Immune reactions following systemic immunization prior or subsequent to intrastriatal transplantation of allogeneic mesencephalic tissue in adult rats.

We have previously found that dissociated mesencephalic tissue, which differs from the host at both major histocompatibility complex and non-major histocompatibility complex gene loci, can survive stereotaxic transplantation to the striatum of adult rats. We have now studied the outcome of intrastriatal neural allografts in rats that were systemically immunized by an orthotopic skin allograft either prior or subsequent to intracerebral implantation surgery. Dissociated mesencephalic tissue from Lewis rat embryos was stereotaxically injected into the dopamine-depleted striatum of hemi-parkinson

Boron-Doped Nano Hydroxyapatite Grafts for Bone Regeneration in Rat Mandibular Defects.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the potential effects of boron-doped nano hydroxyapatite grafts on craniofacial bone regeneration in critical bone defects in the mandibular corpus of rats, in terms of scintigraphic and histopathological aspects. Forty Wistar albino rats, with an average weight of 200-220 g, aged 16-18 weeks, and all male, were used in the study. The rats were randomly assigned to five groups, each containing 8 rats, as follows: group C1 (no procedure applied to the mandible), group C2 (surgical defect created in the mandible but no treatment applied), group nHA (nano hyd

Evaluating larvicidal, ovicidal and growth inhibiting activity of five medicinal plant extracts on Culex pipiens (Diptera: Culicidae), the West Nile virus vector.

Mosquitoes, one of the deadliest animals on the planet, cause millions of fatalities each year by transmitting several human illnesses. Synthetic pesticides were previously used to prevent the spread of diseases by mosquitoes, which was effective in protecting humans but caused serious human health problems, environmental damage, and developed mosquito pesticide resistance. This research focuses on exploring new, more effective, safer, and environmentally friendly compounds to improve mosquito vector management. Phytochemicals are possible biological agents for controlling pests and many are t

The Effect of Meditation, Mindfulness, and Yoga in Patients with Rheumatoid Arthritis.

OBJECTIVES: Mind-body therapies (MBTs), including meditation, yoga, and mindfulness, create an interaction between the mind and body to enhance health. MBTs are perceived by both patients and healthcare professionals as valuable in the management of rheumatoid arthritis (RA), but the extent of this contribution is unclear, as are the patient subgroups who benefit most from MBTs. Therefore, this systematic literature review investigates the effects of meditation, mindfulness, and yoga in patients with RA. METHODS: We searched four databases (PubMed, Embase, Web of Science (core collection, Chi

Pharmacological and endocrinological characterisation of stress-induced hyperthermia in singly housed mice using classical and candidate anxiolytics (LY314582, MPEP and NKP608).

The stress-induced hyperthermia test is a paradigm developed several years ago to model the expression of autonomic hyperactivity in anxiety. Whereas in the classical stress-induced hyperthermia, cohort removal was used, in a recently described modification of the stress-induced hyperthermia model singly housed mice rather than groups of mice were used. The modification of this model can be summarized as follows: rectal temperature is recorded in singly housed animals at two consecutive time-points (T1 and T2) which are interspaced by a defined time-interval (15 min). Since the value at the se

CD44: structure, function, and association with the malignant process.

CD44 is a ubiquitous multistructural and multifunctional cells surface adhesion molecule involved in cell-cell and cell-matrix interactions. Twenty exons are involved in the genomic organization of this molecule. The first five and the last 5 exons are constant, whereas the 10 exons located between these regions are subjected to alternative splicing, resulting in the generation of a variable region. Differential utilization of the 10 variable region exons, as well as variations in N-glycosylation, O-glycosylation, and glycosaminoglycanation (by heparan sulfate or chondroitin sulfate), generate

PnPP-19 Peptide Restores Erectile Function in Hypertensive and Diabetic Animals Through Intravenous and Topical Administration.

