Unusual hyperparathyroidism in a cat.

A 5 month-old, male, domestic short hair cat was presented with inappetence and vomiting. it was depressed and reluctant to move. The cat had difficulties in keeping the standing position and grossly deformed thighs. Lytic changes and disruption of normal architecture of the bone were observed, involving mainly the femoral diaphyses. An inverse Ca/P ratio and kidney failure were diagnosed. The possibility of whether the bone changes could have been related to primary or secondary renal hyperparathyroidism is discussed.

A case of mitral regurgitation whose nocturnal periodic breathing was improved after mitral valve replacement.

Nocturnal periodic breathing (PB) is often observed in patients with congestive heart failure (CHF). We investigated the sleep architecture polysomnographically in a 54-year-old man with CHF due to mitral regurgitation before and after surgical treatment. We found that the overnight frequency of central dominant sleep apnea decreased from 154 to 56, and the lowest nocturnal oxygen saturation increased from 66% to 85% postoperatively. These improvements in the manifestations of PB might be attributed to the improved hemodynamics after successful valve replacement.

Polyostotic lesions compatible with osteofibrous dysplasia. A case report.

An 18-month-old girl with lesions in the cortex of the bilateral tibiae and ulnae and right fibula is reported. The lesion in the right tibia disappeared after curettage and xenogeneic bone grafting, and the other lesions disappeared spontaneously by the age of 12 years. All lesions involved the bone cortex. The right tibia lesion exhibited the histopathological features of "zonal architecture" and a osteoblast rim formation around the trabeculae. We consider that osteofibrous dysplasia can involve systemically any long bone.

Reply to: Erosive balanitis caused by Staphylococcus haemolyticus in a healthy, circumcised adult male.

In this short letter of correspondence, we provide our specialist interpretation of what has been described in a previously published case report. We argue that this case describes a patient with chronic, undertreated male genital lichen sclerosus. If left unchecked, as in this case, lichen sclerosus can cause permanent architectural changes and damage to the affected tissues, and can thus predisposes to secondary infections, including bacterial, such as with Staphylococcus haemolyticus.

GCGFormer: Geometry-Compatibility-Guided Attention for Rotated Object Detection.

Rotated object detection in remote sensing imagery requires both semantic understanding and accurate geometric reasoning. Existing geometry-aware detectors commonly introduce geometric information through oriented proposals or decoder queries, making their designs dependent on specific detection architectures, while geometric relationships among feature tokens remain insufficiently explored. To address this limitation, we propose GCGFormer, a geometry-compatibility-guided attention module for rotated object detection. Specifically, GCGFormer constructs a dual-token representation and a geometr…

Design and Structure of Protein Cages Based on Helical Fusion and Machine Learning.

Self-assembling protein cages are versatile nanoscale architectures with broad applications in drug delivery, vaccine development, and structural biology. Historically, two main strategies have been used to construct such cages: genetic fusion of oligomeric domains connected by helical linkers, and computational interface design using either physics-based or machine learning-based methods. Here, we extend the original fusion approach using modern AI algorithms and more sophisticated treatments of helix bending to create protein cages with novel architectures composed exclusively of trimeric bu…

Bio-inspired micro/nano-structured interfaces in functional photoelectric devices.

Interfaces govern how photons enter, propagate within and leave functional photoelectric devices. In solar cells, photodetectors and light-emitting diodes, small optical losses at outer surfaces, buried transport layers or emissive interfaces can determine whether a high-quality semiconductor stack reaches its device-level potential. Natural optical surfaces offer a compact design library: compound eyes collect light over broad angles, butterfly and feather architectures impose anisotropic scattering, moth and cicada wings suppress reflection through subwavelength topography, and lotus-like su…

Macrophages in spatial context: cellular niches in lung disease.

Advances in spatial omics are shifting the study of lung macrophages from the characterization of isolated transcriptional states toward an understanding of their function in the context of cellular origin, anatomical location, neighboring cells, and tissue architecture. Here, we distinguish the macrophage niche in the strict sense-the local microenvironment that sustains tissue-resident macrophage survival and identity-from the broader cellular niche, in which macrophages are spatially organized with multiple interacting cell populations, and integrate recent insights into lung repair and chr…

Engineering metal-organic frameworks as precision nanomedicines for myocardial infarction therapy.

