The Lines of Argumentation of Alcohol, Drug and Gambling Policies in Finland.

AIMS: Alcohol, drugs and gambling are subject to governmental control policies and regulation. We have investigated how supporters of regulation/criminality of drug use and liberals advocating more lenient control provide arguments on the governmental control policies and regulation on addiction policies. METHODS: We organized three experiments in Helsinki, Finland, in 2023 on the argumentation on alcohol, drug and gambling policies. Altogether, 98 lay persons, mainly students at the University of Helsinki, participated in the experiments. As a method, we employed the imitation game, which ca

Coming to Terms with the Alcohol-Cancer Link: A Work in Progress.

Although substantial evidence links even moderate levels of alcohol consumption to breast, colorectal, and five other cancers, awareness in the US population of this evidence is suboptimal. That lack of awareness-complemented by industry resistance to policy change-has hindered efforts to address alcohol use in cancer prevention. The article by Hawk and colleagues in this issue reports that 86% of surveyed NCI-Designated Cancer Centers believe they have an obligation to educate the public about the cancer harms associated with alcohol, a promising finding given that people trust clinicians mor

Sex-Based Mechanisms of Stress-Induced Alcohol-Seeking.

Sex differences in stress-induced alcohol-seeking are well documented. The overarching goal of this study is to examine how sex may moderate the relationship between depression and anxiety symptoms and stress-induced alcohol-seeking and to identify mechanisms of this relationship. We explore subjective alcohol responses and the resting-state functional connectivity of the amygdala and the hippocampus, regions implicated in anxiety and depression, as potential sex-dependent mediators. This secondary analysis draws from a recently published trial of 84 adults aged 21 to 55 (54.8% female, mean ag

Parental Beliefs Are Associated with Youth Response to Alcohol Intervention.

OBJECTIVE: Youth with chronic medical conditions (YCMC) are at increased risk of experiencing alcohol-related health consequences compared to healthy peers. Targeting influential parent beliefs and behaviors may help address YCMC alcohol use. METHOD: This study evaluated YCMC and parent surveys (n = 251) collected during a randomized controlled trial at an urban academic pediatric hospital evaluating "Take Good Care," a psychoeducational intervention targeting YCMC alcohol use. Baseline and follow-up YCMC surveys assessed alcohol use, tolerance of alcohol-related risks, and knowledge of alcoh

Thalamostriatal circuit as a therapeutic target of alcohol use disorder.

Alcohol Use Disorder (AUD) is a chronic neuropsychiatric disorder characterized by high relapse rates and limited treatment efficacy. In this review, we focus on evidence that chronic alcohol exposure disrupts intralaminar thalamic input to the dorsal striatum, particularly Pf/CM-Pf-related regulation of dorsomedial striatal cholinergic interneurons, a pathway implicated in reversal learning and cognitive flexibility in preclinical models. We further distinguish this circuit from PVT-centered thalamic pathways that influence alcohol-related reward, aversion, and relapse-like behavior through v

Reorganization of brain-autonomic integration in alcohol use disorder.

Aberrant resting-state functional connectivity (rsFC) within neurocognitive networks is a hallmark of alcohol use disorder (AUD). However, the spatial architecture of the central autonomic network (CAN)-the vital neural substrate governing cardiovascular and homeostatic control-and its association with heart rate variability (HRV) remain poorly characterised. We investigated group differences in CAN-related rsFC and its statistical relationship with HRV metrics in 112 young adults (54 AUD, 58 healthy controls [HC]) using resting-state fMRI and separate, HRV assessments. Seed-based analyses tar

Ethnicity, Gender, and Perceptions of Alcohol Users: A Vignette Study.

OBJECTIVE: Alcohol use is stigmatized in many Middle Eastern communities. Despite this, 45% of Arab Americans report drinking alcohol, suggesting that Arab Americans who choose to drink may face negative judgments. Currently, there is a dearth of research on the degree to which drinker and observer ethnicity affect perceptions of individuals who drink. Moreover, existing research on stigma and substance use has relied on surveys, which can be affected by social desirability bias. To address these issues, the current study used vignettes to examine how participant ethnicity (Middle Eastern vs.