INTRODUCTION: With the aim of overcoming the high toxicity of PnTx2-6 (or δ-CNTX-Pn2a), a toxin from the venom of the armed spider (Phoneutria nigriventer), the 19-aminoacid peptide, PnPP-19 (P nigriventer potentiator peptide), was synthesized based on molecular modeling studies of PnTx2-6. PnPP-19 improved the erectile function of normotensive rats and mice, without eliciting side effects, and no signs of toxicity were observed. In addition, PnPP-19 was able to potentiate the effect of sildenafil. AIM: To evaluate the efficacy of PnPP-19 in hypertensive and diabetic mouse/rat models in resto

Links between energy budgets, somatic condition, and life history reveal heterogeneous energy management tactics in a group-living mesocarnivore.

BACKGROUND: Optimal management of voluntary energy expenditure is crucial to the survival and reproductive success of wild animals. Nevertheless, a growing appreciation of inter-individual variation in the internal state driving movement suggests that individuals may follow different, yet equally optimal tactics under the same environmental conditions. However, few studies in wild populations have investigated the occurrence and demographic context of different contemporaneous energetic expenditure tactics. Here, we explore this neglected aspect of energy budgeting in order to determine the ef

Blanching Pre-Treatment Promotes High Yields, Bioactive Compounds, Antioxidants, Enzyme Inactivation and Antibacterial Activity of 'Wonderful' Pomegranate Peel Extracts at Three Different Harvest Maturities.

'Wonderful' pomegranate (Punica granatum L.) peel contains a wide range of phytochemicals including vitamins, dietary fibre, phenolic compounds, and antioxidant properties. Yet, it is often used as animal feed or discarded in landfills, which is not the best eco-friendly way to utilize this phenolic-rich bioresource. Finding novel ways of utilizing pomegranate peel waste could prove a more profitable and eco-friendlier alternative that is far more beneficial to the economy. Adding a blanching pre-treatment step at optimal conditions prior to processing of pomegranate peel aids in the inactivat

Air versus oxygen for resuscitation of infants at birth.

BACKGROUND: 100% oxygen is the commonly recommended gas for the resuscitation of infants at birth. There is growing evidence from both animal and human studies that room air is as effective as 100% oxygen and that 100% oxygen may have adverse effects on breathing physiology and cerebral circulation. There is also the theoretical risk of tissue damage due to free oxygen radicals when 100% oxygen is given. The use of room air has, therefore, been suggested as a safer and possibly more effective alternative. OBJECTIVES: In newborn infants requiring resuscitation, does the use of room air reduce

Exposure to Secondhand Smoke Impairs Fracture Healing in Rats.

BACKGROUND: Nonsmokers may be affected by environmental tobacco smoke (secondhand smoke), but the effects of such exposure on fracture healing have not been well studied. QUESTIONS/PURPOSES: To explore the possible effects of passive inhalation of tobacco smoke on the healing of a diaphyseal fracture in femurs of rats. We hypothesized that secondhand exposure to tobacco smoke adversely affects fracture healing. METHODS: A mid-diaphyseal fracture was created in the femur of 41 female Wistar rats and fixed with an intramedullary metallic pin; 14 rats were excluded (nine for inadequate fracture

Discovery, Design, and Evaluation of Nanomolar to Picomolar Inhibitors of Human Pancreatic α-Amylase for Control of Postprandial Blood Glucose Levels.

Type 2 diabetes is a disease that is rapidly expanding across the world with global cases quadrupling since 1990 and now comprising over 800 million people, the majority of whom are in low- and middle-income countries (Zhou et al.Lancet2024, 404, 2077-2093.). The poor control of blood glucose levels that lies at the heart of this disease leads to debilitating complications such as renal failure, vision loss, and amputations and has associations with heart disease and a host of other conditions. Oral drugs that control blood glucose levels and can slow disease progression and reduce the risks a

The Impact of Exercise Capacity on Complex Neuromuscular Adaptations: A Narrative Review Based on a Rat Model System Selectively Bred for Low and High Response to Training.

