uncertainty (IU) as a potential transdiagnostic vulnerability factor. This longitudinal study examined 403 disaster-exposed adolescents (Mage = 13.33, SD = 0.52; 49.6% girls) across three waves. PTSS, IU, and IGD symptoms were assessed at three time points, with a six-month interval between each as

Soy Intake During Childhood and/or Adolescence and Adult Breast Cancer: An Examination of the Early Soy Intake Hypothesis.

Breast cancer is one of the leading causes of cancer incidence and mortality in many countries worldwide although there is considerable geographic variation. Diet is thought to impact risk of developing breast cancer but identifying specific dietary factors involved in the etiology of this disease has proven difficult. The two primary factors that initially led to an interest in soy are the historically low breast cancer incidence and mortality rates in Japan and the uniquely high concentration of isoflavones in soybeans and foods derived from this legume. Isoflavones bind to both estrogen rec

Evaluation of the effectiveness of novel oral hygiene aids in the prevention of gingival diseases in children and adolescents with special healthcare needs - A systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Due to a lack of manual dexterity, impaired cognitive and general development, and awareness of caregivers, special children are not able to maintain good oral health. This leads to the development of dental plaque, gingival inflammation, and further periodontal diseases. It is, thus, necessary for dentists and caregivers to understand which of oral hygiene aids can be best suited for a child with special healthcare needs. The aim of this review is to evaluate the most efficacious oral healthcare aids in children and adolescents with special healthcare needs. MATERIALS AND METHODS

Early life high fructose impairs microglial phagocytosis and neurodevelopment.

Despite the success of fructose as a low-cost food additive, epidemiological evidence suggests that high fructose consumption during pregnancy or adolescence is associated with disrupted neurodevelopment1-3. An essential step in appropriate mammalian neurodevelopment is the phagocytic elimination of newly formed neurons by microglia, the resident professional phagocyte of the central nervous system4. Whether high fructose consumption in early life affects microglial phagocytosis and whether this directly affects neurodevelopment remains unknown. Here we show that offspring born to female mice

First Evidence-Based Guideline for Interventions in FASD.

Prenatal alcohol exposure causes disruptions in brain development. The resulting disorder, fetal alcohol spectrum disorder (FASD), cannot be cured, but interventions can help improve the daily functioning of affected children and adolescents and the quality of life for the entire family. The aim of the German guideline version 2024 is to provide validated and evidence-based recommendations on interventions for children and adolescents with FASD.We searched for international guidelines and performed a systematic literature review and a hand search to identify literature (published 2012-2022) on

Resilience as a moderator of the relationship between stress and different symptom dimensions of depression in adolescents with a history of childhood maltreatment: A multi-wave longitudinal study.

BACKGROUND: Although childhood maltreatment is a key risk factor for the development of psychopathology including depression in later life, not all children who have been maltreated subsequently become depressed. OBJECTIVE: The study aimed to examine the potentially moderating influence of resilience on the relationship between daily stress and different symptom dimensions of depression in adolescents with a history of childhood maltreatment. PARTICIPANTS AND SETTING: A sample of students (n = 999) aged 12-16 years from middle schools with a history of childhood maltreatment participated in

Effects of developmental alcohol exposure on cortical multisensory integration.

Fetal alcohol spectrum disorder (FASD) is one of the most common causes of mental disabilities in the world with a prevalence of 1%-6% of all births. Sensory processing deficits and cognitive problems are a major feature in this condition. Because developmental alcohol exposure can impair neuronal plasticity, and neuronal plasticity is crucial for the establishment of neuronal circuits in sensory areas, we predicted that exposure to alcohol during the third trimester equivalent of human gestation would disrupt the development of multisensory integration (MSI) in the rostral portion of the post

A rare case of pyosalpinx in adolescent girl with Hirschsprung's disease who underwent transvaginal ultrasound-guided drainage.

BACKGROUND: Hydrosalpinx and pyosalpinx are rare gynecologic problems during adolescence, especially in girls without a history of sexual activity. They are even rarer in women with Hirschsprung's disease (HD). We herein report a case of pyosalpinx in an adolescent girl with HD treated by transvaginal ultrasound-guided drainage. CASE PRESENTATION: The present patient was a 12-year-old girl (weight 83 kg; height 159 cm; body mass index 32.8 kg/m2). She had undergone five laparotomies for long-segment HD by 2 years. Her menarche had occurred at 10 years. She was admitted with lower abdominal an

Obstructive sleep apnea and anatomical structures of the nasomaxillary complex in adolescents.

The aim of the present study was to reveal the associations between skeletal and soft tissue features of the nasomaxillary complex and development and severity of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) in adolescents. A total of 100 adolescents (mean age, 14.9 ± 1.4 years; age range, 13-17 years) were enrolled. All participants underwent full-night polysomnography and had an assessment of size and position of the tongue, tonsillar size, body mass index (BMI), and circumference of the waist, neck, and hip. The skeletal features of the nasomaxillary complex, including the zygomatic arch width, nasal cavi

Frontal EEG alpha-delta ratio and social anxiety across early adolescence.

Although the mean age of onset of social anxiety disorder (SAD) is during adolescence, we know relatively little about the neurodevelopmental correlates of subsyndromal social anxiety in early adolescence before SAD manifests. Here we examined frontal EEG alpha/delta ratio (a putative proxy of brain maturation) in relation social anxiety symptoms across early adolescence. Resting regional EEG spectral power measures were collected continuously for 4 min (2 min eyes-open, 2 min eyes-closed) in slow (i.e., delta) and fast (i.e., alpha) frequencies at Time 1, and self-reported social anxiety meas

Klinefelter syndrome: going beyond the diagnosis.

Although Klinefelter syndrome (KS) is common, it is rarely recognised in childhood, sometimes being identified with speech or developmental delay or incidental antenatal diagnosis. The only regular feature is testicular dysfunction. Postnatal gonadotropin surge (mini-puberty) may be lower, but treatment with testosterone needs prospective studies. The onset of puberty is at the normal age and biochemical hypogonadism does not typically occur until late puberty. Testosterone supplementation can be considered then or earlier for clinical hypogonadism. The size at birth is normal, but growth acce

Youth Problem Drinking: The Role of Parental and Familial Relationships.

BACKGROUND: Alcohol use continues to be an important global public health problem and adolescence seems to be a decisive period of time in the development of drinking patterns into adulthood. While most studies concentrate on frequency and amount of alcohol, fewer studies address "problem drinking." Gathering information on youth's alcohol-related behavioral consequences is especially important. OBJECTIVES: Current research focuses on gathering information on the background of problem drinking behavior with special attention to parental/familial relationships. METHODS: The survey was conduct