Age- and alcohol-related differences in adolescent neurometabolite levels.

BACKGROUND: Adolescence is a critical period for neurometabolite maturation as well as the initiation of alcohol use. However, despite its importance for long-term neurodevelopmental outcomes, the impact of alcohol use during adolescence on neurometabolites remains understudied. METHODS: We conducted an exploratory study using 3T proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy (1H-MRS) to examine age- and alcohol-related associations with six neurometabolites in the dorsal anterior cingulate cortex (dACC) that are involved in key neural functions: glutamate + glutamine (Glx), GABA plus macromolecules

Semaglutide and Alcohol use Disorder: Breaking Free of Addiction?

Alcohol use disorder (AUD) is a chronically relapsing disorder characterized by a compulsive alcohol drinking pattern, loss of control over intake, and the emergence of negative emotional states promoting alcohol dependence. It is unquestionably a major public health issue worldwide and a highly stigmatized condition. Unfortunately, AUD remains untreated in a significant number of adults. Since the approval of disulfiram by the FDA in 1951, only two medications (naltrexone and acamprosate) have gained subsequent FDA approval for this disorder. However, even when these medications are administe

Base-Promoted Conversion of Propargylic Alcohols to 1,3-Enynes.

Under acidic conditions, propargylic alcohols undergo Meyer-Schuster or Rupe rearrangements to afford two isomeric α,β-unsaturated ketones. Herein, we disclose a mechanistically distinct base-mediated regioselective conversion of TMS ethers of propargylic alcohols to 1,3-enynes in high yields with broad functional-group compatibility. Alternatively, trapping of the in situ-generated lithium acetylide with electrophiles enables access to functionalized internal 1,3-enynes. Owing to the ready accessibility of propargylic alcohols, this method provides a practical and attractive entry to syntheti

Unsaturated Copper Sites for Selective Electroreduction of CO to Alcohol.

Electrochemical reduction reaction of carbon monoxide (CORR) has been extensively studied due to its high selectivity for producing multi-carbon (C2+) products. However, the selective production of alcohol-an highly valuable class of chemical feedstock-remains unsatisfactory, hindered by poor selectivity and low energy efficiency. Here, we report that low coordination (unsaturated) Cu sites generated through the reduction of Cu2O catalysts with ammonia increases the binding energy of CO and enable the pre-protonation of *CO to *CHO, as opposed to CO-CO coupling. This modification enables a shi

Alcohol Consumption Index as a Novel Risk Marker for Hypertension.

OBJECTIVES: Habitual alcohol consumption is a risk factor for hypertension. The alcohol consumption index (ACI), which is defined as the product of mean corpuscular volume, gamma-glutamyl transferase, and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol levels in blood, has been proposed as a biomarker for estimating individual alcohol consumption. The aim of this study was to clarify the relationship between ACI and blood pressure. METHODS: The participants were an occupational cohort consisting of 6 655 men (median age: 51 years). A retrospective cohort study was performed to compare variables at basel

Prenatal Alcohol Exposure and Dysmorphic Features in Adults at Midlife.

BACKGROUND: Dysmorphology examinations have established that fetal alcohol spectrum disorders (FASD) are associated with characteristic physical features from infancy through adolescence. As individuals mature into young adulthood and beyond, the aging process may attenuate characteristic features over time. The purpose of this study was to evaluate FASD-related dysmorphology at midlife. METHODS: Subjects (N = 192) were recruited from two longitudinal cohorts and from the general community (Mage = 39.5 years, SDage = 8.1 years). A majority (n = 132, 68.8%) had an FASD or well-documented prena

Transformation of alkyl and aryl halides into alcohols, thiols and thiophenols.

Alcohols and thiols are key functionalities which are found in a wide variety of both natural and synthetic bioactive compounds. Additionally, they provide access to an array of other major functional groups, such as aldehydes, ketones, ethers, disulfides and sulfonamides to name but a few. The direct conversion of alkyl and aryl halides constitutes a useful and efficient means of preparing alcohols, thiols and thiophenols. This review summarises the different approaches that have been reported in the literature up to 2026, and includes the application of modern synthetic methods, such as elec