Myocardial infarction (MI) remains a major cause of mortality worldwide. However, current therapeutic paradigms are limited in their ability to modulate the post-infarction pathological microenvironment with spatiotemporal precision. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), an emerging class of crystalline porous coordination polymers, offer exceptional structural programmability through their ultra-high specific surface areas, tunable pore architectures, and customizable surface chemistries. These properties have positioned MOFs as promising platforms for targeted MI therapy. In this review, the mole…

Mechanisms of hamstring strain injuries in sprinting: an integrative scoping review of intrinsic, biomechanical and modifiable risk factors.

UNLABELLED: This scoping review aimed to bring together evidence from muscular architecture, biomechanics, training physiology and injury history-fields that have been examined individually in the past-to clarify how intrinsic and extrinsic factors influence hamstring strain injury development. A systematic literature search of three databases was undertaken in accordance with the PRISMA guidelines for scoping reviews. Peer-reviewed studies covering the mechanisms of hamstring strain injuries were reviewed and 32 articles met the eligibility criteria and methodological quality assessment. Mult…

Effects of High-Moisture Extrusion Conditions on the Functionality and In Vitro Digestibility of Waxy and High-Amylose Barley Flours.

This study assessed how high-moisture extrusion (HME) alters the structural, functional, and in vitro digestibility properties of two barley flours with contrasting starch architectures: waxy barley (Annapurna®) and high-amylose barley (Hilose®). The flours were processed at three moisture contents (50%, 60%, and 70%) and two screw speeds (100 and 150 rpm). Moisture content emerged as the main processing factor influencing the response of both barley matrices, although the magnitude and direction of the changes depended strongly on barley composition. At 50% moisture and 150 rpm, the higher sp…

Tough Glassy Hydrogels of High Water Content via Polymerization-Induced Hydrogen Bonding and Phase Separation of Block Copolymers.

Tough glassy hydrogels that rely on robust noncovalent interactions of copolymers typically suffer from low water content, because random monomer sequences hinder the formation of ordered intermolecular associations and well-organized network architectures. Here, we report tough poly(methacrylic acid)-block-poly(methacrylamide) (PMAAc-b-PMAAm) hydrogels with high water content, fabricated via the reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization that results in hydrogen bonding between repeated units and microphase separation of the system. The block sequence promotes form…

An Ultrarobust Dual-Modal Neural Fiber With In-Sensor Computing.

Touch behavior constitutes the most direct physical manifestation of human intentions, meaning that intention decoding requires human-machine interfaces to simultaneously sense touch position and pressure. Conventional systems, however, rely on physically stacked discrete sensors and von Neumann architectures, causing data redundancy and impaired wearability. Here, we present an in-sensor-computing dual-modal neural fiber (ID neural fiber) that overcomes this fundamental limitation. The ID neural fiber achieves an unprecedented position resolution of < 5 mm and a pressure detection limit of 0.…

Uncertainty quantification for trustworthy deep learning: Methods and measures.

The deployment of deep neural networks in safety-critical domains demands reliable estimates of predictive confidence, yet conventional architectures lack principled uncertainty quantification. This survey provides a structured, critical review of methods for Uncertainty Quantification (UQ) in deep learning, scoped to ensemble-based and approximate Bayesian approaches and the measures used to summarize their outputs. Relative to existing UQ surveys, our contribution is depth on efficient ensemble approximations and single-pass methods, and a unified treatment that separates the method producin…

Fast, flexible gene cluster family delineation with IGUA.

Prokaryotic genomes harbor a variety of functional elements encoded as contiguous multi-gene clusters. To identify homologous gene clusters, computational tools that account for multi-gene architectures are needed to group gene clusters into Gene Cluster Families (GCFs). However, existing GCF delineation methods do not scale well to large datasets and are often limited to certain subclasses of gene clusters. Here, we present IGUA (Iterative Gene clUster Analysis; https://github.com/zellerlab/IGUA), a scalable, flexible GCF delineation method for genomic segments with multi-gene architectures. …