There is scientific evidence that supports the association between aerobic exercise capacity and the risk of developing complex metabolic diseases. The factors that determine aerobic capacity can be categorized into two groups: intrinsic and extrinsic components. While exercise capacity is influenced by both the intrinsic fitness levels of an organism and the extrinsic factors that emerge during training, physiological adaptations to exercise training can differ significantly among individuals. The interplay between intrinsic and acquired exercise capacities represents an obstacle to recognizi

Pergularia daemia hydro-ethanolic extract protects against pentylenetetrazole kindling-induced seizures, oxidative stress, and neuroinflammation in mice.

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: Current antiepileptic drugs fail to control approximately 30% of epilepsies. Therefore, there is a need to develop more effective antiepileptic drugs, and medicinal plants provide an attractive source for new compounds. Pergularia daemia (Asclepiadaceae) is used in Cameroon traditional medicine to treat stroke, anemia, inflammation, and epilepsy. Recently, traditional healers claim that an hydro-ethanolic extract of the roots of P. daemia is more effective than an aqueous extract on refractory seizures. AIM OF THE STUDY: The antiepileptic effect of P. daemia hy

Fighting eimeriosis by using the anti-eimerial and anti-apoptotic properties of rhatany root extract.

BACKGROUND: Over the last decade, extensive use of coccidiostats to treat and control Eimeria infection has developed drug resistance, prompting the search for new alternative therapies. Rhatany is proven to have various pharmacological properties. OBJECTIVE: The present study aimed to in vitro and in vivo evaluate the effect of Rhatany roots extract (RRE) as an anti-eimerial and anti-apoptotic agent against murine eimeriosis induced by Eimeria papillata. METHODS: Phytochemical screening by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry analysis (GC-MS) was used to detect active compounds in RRE. In v

A randomized, controlled trial comparing long-term cosmetic outcomes of traumatic pediatric lacerations repaired with absorbable plain gut versus nonabsorbable nylon sutures.

OBJECTIVES: To show that the use of absorbable sutures in pediatric traumatic lacerations affords good long-term cosmesis and no increase in complications (infection, dehiscence rates, and need for surgical scar revision) when compared with wounds sutured with nonabsorbable sutures. METHODS: This was a randomized clinical trial conducted in a pediatric emergency department. Patients 1-18 years of age who presented to the emergency department with lacerations < 12 hours old were recruited between January 1999 and December 2001. Exclusion criteria were the following: wounds that could be approx

Non-myeloablative hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (NST) in the treatment of human malignancies: from animal models to clinical practice.

NST is becoming a widely accepted method for allogeneic HSCT. Much experience has been gained, and the biology, indications and limitations are becoming clearer. Nonmyeloablative conditioning allows consistent engraftment of allografts from matched related, unrelated, and even partially matched donors. NST has been able to reduce the toxicity of allogeneic HSCT. The better immediate outcome produces better overall DFS. NST was feasible in elderly patients with almost no upper age limit, and in patients with organ dysfunction or other comorbidities precluding standard ablative conditioning. NST

Severe nutritional deficiencies in toddlers resulting from health food milk alternatives.

It is widely appreciated that health food beverages are not appropriate for infants. Because of continued growth, children beyond infancy remain susceptible to nutritional disorders. We report on 2 cases of severe nutritional deficiency caused by consumption of health food beverages. In both cases, the parents were well-educated, appeared conscientious, and their children received regular medical care. Diagnoses were delayed by a low index of suspicion. In addition, nutritional deficiencies are uncommon in the United States and as a result, US physicians may be unfamiliar with their clinical f

Maternal circadian rhythm writes immune fate in offspring.

An organism's environment is rarely constant. Light, temperature, humidity, food availability, and microbial exposure often fluctuate rhythmically, creating daily patterns that organisms must anticipate and respond to (Paranjpe and Sharma 2005; van der Linden et al. 2010; Thaiss et al. 2014). The ability of biological systems to align physiology with such environmental cycles has fascinated biologists for decades, and circadian regulation is now known to influence diverse processes, including metabolism, behaviour, development, immunity, and stress responses (Fagiani et al. 2022; Poole and Kit
